@@LyonsArcade You might want to try glazing medium. It makes paint semitransparent, the idea is being able to do layers and to gradually blend he existing paint with the new one if the color match is not perfect. I use it for miniature painting. Anyway, amazing job as always.

How to remove the mylar: 1) Yank off the mylar 2) Send to Ron for repainting 3) Good as new

thought that mixing paint in bottle caps was interesting. I like using clear condiment cups like they have at fast food restaurants where you squirt it into the cup from the big pump jar. I can keep a mix I have covered for later use if I miss something. I can use the clear cup to put a sample on then hit it with a hair dryer to dry it and then put the clear cover over the play field artwork and look through it to compare the colors side by side. the last use I have for them is when removing hardware from the play field. I put each section its own cup to not confuse the parts and to keep them from rolling away. I use different sizes for what I am going to be using it for. small for paint and large for holding screws and those plastics retainers

The 8 ball target was originally rectangular on this game, the round target that's there will work, but if you just miss the target to the right or left side the ball will smack the metal bracket behind it. Nice job on the touch up as usual

I have removed mylar in the past and get it off clean, but YOU MUST take your time. A single piece can take a 20 hours or more. I use a razor blade and goof off, test your paint to make sure the goof off will not damage the paint. The first step is to saturate the edge with the goof off, let it soak for a while. Then start to chip the edges with the razor blade and only hit the softened glue. Each time you make progress add more goof off. Rinse and repeat until it is off, IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME>

Ron, I've been watching your videos a few months as I have a pinball I've had for about 10 years and have picked up a few tips. I'm so glad you did this today. Mine has largely worked fine, although there's three pop bumpers that need sorting (which I can do at some point). But there are two things that annoy me about it - the external paint needs attention as it's faded. But the playfield has mylar across it in one big piece and they made a hash of it. Bubbles and so on. I was reticent to touch it, but I was wondering about heat gunning it and testing on a corner. Now I shall. And thank you for the clearcoat thing, I was also thinking about that too, should the mylar go well.

Damn, that "sticker-removal" damage is common even on the furniture I work on! Sometimes people will buy their kid a really nice desk or something for college, and they'll plaster stickers all over it. Of course, when you go to remove it, it pulls up the finish like that and makes it hell to fix! Interestingly, you can use acrylic paints to touch up wood finishes as well if you're delicate and patient. If you water it down heavily and work in really thin layers, you can even get it to look pretty damn close to a legitimate stain. (You have to clear-coat it like you do with your machines to protect it, though!) I suppose my question is, then, how *do* you remove mylar safely from these old machines? I figure it's probably really involved --- probably to the point of not being worth it from a business-perspective. But perhaps for an enthusiast who's willing to put the time into their own machine, what would you suggest?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
I've never sucessfully done it, but you can freeze it off (get the glue really cold) then slowly pull it away (over hours), or you can heat it up and pull it off slowly (over hours) not worth the trouble to me, but there are videos around of people doing it. They nearly always screw up the paint though on these old machines because the entire playfield's surface is covered in cracks.
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 3 жыл бұрын
That playfield is in such good condition. Such a shame about the mylar was removed like that. For its age, that playfield is overall excellent. Mixing the paint in the cap is fine, as long as you rinse the cap after. They only say don't mix in the cap in case you contaminate the other paint.

I actually got a problem you describe with a Bally/Midway game called Heavy Metal Meltdown. It is about the capasitors mounted on "Fast Acting Features". They mounted capasitors on the rollover switches in the top lanes. Did Bally/midway redesigned the swithmatrix so bad so even if it was a "Fast Acting Feature" or a slow one it needed a capasitor? What was happened is that the game suddenly counted up points without hitting anything. Thanks for a great video.

@MrVectrex

JOES CLASSIC, Does all pinball games in the 70's and 80's always have a LAMP Test and Switch TEST diagnostic modes? I thought most 70's and early 80's pinball games don't always have a Lamp test and switch test diagnostic modes only some pinball games do?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
They do all have a lamp test and a switch test... but the ones on Gottlieb games aren't very good (the System 1 games) because the test cancels after a few seconds, it's hard to use!
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 3 жыл бұрын
@@LyonsArcade The 70's and early 80's lamp test and switch test will test each lamp separately, switch test separately, solenoid test separately one by one? Because when I watch your repair videos I don't see you using the lamp test, switch test, solenoid test. Mostly you do it manually one by one and right down on a piece of paper which ones are bad but that takes 30mins to do it the long way. Why don't you use the lamp test, switch test, solenoid test modes?

You can actually WAX it, wax is a cleaner and since it's oil based it won't usually take any of the paint off. A lot of the paint is water based and when you spray windex or something on it it makes the paint run. Wax works great though....

Hey Ron, great video man. What clearcoat did you use? I'm guessing you sprayed it on because the playfield was blank, but what if you are just doing a small area after doing touch up with acrylic paint like you are using? Also how would you recommend to apply it on, brush, sponge or paper towel like you did with the paint? Thanks!!
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 3 жыл бұрын
I spray it on with just regular rustoleum clear coat you can buy at Lowes, and when I'm doing just a small part I just spray that part too. If you do it in satin once you wax it you can't tell where the spray ends and the original finish of the playfield starts. It originally had some sort of clear coat on it anyways....

Still amazing how good of an artist you are. Most left handed people are artistic. I went to Catholic school, and Catholics think that left hand is the Devil, so they hit the kids, starting as soon as they can, even in preschool, they hit any kid who is left handed, every time they use their left hand, to " train " them to be right handed. I use my right hand now, and my writing is horrible. I often think what I might have been able to do if I was left handed. I can't draw at all. I wish I didn't go to Catholic School Was not my choice.
