Brother…this is the type of music that transcends race, generations, economics, etc. This is music that speaks truth across the realities of life that we all experience no matter where you find yourself on this Earth.

It speaks volumes that a song about living simply is the one that so easily transcends all the complications (race, age, status, etc) that we construct around ourselves. It really shows just how unnecessary all those constructions are. When it comes to living a fulfilling life, none of that matters one bit.

Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother died and taking some advice Gary Rossington's mothers gave to her son, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.

I was raised by a single mother from the age of 2, and she really held it down the best she could, but man sometimes a young boy just needs someone (a grandmother, a mother, in my case a father) to sit them down and just let them know everything will be alright. It gets easier with time and even though I'm turning 40 in a few months... the song, the words, his voice... it all just hits me a little too hard, I couldn't help but tear up writing this. I learned throughout my years life is hard, it's just hard for everyone. I try to do my best to not make it any harder on myself or for anyone else. I dunno man I guess just love the people who you have in your life, even if it's just a hand on their shoulder... it goes a long way.

@@livefreeprintguns I loved your comment, especially the part about “even if it’s a hand on the shoulder”. I think they sounded better live. First saw them in 1976, and didn't even know who they were. I went to see Ted Nugent. Ronnie came out on the stage barefooted, took a swig of Jack Daniels, put it on the stage by the mic, and introduced the band. They then proceeded to totally blow Ted Nugent out of the water. I was hooked. I was also at their last show in Greenville, SC, in October of 1977. We got the news the next day, and all my friends came to my house to grieve together.

I first heard this when I was 17 and I found the truth in it back then. I was always told that I had an “old soul”, but now that I’m pushing 50, everyone now tells me that I live like a younger man. I'll say this. As far back as I can remember whenever this song would play my mom would say this is her song to me. To this day she still says it. I'm 32 now and this song can't play without me thinking of my mom and the advice the lyrics hold. It is good advice and in many ways I can see how it has influenced my life and my decisions. Especially when I finally grew up enough to forget I already knew everything. I've been incredibly blessed in my career and life and have probably lost sight of that wisdom at times, but I've hit bottom a few times and had to rebuild too. And those times are when these lyrics really hit home.

There is a lot of knowledge in the lyrics. In 1973 (when the album came out I just finished my sophmore year and gettting ready to go to work after school.. I had bought a cheap turntable/record player. i hooked it all up and started play some albums I had. It was a Saturday and I had just bought the Lynard Skinner album. My mom heard me playing it in my room and came in there. She asked me if I listened to the song that just played (Simple Man). She told me if I paid attention to the words of that song. I told her not really, she told me to start it again. She stayed in there until it finished, then told me to listen to the words until I knew them and follow those words the rest of your life. I have never forgot the words or what my mother told me. After I got older and moved out of the house she asked for the record so she could play it for my two yonger brothers. She gave them the same instructions to memorize the words. As we got older she would asked us to recite the words for her. She did that to us for many years and would occasionally ask use to recite the songs words.
