Drains are the worst source for having toxic gas fumes within. Never put your head into a manhole without proper equipment. Too many people have died due to entering manholes without protective precautions.

I suppose that skirting is never coming off. But for some reason the former skirting had been removed. Maybe because of a new floor. Has the owner decided that this home will never get anotner floor?

~ Hi. I did up a historic timber frame building with a small team for a year and a half. The nature of the house " breathing " relates to the way it sat on the ground. The cellar was always very damp and the whole base of the house needed to absorb and release efficiently. All traditional materials were used and an acceptance of good venting and a dehumidifier in the cellar was passed on to the owner. French drains were also recommended. We even got an article in a classic homes magazine with the comment "Restoration done properly ". Plus an awkward photo of me disregarding health and safety with my inventive use of a ladder ( terrible angle etc ).

A dustbin full of water gets most things moving again, but probably not wedged masonry or cast iron soil pipe shrapnel... Bailey locking rods are the biz if you need a bit more flexibility.

Interesting that Roger spends the start of the video extolling the virtues of locking rods and then gives an affilliate link to rods which are the old screw together non-locking version!

You aren't clear what grade NHL you are using versus aggregate to binder ratio . You start saying NHL grade 3.5 then say 5.1 which sounds more like a mix ratio than NHL 5 binder grade as this would be way OTT for the vast majority of uses in England. Later you say 3.1 and 5.1 which follows the format you are using for binder ratio in the other materials. The sand to binder ratio in lime doesn't work like OPC. The normal aim is to only just fill the voids with binder irespective of the strength required, varying the hydraulicity varies strength at the cost of permeability. Most of the sharp sand I get locally needs about a 5:2 mix and this is calculated using a kiln dried sample and measuring how much water will saturate it. A 6.1.1 mix actually comes into this ball park and isn't a million miles away from NHL 3.5 3:1 in chemical terms although the Calcium Silicate and Calcium Hydroxide in OPC/Hydrated Lime are in different forms from those in NHL so they aren't interchangeable in use.

I'd say this is more important when being used as an external render or internal wall covering. Once on, you treat them very differently. Cement based renders or plasters you would paint with a paint that is mostly plastic nowadays which is not particularly water permeable. Where as with a lime finished wall you wouldn't go near it with a modern paint.

That's an amazing job the only thing picked up on is I recently learned why framers use nails not screws in terms of floor boards. When the structure moves screws sheer under the stress nails bend but still stay in tact, I'd also assume the screw heads will be too rusty to take out properly anyway after a few years. Not craping on him though I only learned that last year. And that's a hell of a good job fair play just wanted to share knowledge as the channel taught me so much

A bit late to the party on this one but did you fix it Roger? I had similar recent problem but as for fluid loss, the reservoir serves the brakes also so some loss is normal as the brakes wear however, on the clutch issue I replaced the master cylinder then back bled using a syringe feeding brake fluid into the clutch bleed nipple in the line down the front of engine and the pedal returned to normal

This experiment has already been done for years, with results verified time and again and put into practice by English Heritage, National Trust, SPAB and conservators working on Cathedrals. The result is cement is very bad for old solid walls. It makes them damp and causes frassing and degredation of the bricks or stone, and also rots timber frames by retaining moisture. Look it up, there are many studies showing this, and you can see it jusy walking about, look for old buildings pointed with cement, you can see the massive damage to the old bricks or stones.

I was in London this week and looked at hundreds of old sand and lime buildings pointed with cement and I didn;t see one of them that showed what you describe. The fact is that some bricks such as red rubbers will spall and so will Flettons but the 150 year old yellow London stocks let go of moisture very well. The moisture leaves the same way it gets in.
@user-iw7gb6hx2j
@user-iw7gb6hx2j Күн бұрын
@SkillBuilder it happens less in London, as it is the driest part of the country. But I have seen it happen in London, and if you have a good look you will see a fair bit of spalling. Those Victorian brick buildings do handle it a bit better, but outside of London you see a lot of problems from cement pointing, especially on Georgian houses, and stone houses. Though I was looking at a Victorian brick house suffering from it earlier today on the South Coast. I have myself several times changed a wall from being damp and decaying, to dry with no more frassing, by taking off the cement and replacing it with lime. Very wet cold walls can be transformed. But NHL should generally not be used for this. Instead non hydraulic putty or hot lime. Historic England, SPAB, and the various other bodies havn't turned against cement for no reason. After the post war years saw cement liberally slapped on on old buildings, it was discovered that it widely causes these problems.
