Its a cool bit of work for an early SMG, the charging handle is neat in that it would mean less holes in the main tube for stuff to find its way in (don't mud test it!) and there's some interesting thought going into the rate reducer. Some decent take down for maintenance and replacement is cool to see and for an SMG bolt, that's quite a bit of elegant machining. I can feel a bionic thumb being needed to load the big banana mag though!

The Reason for 7.65mm Luger cartridge is the fact that Finnish army had purchased lot of German Lugers in this caliber, not necessarily because of preference for the cartridge, but because of the limitations imposed by the theary of Versailles on manufacturing weapons in 9mm Parabellum.

I never thought in a million years you'll covered m/26. One of the earliest system with an air buffer reducer. The Nambu experimental SMGs (T1A, T1B, TII) had a similar system. I don't know how good a air buffer reducer would work in 8mm, maybe since it didn't go beyond the prototype stage I assuming it didn't work. Then the Type III which is a basic blowback operated SMG, eventually became the Type 100 SMG.

Have you seen the unknown soldier (tuntematon sotilas)? It's such a great film, the book is better like always, but I really enjoyed the modern remake of the film, 2017 I believe. I suggest it to anyone interested in Finnish military history. It's obviously not based on a true story, but there are a lot of accurate details. The books goes into a lot more detail of Finnish culture though. I dunno about now, but it was required reading when my father in law was in school. I read it on his suggestion and I really enjoyed it, I learned a lot about the Finnish culture from the book and the Film.

Many of the characters in the book are based on real persons and at least some of the events in the book are based on true events of what the writer Väinö Linna experienced in the continuation war or heard when serving in the Jääkärirykmentti 8, JR8 (Jaeger Regiment 8) and as a drill instructor during the war. For example junior sergeant Antero "Antti" Rokka was based on junior sergeant Viljam Pylkäs, captain Kaarna was based on captain Toivo Kärnä, private Rahikainen was based on private Kauko Rummukainen and so on. The event with the dual execution after a drumhead court-martial really happened in the Jääkärirykmentti 9, JR9 (Jaeger Regiment 9) and there are also other events that are based on true events, but most have been modified at least to some extent.

Man it’s unfortunate that the air pressure idea failed. That would have been an amazing feature to have on a military weapon, I’d imagine. Slower fire rates for more control (longer ranged shots would be made more controllable) or high rates of fire for target rich environments. Is there a modern equivalent to this idea?

The most important change from m/26 to m/31 was the front end of the bolt. In m/26 it looks like a Sten or Bergmann, in m/31 it's narrower and the receiver before the chamber has less space for the cartridge to misfeed. It's a pity that the estate of Aimo Lahti sold the first handmade Suomi prototypes to Wehrtechnisches Studiensammlung in Koblenz, Finnish Army was not interested...

It's easy to see why some designs evolved while others went extinct... in hindsight. At the time I'm sure the designers of this gun knew they were on to something but had no idea how far it could go. Consider the other designs Ian has shown us from the same era that their designers thought had promise but failed miserably only to have some of their design features scavenged and built into other weapons. There was lots of competition in firearms design, lots of disagreement on tactical doctrine among military planners, lots of "solutions looking for problems", lots of might-have-beens. This channel has taught me so much of all of that. This gun has the brutal elegance of a (now) obvious standout prototype in that evolution.
