The father of gospel music, Thomas A. Dorsey, wrote the classic hymn 'Take My Hand Precious Lord' while dealing with a great personal tragedy.

LYRICS:
Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When the darkness appears and the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand, guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

Spent many decades as a snarky agnostic. Also have battled depression, anxiety, mild spectrum disorder and complex childhood PTSD. Lost my husband in 2017 and have been learning how to live by myself and "stand on my own two feet". As I get older and study the scriptures, the presence of God has become more and more a reality for me. I'm grateful for all the blessings God has showered me with, my continuing healing and a developing relationship with Jesus. This is a hymn that's comforting. Thank you, Rev. Powell, for your KZfaq channel!

I want to thank you Luke for your wonderful Ministry. it is such a comfort to hear these songs of my youth . I did grow up out side of a small town in Minnesota and went to a Christian Reformed Church there. . And now I support my husband in a small ministry in Nashville Tennessee .We both work other jobs as well. As I was born in the 1950s it did take some time for me to relinquish my desire to only hear the older hymns although I do continue to love them, I also now appreciate the wonderfulness of the newer Christian songs as well. Your excellent videos and obvious diligent work are a joy to watch. I have always enjoyed hearing the background of the writers but until recent years did not have much time to research it. We have weekly Bible studies at our home and I am grateful to share your knowledge( and mention you as source) in the introduction before we sing and play songs for worship. Thank you again Luke we all really appreciate you and your ministry. May God richly bless you and your family✝️✨️🕊

I remember this song from Methodist Church in 🇯🇲, Sunday Gospel radio in Jamaica and black funerals in England. There are some problems that seems as if they don’t want to leave and your battling, battling and I’m about to give up. This one of the songs I sing. Then I will sing “Hold to HIS Hand, GOD’s unchanging Hand/Love”

My mother was a Godly woman. Helping others was her life. She lived to be 99 and her mind was still sharp. She wrote a letter to my brother in which she spelled out some details she'd like considered for her funeral, things she hoped would be part of the memorial service. She included several hymns 'to chose from.' One of the hymns she mentions reminded me of your meditation on "Precious Lord Take My Hand." It was the following hymn which also uses the Jordon River as the border between this life and the next. Here are the lyrics: When I come to the river at the ending of day When the last winds of sorrow have blown There'll be somebody waiting to show me the way I won't have to cross Jordan alone Refrain: I won't have to cross Jordan alone Jesus died all my sins to atone In the darkness I see He'll be waiting for me I won't have to cross Jordan alone Often times I'm weary and troubled and sad When it seems that my friends have all flown (when you live to be 99 ALL your friends and family are gone!) There is one thought that cheers me and makes my heart glad I won't have to cross Jordan alone Though the billows of trouble and sorrow may sweep Christ the Savior will care for his own Till the end of my journey my soul he will keep And I won't have to cross Jordan alone Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Thomas Ramsey

It was some years ago when the storms of life seemed to overtake my little boat and I really didn't understand what our Lord's plan was through the circumstances which I was in, I would wake up at night from a deep sleep, being quite perplexed. But when I would lift my rhoughts up to our Lord, I would tangibly experience His outstretched Hand close enough for me to grab hold of. And every time I do that by faith since that first time, I experience His tangible presence and peace in my heart. He is truly precious to me! Psalm 63:8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

I, personally, have just grown-up with this song. I grew up in a church where we sang so much that we didn't need the hymnals. The congregation just knew the words. Even to this day - at least 55 years later - I can still sing most of these songs from my aged memory. Thank you for bring this song to mind and giving me a greater understanding of its origin!! I am richer for today's presentation! Thank-you, brother!!!!

My mother would sing this song as she did her housework. Whenever she sang this song we knew she had a heavy heart🎵 this was in the ‘50s’. Later I started hearing this at our Baptist church during prayer meetings. Today the words of this song pops up in my head whenever I have a heavy heart. 🎵

Thank you for highlighting this great song; my aunt worked as a nurse's aide in a small-town hospital in Galesburg, IL. She also sang in the First Lutheran Church choir and with a trio of her sisters. My mom played the cello, and the youngest sister played the piano, and they performed at church services and weddings all around the area; at the hospital, when someone was dying and troubled or agitated or afraid, my aunt would go to the person's room and sing this hymn. She had a beautiful singing voice, and her performance always calmed the dying. I was told the entire hospital floor would go quiet to listen to her sing.

I really had to think hard where I encountered this song for the first time and then I remembered. I read a book as a 12, 13 year old and it was printed in this book and it impressed me no end. I grew up in an Afrikaans church and after I got my degree I went over to the Methodist church and we sang it a lot there under the stewardship of Tony Bethke in the 70ties. Thanx for reminding me again of this wonderful and uplifting song. I loved hearing the history about this song. ❤
