Its amazing to think how many great albums, Skynyrd would've put out with Gaines in the mix. It seems like the band was hitting a great stride before the plane crash.

To consider that LS had the good fortune to have had the likes of Ed King to help build the catalog and create the legacy sound of the band, and then Steve Gaines to help them to a whole new level. Allen and Gary were amazing guitarists and bandmates, but having that cool 3rd guy for them to play off of. Ed and Steve were both the “straw that stirred the drink”.

Steve Gaines added a whole new dimension to the Skynyrd sound. I will never forget the concert at Lakeland Civic Center and the intensity with which they played.I can still smell the stage burning under Ronnies bare feet. What an awesome legacy he left behind.Long live L.S.

BLS is awesome. Zakk Wylde is an incredible guitar player. That is why their cover of this song means soo much to every true Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. You had to be living in Florida during the 1970's to appreciate the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Just accept the music for what it is. A reflection of your life! Peace!!!

I consider this gem to be Skynyrd's most underrated song!!. When you mention Street Survivors most people think of "That Smell", Top 40 hit "What's Your Name", "You Got That Right", and "I Know A Little". Those were the songs that got played the most on the radio. However, every time I hear this song, it seems like I've heard it for the first time and each time it just blows me away. First of all, the lyrics are simply fantastic ... some of Ronnie's best. This song has a story to tell and Ronnie knew how to tell stories. While this song isn't as commercial as What's Your Name nor does it rock as hard as That Smell, the music in this song is amazing. It is definitely one of their more complex arrangements and I just love the way this song flows. Gradual changes and tweaks throughout the song, keeps the music fresh. This song just keeps evolving. Furthermore, there is something addicting about this song. Every time I hear this song, I just want to play it again and again. It also features some of the band's best guitar work (Steve was such a force). I only wish they would have been able to make a few more albums. This song, I Know A Little, and You Got That Right were proof that the sky was the limit for Mr. Gaines.

Whew, so glad Kevin Elson got a hold of the original version of Street Survivors (example here) before it got released. They re-did the entire album under his guidance (the one ultimately issued in 1977) and it was a much stronger, richer album than the original recordings.

Why's everybody fighting for Skynyrd or BLS version ? Personnally I prefer Lynyrd version, but what ? If someone prefer Bls version, what's the problem ? There's no "right" genre of music. All music are equals, there's just Justin bieber, lady gaga, Shakira and Black eyed peas that are under all others. But if someone like this type of music, it's his problem. Stop critics, guys. Just appreciate music you like, and let other peoples appreciating music they like.

@85bmb - I wouldn't say that. I LOVE Black Label Society's (BLS) version, but the songs are completely different in feel. Ronnie and the boys made this version a lot more chirpy and upbeat, whereas Zakk and BLS made the song feeling more pain. They are both excellent version. However, BLS's version is nowhere near better. (Oh and the word is spelled "a lot" not "alot")
