I've always considered this version to be a FOUR guitar attack; very often, through no fault of his own, Leon Wilkeson, the bassist, is not considered a guitarist! He definitely contributes some strong phrases, plucking those bass cables (they're so much more than regular guitar strings) cleanly, loudly, and without distortion; when Leon steps in from the right to join Allen Collins (the fellow in white) near the end, he's hitting those rapid notes staccato-like, up-n-down that long bass neck; seems Leon was going to break his fingers working so hard and fast on those thick strings.

The plane crash that was 2-3 months after this performance killed Ronnie Van Zant ( lead singer 29 yrs old), Steve Gaines (red pants was 28), Steve's sister Cassie Gaines (backup singer was 29), road manager and 2 pilots. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. Ten years after the crash the band regrouped with Johnny Van Zant as the lead singer. They are still touring today. Saw them last summer and will see them again this summer. Steve had a beautiful voice, check out Ain’t No Good. THE GIRLS WERE there to see the headliner Peter Frampton.

They had so many hits and they were one of those bands for me like Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Beatles where I literally liked every song off of every album. Such diversity and variety, but yet they always had their own sound. Simple Man and The Ballad Of Curtis Loew are easy entry points and reacted to a lot, and were hits and are fan favorites, but they really do have a ton of stuff before the plane crash.

Absolutely fantastic. Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium I will never forget that concert. One of our friends was kicked out just before they came on because he had worked the night shift and hadn't slept. We were sitting on the 2nd deck and as I was passing a joint a hand with a black sleeve took it. All that officer did was kick out our friend. Lots more from Lynyrd Skynyrd. RIP., I had the original Street Survivors album cover. It had just come out and they changed the cover because of the crash and the flames on the cover. I do not know how many of the originals were sold.

Sad to know just 3 months later, some of them would be gone, in the plane crash. Allen, the one in white, survived, but his life did not go smoothly. He died in his 30's, so just a lot of tragedy. But this is an awesome song, and video of the performance.

I love your description of it as lots of plot twists. For me it's always been a journey and once it shifts from the nostalgic ballad part into the main jam, it always gives me the feeling of an airplane taking off. Which is so poignant because not long after this was their airplane crash that killed certain members and crew members and severely injured others and essentially abruptly ended this stratospheric career climb of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. I was in 9th grade and just devastated.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was America's best band ever and one of the best bands ever in the recording studio, but you have to see them live to fully appreciate how great they really were (as you now know). Here are three Southern boogie bangers that are live and have good sound recording as well: 1)"T for Texas" Live at the Asbury Park, NJ Convention Hall 2) "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller" Live at Knebworth 3) "Call Me the Breeze" Live at Knebworth

Ronnie Van Zant - vocals and leader of the band; Allen Collins - guitar; Gary Rossington - guitar; Steve Gaines - guitar; Artimus Pyle - drums; Leon Wilkeson - bass; Billy Powell - piano; Thier last performance was South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 19 1977 Free Bird lasted for 20 mins The next day boarded their plane that was unsafe the Fuel gauge was broke. The only way to check the fuel was with a stick. The plane ran out of fuel the engines were burning too rich and wasting precious fuel. One engine shut down then the other did. The plane went down over pine trees killing the members of the band, Ronnie Van Zant lead singer, guitarist Steve Gaines, and vocalist Cassie Gaines, that day was the saddest in Southern Rock. I was 20 when I heard about it on the radio. I cried like a baby.

Hi Ola, excellent choice. It's always enjoyable to watch first time reactions to this classic song, especially the change in tempo. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a Southern rock band. They named themselves after their gym tracher, Leonard Skinner. Sadly, about 3 months after this performance, they were involved in a plane crash that took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie Gaines (back up singer),Dean Kilpatrick (asst road manager) and the pilot and co-pilot. They have so many great songs. The other one that most people know is "Sweet Home Alabama"

This was one of the last live performances taped for them (not included the later reincarnations, which were good, kept the songs alive and let us see the remaining band members at least until Gary Rossington died, but wasn't Skynyrd to me). There was a later show about a month later in New Jersey that was probably the last filmed. Lots of You-Tube videos for that, it's in Black and White but the recorded sound quality is a little better.

T for Texas and Call me the breeze, both live at knebworth are great songs. At this concert in England, the rolling stones were the headliners, but ALL music critics said, Lynyrd Skynyrd blew the stones off the stage!!! The stones were not happy having to follow Skynyrd on stage, and they almost all got into a fistfight backstage.

This song always sets a story off in my head. As the protagonist is telling his girl that he is a free bird and that he has to leave, I always imagine a large bird such a hawk or eagle as the slower first part of the song seems to represent the bird circling and climbing then when it high enough it begins to dive, picking up speed and soaring and break neck speed through the canyons as it heads out of town and this is represented by the guitar solos. Such a beautiful song yet rocking at the same time.

As for Led Zeppelin 'Whole Lotta Love' live from msg 1973. As for Deep Purple there's a video on KZfaq of them rehearsing the song 'No No No' for a performance at The Beat Club. The video is 'No No No' take 2' I've never seen anyone react to it and the performance is outstanding. Great reaction! This was Southern rock. .I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium .in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert that killed several people and ended the band for 10 years. I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions. Freebird and Stairway to Heaven are the BEST rock songs EVER. Sadly after this show, half the band passed away in a plane crash. Listen to Sweet Home Alabama. Also, check out the Rossingtin-Collins band - two of the survivors from Lynard Skynard.

Lynyrd Skynyrd albums were great, but when the original group played live, they were off the charts perfect every time. Their electricity was felt before they even started playing. Fly high Freebirds!

Now you will understand when people say "I want to Rock and Roll', Not hear rock and roll, not play rock and roll, just Rock and Roll.

I was lucky enough to see this band with it's original members in 1977 before the plane crash. They closed the show with Freebird and unfortunately a few months later 3 band members perished.

I do think your reaction is such that you found some of the "root" of your favorite 'metal' and 'hard rock' genres.
