A Polish biologist said the wolf exhibited behavioral patterns that indicated he wanted to play with the lynx and her kittens, instead of hunt and eat them. The Worldwide Wildlife Foundation has heralded this encounter as an indisputable sign that conservation efforts are succeeding as the two endangered populations are rebounding.

Late but I don't think they are playing. That wolf has their tail tucked and is keeping a distance from the lynx. The lynx seems like they are unsure of what to do, looking away and suddenly running at the wolf. It seems like the two are a bit confused. Both of them being almost the same size and healthy, which leads to confusion about hunting eachother.

So exciting, the little yawn of the wolf, letting go of tension and then a playful bounce like he does with his siblings. Too cute. I wonder if these interspecies playfulness happened before we started noticing and we're just really obsessed with documenting and sharing this sort of thing now. For this case, it's a chance to see them not fighting for survival anymore and have room to see each other as friends not just competition and enemies.

I'm sorry to disturb the idyll, but what you see is not a game, at least not for the lynx. On the left of the video where the forest begins, the presence of a lynx cub can be seen in a not very distinct but identifiable way. More likely, the mother lynx tried to drive away the wolf, rightly considering it a threat to her baby. It is an almost unique video of a rather rare interaction.

@@ClaudiaDCD However they have existed and there are strange, very strange interactions, these have also been documented. Particular wild cohabitations such as: female wolf with bear in Finland and even (maybe ... but I think so) wolf that accompanies peacefully together with a pair of wolverines. Living things can surprise.

Wolves are smart, they lure away dogs and sometimes cats then kill them, the reason might be the kittens? Maybe there was another wolf ready to snatch them once the wolf got the lynx's attention. I find that more likely than a wolf wanting to play with a lynx. A wolf is waaaay smarter than a dog.

This is a rare sight of two forest predators playing together in the winter ❄️ I would think that both cats 🐈 and dogs 🐕 should get along with each other even in the wild

They are by no means playing together. The wolf seeks out the lynx as possible prey. And this forces the lynx into an aggressive posture and attacks.

I'm not an animal expert, but I don't agree with that claim: The wolf wanting to play with the lynx. You can see the wolf's tail between it's legs. Canines do that when they're scared.

it doesn't mean scared actually, it means submission, as in "I don't wanna harm you, and I want you to know I mean no harm" The claim that it wanted to play is not false u see this exact behavior a lot between cats and dogs, the dog is not afraid, but it's not aggressive either, it wants to meet and possibly play

@xismxist No. Actually it does stand a huge chance 1 on 1. This is a female lynx. It's the males that kill wolves, and even then it's usually only female wolves or pups, never an alpha male...
