Thank you for your advice, I do agree with your comments. I think my biggest problem is that I get very inspired by watching your tutorials, if I am honest I think it is finding the time. I am working on changing a few things in my life and hopefully next year I will have more time.

Hi Kerry, thank you so much for your help and guidance at yesterday's workshop, I enjoyed every minute of it. I do have a question from a beginner, it's a hard question to put together so apologies if doesn't make sense. I see you used a grey colour paper, what goes through your mind when choosing a paper colour as i have only off white? I'll definitely be putting clarefontaine paper on my Xmas list as this ingress paper I have is awful compared to the clarefontaine. I look forward to seeing you again next year at another workshop ❤

Hi there Emma, thank you once. The choice of paper colour - I tend to find that any neutral colour works fine with pastel paintings (with the styles and techniques that I work with). So it really does come down to personal preference. I have worked with white pastel mat paper in the past but it isn’t my favourite as the glare from it can be problematic sometimes. I tend to enjoy working with a mid range neutral tone the best. A neutral tone doesn’t interfere too much with the colours I apply, and the mid range paper enables ease when going either lighter or darker with subsequent pastel layers, whereas if using white paper then white pastel wont show up on it, and the same goes for when using a black pastel with black paper etc. So my advice would be to stick with a mid range neutral tone such as light grey or light beige (I believe the latter colour is known as ‘sand’). I hope this helps, and yes I hope to see you again next year xXx

Thank you very much for your detailed response Kerry, that is really helpful and something that I will bear in mind, I seen all sorts of colours online, thought I would ask before I look at purchasing. Even my hubby sat and watched your video in awe, you're so wonderful to watch and learn from, take care and speak soon xxx

Kerry I have a question. When applying pan pastels, do you apply the color straight from the pan pastel pan directly to the Clairfontaine paper OR do you first apply the color to a palette/piece of paper, mix it there and then from there, apply it to the Clairfontaine paper? I ask because other artists have suggested mixing the pan pastel color on a palette/piece of paper first, but when I try that method, it is always applied too thinly. Also, I believe that is what causes my Sofft Tool sponges to wear out so quickly. I always have bits of sponges all over my artwork.

Hi there Derek, thank you for your question. I actually use both of the methods you have mentioned. For example, say I have a medium blue pan and a white pan but I need light blue for my painting - I first load my sofft tool with white then pick up a little blue and then apply that mixture, that is now on my sofft tool, straight onto my pastel mat paper. Hence mixing the two colours together on my project paper. If I want to make a dark blue but only have medium blue and black, I pick up a little black first, then load up with medium blue, then again straight to the pastel mat paper. (The reason for putting the black on first and then picking up the blue is to stop the black from ‘staining’ the paper). Now I can mix most colours this way, using two, three or four colours at a time. However if I’m looking to mix a more precise colour, hue or shade, one that needs to be repeatedly matched, then I’ll mix on a piece of copier paper. Yes you’re right in saying that when colours are mixed this way the pastel goes on in small amounts and can be quite laborious, but obviously what you can do if mixing this way is use a spare piece of pastel mat paper to mix colours on - this works well too. Derek my Sofft Tool sponges wear out quite quickly too, that’s why you’ll see me sometimes using make up sponges instead - they’re much cheaper and I haven’t had one begin to fray yet. I hope this helps you xXx

Would you please give me some advice, would you master 1 medium until you feel comfortable with it or try more than 1 and just take it 1 picture at a time. Really would like your advice please Kerry.

Hi there, thank you for your question. I believe that we learn more quickly when we’re doing something that we enjoy, so I can’t see any problem switching between mediums. There’s a saying ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’ but that doesn’t apply when it comes to art. Learning about contrast and tonal values, with charcoal for instance, can be applied to all other mediums, as can colour theory etc. Also learning colour mixing in watercolour is no different to mixing colours in acrylics. Therefore I suggest that you do what makes you happy. Art is a journey and not a destination. We’re always learning no matter how long we’ve been using a particular medium. Maybe choice a reference image and create a painting or drawing from it in each medium you want to try, you’ll be surprised at the amount of techniques that are transferable. I hope this helps you xXx
