I will never stop talking about Lupin the 3rd on this website and you cannot stop me. So instead, I think you should enjoy this video where I talk about 1978's The Mystery of Mamo, a sci-fi adventure masterpiece that allows us to examine limited animation, one of Japan's greatest animation techniques and contributions to the medium.

Bit of a write-up on this video, as usual: So I've been planning to discuss this movie for a very long time; I toyed around with doing this instead of talking about Cagliostro late last December. I ended up going with Cagliostro, but with plans to release a similar video about Mamo in March, for alliterative reasons and because it would coincide with the release of Discotek Media's new Blu-Ray of the film. Eventually, though, I rediscovered Every Frame a Painting, who is still, inarguably, the best videoessay channel on here. I realized their focus on techniques of filmmaking as opposed to simple narrative analysis, which it often feels like I do. I missed the initial date I wanted, but I'm glad I was able to make this at all, and I wholeheartedly feel it's among the best videos we've made. I hope you all feel the same.

Visually, this might be my favorite animated movie ever made. I’m so obsessed with the art and animation style and the colorful, rather experimental often trippy scenes and unique feelings I get from it. Thank you for doing that justice! Ive seen a lot of reviews on the characters and plot and it’s ranking in the franchise but no one ever talks about the unparalleled and evocative animation in depth: Which is what this movie is really most offering!!!

I was considering doing a more surface-level and all-encomapssing review, but I realized that there was so, so much to pull out of the animation that I could do a whole video about it. I'm glad people seem to be enjoying that aspect of the discussion!

This is a great analysis of this film's animation. You know, even among Lupin fans, The Mystery of Mamo is often underrated. This wasn't just wacky science fiction romp, this film about the strength of love and how it never can be dominated by the forces of tyrannical governments.

Taking what would be a limitation and creating a beautiful style out of it is true genius. It blows my mind that a movie this well designed came out in 1978, when anime was arguably still in its infancy and very early stages.

I love this fucking movie. At least almost 2 times a year I see it again, even by current Lupin standards, this movie is rare and unique. I especially love how many seconds are just paintings and the only thing that moves is the camera. The backgrounds here I would say are even better than in Cagliostro, the comparisons are innevitable, and meanwhile in that movie all the characters try to have "realistic" movements, here everything feels more cartoonish. Lupin looks like an scarecrow haha.

Agreed! I adore Cagliostro, and Miyazaki's fluid direction is certainly fun to see, especially in its earlier stages. But Mamo is such an oddity and unique visual experience in everything it does, I often find it sticks in my head longer when I watch it and wanting to rewatch it more often.

Cagliostro is a good film but tries too hard to ape Disney and be 'wholesome' while Mamo is full on unbridled superfly Cinemascope madness. Also the most 70s film to have ever been made.

As a Lupin III fan myself, I loved this review. Lupin III has to be in my top 3 favorite anime franchises. I like a lot of the various animated media that has come out of it. The theatrical movies are some of my favorites of the franchise for me. Each of the four that I've seen (Mamo, Cagliostro, Babylon, and The First) are so uniquely different from one another, but are still quintessentially Lupin III. I'd love to see you do more videos on the franchise.

Nice vid! Love to see some love for Mystery of Mamoo and its animation. Just one small correction: Otsuka isn't the animation director of the movie, Yuzo Aoki and Yoshio Kabashima are. Otsuka at the time was working on Future Boy Conan with Miyazaki, he didn't have the time to really work on Mamoo and found the time to partecipate as a supervisor only when the production was almost wrapped up. Yuzo Aoki was also the character designer and his style can be seen all over the movie. He is, in my opinion, one of the best animator of the franchise, and Otsuka thought he was a genius. He is behind many Part 1 famous scenes, the best Part 2 OP in my opinion (the fourth one) and the direction (while not acting as a real director) of Part 3.

I'm sorry for the mistake! I've done some reasearch into Aoki's contributions to the series before but missed his work on this film, which is unfortunate because I agree with everything you've said about his skill. Especially here, where he leans into the heavy manga style and creates really unique looks for the characters that really haven't been seen since. Thank you for teaching me!

Mamo will forever be my favorite Lupin film. The animation is gorgeous and although it has aged (obviously) it's still very appealing to this day. The character design is cartoony with the characters having weird faces and very slim arms/legs which makes it feel like you're watching a chapter of the manga animated, plus I love that the gang are morally ambiguous assholes here, I never liked good guy hero Lupin. The plot is extremely bizzare but at the same time it stands out so much and it never drops pace. And, being that this is the only movie that came before Cagliostro, it's not limited by the standard Lupin formula and instead of wasting time on a random female character that will never appear again, it emphasizes on the relationships within the gang and the conflict within it. As much as I like Miyazakis work with Lupin, I REALLY wish furure directors would stop trying to replicate his work and do their own thing like Mamo. Makes me wonder if Cagliostro did more bad than good to the franchise as a whole.
@TRRYT
@TRRYT Жыл бұрын
I adore Cagliostro but it has had pretty harsh impacts long-term for the series, which I really don't like. I think that's probably part of why I like Koike's work so much; it's very stripped down and simplistic, but more importantly, it's genuinely original stuff that's vey fun to watch.
@jc_ride

@TRRYT
@TRRYT Жыл бұрын
@@jc_ride I liked Part 4's episodic nature, the slick production quality and tone felt to me a lot like Cowboy Bebop but lighter, which I liked. The stuff towards the end was weird but it was fine. Part 5 I absolutely love, the way the arcs feel like little movies/OVAs on their own is awesome, and I think it's really smart and successful in reorienting Lupin into modern day technological surroundings without losing the charm. Great stuff. Part 6...I didn't finish. Between the low production values and the weak episodes, I just couldn't even make it halfway because the show really bummed me out in how it was made. I also think the structure was weak because the guest-written episodes felt randomly thrown in, unlike Part 5, where the non-major episodes functioned as brief breaks in between arcs. I did really like Episode 0, though; it's a terrific sendoff that I'm glad was made and hits even harder now after Kiyoshi Kobayashi's passing.
@jc_ride
@jc_ride Жыл бұрын
@@TRRYT I do suggest that you give Season 2 of Part 6 a try, plus the dub will be fully released a month from now. The season 2 story actually requires that you also view the season 2 one off episodes and although I think the writers got cold feet and could have done more with the concept, I think it's preety interesting. The season 1 Holmes story you're better off just skipping entirely it's an absolute borefest with nothing even remotely notable about it.

I really think you should make the switch to subs. I know Lupin has a fairly liked sub but when it comes to films like Cagliostro and alot of stuff from the time dubs usually mess with the score and also just don't pack as savory of a punch as the subs (plus, cmon. don't you want to hear the voice direction the original team produced the film around?). Obviously, do it if you want to. Just mentioning it because you seem to have good taste and seem media analysis savvy. Also, I agree on critisizing some aspects of 79 gundam, but the show itself is actually sort of a masterclass in limited animation itself. It's a little harder to appreciate than a miyazaki or even some of the older Toei guys like Otsuka and takahata but the director of gundam is in about the same skill range as those guys in my opinion. Takes a little more to appreciate him, is all. ALSO, ALSO, i understand you're making your videos with a sort of wider educational appeal to film nerds in general but i'm just gonna say most of your audience right now are probably fairly anime savvy. While i appreciate your points i think you'd find yourself finding more interesting ideas to explore if you assumed most people watching are at least a bit more familiar with anime culture (you do this in general but this is mostly a comment refering to the Visions video and how you could only name like 4 of the most talked about directors and animators in the western side of anime culture. i doubt anyone who saw that video wasn't familiar with them.) Anyways, sorry if i come off as a nitpicky nerd but i think you're p cool. keep making fun stuff and maybe track down what some of the people like Takahata, Miya, Otsuka and others have done before Mamo. alot of good stuff to watch. keep having fun.
@TRRYT

You don’t come off as nitpicky at all! I actually do watch most of my anime in sub, but I find that using dub footage for the videos works better, so the audience isn’t split between my narration, the actual video, and the subs. It gets really bad if I have to add extra text too, because then the frame gets really cluttered. I also do love Tomino and his work on Gundam. I think it’s stunning the sheer mecha action they managed to achieve all the way back in ‘79. While there is often really cool stylization in the series that I appreciate, I just thought this one shot did the job of what I needed to say, so I used it. As for discussing other directors, I’ll consider it! I’ve gotta finish up at least two more videos on Evangelion, so we’ll have to see, but I’d love to tackle slightly less well known stuff (Wings of Honneamise, maybe even Patlabor, who knows)! Thanks for watching the video and commenting, I really appreciate your support and when people make the effort to interact with our videos this way.

I was saying it “racks focus.” This is when the camera shifts from focusing on one part of the frame to another (in this case, the background to the foreground). It’s something that happens a lot in live action movies where you have a real camera, but not as much in animation, where the camera doesn’t quite exist in the same way. Hope this cleared it up!

It’s certainly a very hit-or-miss film. As someone that’s found more recent entries in the franchise strong but at times held back by low production quality (Part 6) or formulaic storytelling (many of the TV Specials), Mamo is something that hits a really nice sweet spot for me as a really zany adventure never really seen again in the series and with animation that is top class, even today. But at the same time, I do realize that the lengthy, odd plot and sometimes overly sexual nature of the movie can be too much and just plain not work for many people.
@ricardocantoral7672

The film is quite straightforward and it has less to do with the superficial, the science fiction, and more to do with the character drama and a satirical view of the cold war. There is also some very clever suggestions that Lupin is possibly the son of God. For me, this is way better than Cagliostro which is good but it's essentially a Disneyfied, sanitized Lupin. The character is far more interesting when he's a flawed anti-hero instead of the noble gentleman.
