I built my own kitchen recently - a shaker style - simply by adding face-frames to the existing quality carcasses and making new doors, plus a bit of re-arranging of units and a new quartz top. Not quite to the standard of the chap here, but I recognised many of his tools and techniques (pocket hole drill etc :)). Lovely to watch a real pro though - absolutely beautiful craftsmanship. Makes me want to do it all again and see if I can my tolerances even closer than last time! Great video - enjoyed it immensely.

Tbh, unless you're paying absolute megabucks, the utilisation of standard quality, big box cabinetry is perfectly good. I've seen 40 year old carcasses that are still as good as the day they were manufactured. As you say, it's the visible bits, doors, drawer fronts that make the look. These can be replaced ,reworked, repainted or whatever in minutes.

I like using Ronseal multipurpose wood filler, you can sometimes avoid sanding by wiping away the excess with a damp cloth. If it looks like it's starting to dry up, just add a little bit of water, mix it really well and it's good again. I also use my finger as a more flexible filling tool, especially in corners.

@strummer6642 what cheaper alternatives are there too the domino? The maffell dowler is more as well as the lamello. Personally I do think some of the festool stuff is ridiculous compared to others. However, what's cool is they do invent new tools such as the domino and tracksaw where everyone benefits after the patients run out? Personally I think certain bits such as the domino, sanders and dust extractors seem worth it while the drills and multi tools seems to have limited benefits compared too the dewalt or makita

Stunning! Interesting how the solid wood worktop was joined - normally it is just a butt joint for real wood isn't it?
@Mr.Grimsdale
@Mr.Grimsdale 15 күн бұрын
There were two different types of worktop, one was real wood but there was no joint needed because of where it was placed, the other type of worktop looked to be a granite, the joints on that looked to have had a filler of some description, possibly an epoxy resin but its hard to tell as we didn't get a close-up shot.

I have experienced the stark differences between Dulux retail and Dulux trade paint. The coverage and quality of finish are worlds apart. In my particular case the DIY shop has run out of stock (as had the paint after one patchy coat). The trade centre was only £4:00 dearer, but coverage, ease of use would make it far the cheaper product in a side by side job comparison.

Beautiful work! Why could i not find trades to take such care. Ive just finished an accessible renovation, first contractor took ,£25,000 & ran - more if i include the work that had to be redone... The last job was supposed to be finished March 2023, still waiting i have a half finished, media wall, what was suppsed to be bespoke & i thought wood -its pratically an ikea unit, no real wood in sight. & apparently bifold doors on a computer area thats part of the media unit, is just to difficult too!

What plywood was used for the carcasses
@MarkNixon-lv7df
@MarkNixon-lv7df Күн бұрын
It was 18mm rotary cut, birch veneered, poplar plywood. Unfortunately no longer available, due to the war in Ukraine. You can still get birch ply, though it tends to be inferior quality, with some pugs/patches. Maple veneered, poplar ply is a good alternative, but comes at a cost.
