October 19, 1977 they played their last concert in Greenville SC, I'm lucky to have been there for that show, their plane crashed the next evening on the way to Baton Rouge La. The lead singer & one of the lead guitar players and his sister, who was one of the back up singer, and their road manager were killed in the crash, and both pilots also died, all total 6 people died. 20 lived.

My favorite version, this is. It was 'At the Green', One of a series of outdoor concerts held in Oakland back in '77. It had Santana and Peter Frampton as well I think, maybe the Outlaws? Frampton was huge back then and most the girls were probably there to see him. Billy Powell on the piano. He was a roadie for the band that wrote an intro to Free Bird in his spare time, played it for the band and was invited to join the group! Love that! Cheers.

@spells1389 Collins wrote the guitar solo in high school. He brought it to Ronnie and told him the story of his girlfriend and him getting into an argument and she said to him the first verse,, "if I left you tomorrow, would you still remember mw?". Ronnie wrote the other verses in like 20 minutes. Gary came up with the slide to go with the verses. It was a band effort to make it the complete masterpiece it is!

I was at this concert, 4th of July weekend 1977, Day on the Green at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. I was 20 years old. Day on the Green was a recurring concert series in Oakland in the summer, presented by Bill Graham, the premiere rock promoter of his day. This is the only Day on the Green I went to. I lived in South Lake Tahoe at the time, a cook at Harvey's hotel/casino. I drove down with a couple of friends in my buddy's yellow VW Beetle. We went because we wanted to see Peter Frampton, who was also playing at this Day on the Green. Frampton was really hot then, but this performance by Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best. The energy of the massive crowd energized the musicians on the stage. I remember it well. I remember the huge Confederate flat at the back of the stage. That wouldn't be allowed today. I also remember wishing I had a girl to hoist on my shoulders.

This was before the singers had the ear pieces so they could hear themself sing. Notice towards the end when he was singing. It was so loud that he had to look over at the guitar player next to him to stay in tune. The solo has four guitars, one piano and a drummer. The drummer and the piano were both banging it out as loud as they could. It is also neat that the piano was not in the band. He was a "roadie". He would travel with the band and put up all the equpment. They found out he was a classical paino player and dicided to put him in the band.
