My grandfather who is from Quebec said that when he was a kid his family and friends would sing this together as they tapped spoons on their knees and clapped. What a cultural treasure; no wonder I love this song to this day (I didn’t know this until about 30 minutes ago)

Oui. Il faut savoir que, contrairement à ce que l'on pense souvent, les ancêtres des Québécois ne venaient pas uniquement du Nord-Ouest et du Centre-Ouest. Énormément étaient Gascons, Limousins, Auvergnats, Languedociens, Provencaux, etc... Ainsi, il est fort probable que cette chanson ait été influencée par l'héritage Occitan.

Same as "Ferme ta Gueule" (Close your maw/mouth) in french (from France) today I think it's a bawdy song, the pun “j'ai vue le loup, le renard” (I saw the wolf, the fox) seems to refer to penises, “touché haut/touché bas”(touch up/touch down), reference to grope, and the best "laisse ça là Maman veut pas" (leave it there mom doesn't want it) I think it refers to a hole in the back. 😆

Tu sais que la langue a évolué pour les québécois aussi, j'espère ? Quand à l'accent : les colons en Nouvelle-France venaient d'horizons très différents. Et ne parlaient pas français, ou très peu. L'accent québécois venant de nos ancêtres sous la renaissance est donc une belle histoire, mais ce n'est qu'une fable. Il ne faut pas beaucoup de temps à un groupe ethnique pour engendrer ou adopter un accent.

"Boîte" in France is slang for "boîte de nuit" (night box) aka night club. But this is a Québécois traditional song. In Québec "Ferme donc ta boîte" (close your box) is an expression meaning : close your mouth/shut your trap/shut up. "Box" in this context means "mouth" in Québec. Nightclubs are informally just called "clubs" here. We don't say "boîte" for nightclubs like they do in France.
