The thing I really like about the solo at the end is it isn't simply instrument, it is actually telling the second half of the story. The first part of the song is explaining to his girl he he needs to be free. He finally breaks it off with her, and flies free, and that is when the solo starts, that is what his freedom sounds like. That is how I see it anyway.

This is one of those "Speeding ticket" culprits. You put that one while cruising - and during that outro guitar next thing you know you're doing 80 and got no idea how that happened!! Amazing what real musical artists can do with their instruments - no computers, no digital parts - all played in real time with one another like a well oiled machine.

80?? how come you took your foot off the pedal?? Only joking. Different speed limits in the UK, 70 the limit on major roads so a lot cruise at 80. With one eye on speed cameras, naturally. I did live in the US for a while over 40 years ago and remember the freeway limit being either 50 or 55 which did seem slow. Never forget returning from a Jackson Browne concert at Rosemont Horizon, Chicago with friends in their camper van. The driver lit a joint and next thing we were hurtling down the freeway. I'm busy saying prayers. The driver did spot a police car ahead, he slammed on the brakes, his spliff out the window and fortunately we returned home slow and safe.

@@Janetjrfan not really, Knebworth has a couple good close up guitar shots about 3 seconds and then the camera zooms out again. @@bethshadid2087 Here's one I just learned about today. Mae Axton, Hoyt Axton's mother, introduced Elvis to Col. Parker after Elvis performed in Jacksonville. She had moved to Jax in '49 with her military husband. Mae co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel", which was a #1 hit for Elvis. Hoyt wrote "Joy To The World" ("Jerimiah was a bullfrog..."), which was a #1 for Three Dog Night. The only mother/son songwriters to each write a #1 song.

I love what y'all were saying about the respect for guitar players and rock music because it is so different every sound is different. You should watch the Oakland concert that's when you really see the three guitar players playing together and it's just amazing

The Best Version is them playing Live in Knebworth, England in 1976. They opened for the Rolling Stones. The stage was shaped like a Big Red Tongue and Mic Jagger had told all the other bands to stay off of the tongue and that it was reserved for the Stones. During " Free Bird ", Ronnie leads the 3 guitarists down onto the tongue where they burned the place down. Mic Jagger was pissed and said L S would never open for the Stones again. When they came back to the U S, a reporter asked Ronnie why did he disobeyed Jagger's request. Ronnie replied, " I just wanted to prove the wrong band opened that day and we did ".

This came out the year I graduated from high school, 1973. My group of friends used to hang out in the neighborhood park in Brooklyn, NY with a circle of boom boxes (they were popular back then, some taking a dozen D batteries) and when this came on the radio we all turned them up blasting loud. I always loved this song, just because of the feel of it. I still love it after all these years. I'm glad to see younger folks enjoying the stuff from the past. "Hold On Loosely" by 38 Special is another great southern rock song you might enjoy. It doesn't have the wow factor of this song, but it's still an excellent song in my opinion.

To get the full impact of the skill that this band has ,you need to watch the live from Oakland 1977 performance. To witness the great guitar playing and how the crowd goes absolutely insane is worth seeing. This will give you a true feel of what it was like to go to a real concert with real singing and real instruments and fans who are there for the music, unlike the computerized ,lip synced fashion shows of today, where people are there to be seen and put pics on their Instagram.

Why does everyone choose this live version. IT'S NOWHERE NEAR THE BEST LIVE VERSION!!! Choose the England concert where The Rolling Stones almost refused to follow them on stage and promptly fired them from the tour because they were too good.

Do the Oakland Colosseum performance one so you can see the crowd!! And it’s a little bit different cus there’s more solos (even w the piano 😄). You’ll love it! ❤️ 🙏🏼✌🏼the energy between the crowd and the band is *insane* and you’ll def wish you would’ve been there for it! Also there are four strings players (3 guitarists and one bassist) 🙂

It is completely fair to give this song a second reaction and do one of the 1970s LIVE versions. Just WATCH these guys rock out on those solos... its impressive with studio sound... but to do THAT on stage, LIVE... it was mindbending energy.

Had front row seats ( Milwaukee) ‘74 and to see these 3 guitars going after it was amazingly. Hard to explain what it was to see what they could do together was amazing. Some of the riffs were performed by all 3 in unison. A Southern Rock Masterpiece.

Imagine you are in an old school Mustang with the top down, cruisin' in a world with no cell phones, no internet, no 24 hour tv, disconnected from the world with just your friends in the car jamming to music like this, Zeppelin, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath etc. We were free as birds back then in our youth. Totally different world. Everything was raw and real. No digital touch ups. No auto tune, just young people with talent on instruments. Amazing simple time back then. Glad you enjoyed it. To some of us that lived it, it was a joy to see people react to this music.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has three lead guitars not just one, That's why there is so much sound, Garry Rossingtom lead guitar and slid, Allen Collins lead Guitar, Steve Gaines lead Guitar,, Leon Wilkenson bass guitar, Billy Powell Keys, Artimus Pyle drums, And Ronnie VanZant lead vocls , All but Gary Rossington and Artimus Pyle has passed, Ronnie VanZant Steve Gaines and Steves sister and one of the backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in the plane crash. The three lead guitars were killer.

Your enjoyment of this song is so enjoying to watch! I love how sincere yall are on this channel, and really like the way you describe what you are hearing and seeing. When I was in high school, in the early 80's, it was pretty much common knowledge that the best two songs were Stairway to Heaven and Freebird. No one really took it much further than that! Thanks for doing what you do!!! Peace and blessings!!! (And if you want to do more Skynyrd, Gimme Three Steps is fun, Give Me Back My Bullets is swampy, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe is super sweet...
