Hi there, I haven’t placed a ‘thick board’ on this easel, if you know the weight of the board you’d be wanting to use you could contact Meeden (their customer service is very good). If I were going to use a heavyweight board I would attach it directly to the easel on a camera pivot mount. I hope this is helpful xXx

Brilliant work! Thank you for sharing! I learned about Liquitex soft body paints for the first time, I will definitely try some of those. In hopes that my paintings will look less cartoonish. You mention you use glazes, can you steer me towards any in particular? I am overwhelmed with the options of thick, gel, satin, gloss, slow drying, etc etc. 💕
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartistАй бұрын
Hi there Julie, thank you for your encouraging comment - truly appreciated. A glaze is simply applying a transparent colour, or a mix of transparent colours, over an existing colour. For this I prefer to use Liquitex basics just with water to thin them down. I don’t use glazing mediums as it alters the paint texture and drying time. xXx

Kerry - your work jumps off the page. Just lovely. Technical question - I wondered if the little dishes of color you create from the intense blocks can be reactivated with water the next day, like traditional watercolor or gouache.
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartistАй бұрын
Awe thank you, truly appreciated. As for your question - yes they can be, but they can be a little granular to begin with, as though the pigment particles like to stick together. However if you swirl them around enough with your brush they will separate and can be used as though they were fresh again. xXx

I bought one of these easels and returned it after 15 minutes of giving it a full examination. I don’t recommend this easel at all. The ledge on the painting board is too shallow to hold a thicker canvas, board or thicker paper pad. You can only really use it landscape, not portrait. I tried using it portrait by sitting another drawing board on the ledge of the painting board, but that caused the painting board to tilt backwards because I couldn’t tighten the screws enough. It’s quite flimsy and not as versatile as it first appears to be. It’s awful. Don’t waste your money.
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartistАй бұрын
Awe sorry to hear that this easel wasn’t a fit for you and the way you like to work. I’m using it only as a field easel and haven’t experienced any problems with it. I use bulldog clips to clamp my sketch pads or paper to the board so having a smaller ledge is okay for me. I hope you find something to suit your needs xXx

As for my comment at 45:15 - it all depends on whether or not all of the pigment has been dissolved. If all of the pencil pigment has been activated with water and allowed to dry thoroughly (I use a hairdryer or heat tool) in my paintings this pigment is now permanent. However, if some of the pigment is left 'inactivated' then yes, that will react with additional water if layered on top. xXx

Are you worried about colorfastness

Hi there, when working with materials and pigments that have questionable lightfast ratings I tend to just make prints. If however someone does want to purchase a painting like this I make sure to explain the possibilities of potential pigment fading over time.

As soon as I went on Mewe to post my playful oil pastel pieces, I came across this video. Perfect timing. Recently, I did some livestreams and played with my Pentel oil pastels by painting some cardinals (streams ended due to PC knocking out the wi-fi, so they aren't finished yet). They're far from perfect. Pentel OPs are student grades that are not something to use for sellable art due to poor lightfastness nor are they anywhere creamy and easy to work with compared to the likes of Neopastels, Holbein, or Sennelier, but sometimes I just wanna play with my materials darnit lol.

Agreed, Kerry animals do appear as all one unified color. As artist's we know they are not. How will I know when to make my glaze lighter? Does this depend on where the light source is coming from?
@kerrynewell-wildlifeartist2 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes vary your glazes depending on where the light source is coming from and the hues you want to achieve. So it isn’t just a case of ‘one colour glaze fits all’, play with different colours of glazes - you can put them side by side or one over the top of another, just remember not to use white in any of your glaze mixes as this will make your glaze opaque. To lighten a glaze add more water, to darken a glaze you can play with adding blues, violets, browns etc and a touch of black if you wish xXx
