As you know, anyone can write on Wikipedia and, in this case, that "anyone" was not well informed. However, "Morirò da re" is not about redemption or that good can come from evil. The meaning is simple: if you are convinced of what you want and what you are worth, if you are ready to face any difficulty to make your aspirations come true and, above all, if you have the talent, inspiration (Marlena) and determination, grab any opportunity (hold on to the first train with your fingers) and never give up. Because, even if you don't make it, you will still "die like a king" because you will have fought for your dreams, not giving up on yourself.

The concept of "Muse". Yes, from the nineteenth century onwards, the "muse" is the woman who inspires a painter, a soprano for whom a musician writes, today also a model for whom a stylist creates clothes, etc. In Greek culture, the Muses were 9 sisters, on whom the arts and sciences depended. However, I don't think that the classical concept is completely unknown in English literature, Keats and Yeats come to mind, but not only in the United States are dark times for literature. However, when Damiano wrote this song he was 18 years old and therefore was still under the influence of the Italian school which still cares (or should care) classical culture. Starting from Homer's "Iliad" which begins by invoking the help of the Muse Calliope (because the ancient Greek poets sang and played their works)

That's Ethan with the snakes and Damiana in drag at the end. Quite amazing for a first single as teenagers.
@henrikmunk45010 ай бұрын
Thx. They were still teenagers here, and this was their first single 3 months after X factor, under contract with Sony Italy. They were under enormous pressure, so they were desperate to get help from Marlena, so they could succeed, which they did. The video is a homage to Fellini with strange characters. Peace.

Also it seems fairly common for Italian singers to do that, I can think of a few that will say their name at the beginning of songs.

and i love when they finished the concerts with "this is maneskiiiiin" three times , i miss it! they just manifested to be "THE MANESKIN" from the very beginning and now they are , they don't have to say it but i love when they do it from time to time

Maneskin spesso parlano di parità di genere. Di accettare ognuno cosi come è. Sono contro la discriminazione. Odiano i prepotenti. I potenti! E soprattutto sono liberi da ogni tipo di giudizio. I hope you read this with traduzione 😅

I will probably comment again later since I just started watching and paused to make this comment. For me there are 4 or 5 songs that tell the story of Marlena. First is L'altra Dimensione where they meet the muse Marlena and she takes them to Il Ballo della Vita (the dance of life, which Damiano has tattooed across his collar) In Morirò da Re they are in love and know with her by their side they will Die as a King In Le Parole Lontane they start to feel the inspiration wane and feeling her becoming distant from them. Torna a Casa when they feel they may disappear if she doesn't come back home. And for me Il Dono della Vita (The gift of life) from the Rush album is also for her.

Saying 'Maneskin' at the beginning of the song is a kind of 'sonic signature', it is a custom taken from the world of Trap and Rap music, the author says the name or nickname of the person/band who created the song and in this way 'signs' the song, it is an 'audio logo'. Maneskin for the first two years of their existence (2017-18) often used this 'sound logo', then, from 2021, after becoming 100 times more famous than in the beginning, they stopped using this signature, by now they are very recognisable.

The Muse is something coming from the classical literature, definitely very popular among Mediterranean ancient cultures such as the Greeks, the Romans but also later on in history...thinking of Dante for example. Possibly that concept stayed more alive in our arts and culture ( I am also Italian), to a more general degree not necessarily or specifically in music

A thing about Måneskin is that they don't really like giving explanations for their songs, so you can find them giving more than one meaning and probably none of them is exactly right lol I appreciate it cause it gives the listeners some room for personal interpretation.

I guess the concept of a muse as an ispirational identity is more familiar in the Southern of Europe because of classicist heritage from Romans and Greeks that is portrait in architecture remains and in literature still studied nowadays in school... I imagine the concept of inspirational entity becomes especially significant for a group of young friends, 15-17yo when writing this song, who strive to become a successful band in a country where a rock scene is basically non existent and all chance of being noted is left to talent shows.

Muse is inspiration and the fire that is inside every artist and that allows him to create Art. The "game" is not having it but being able to keep it and you can only do this by remaining true to yourself and being free (with respect for others) to show yourself for who you are.
@TheSawjones10 ай бұрын
I think the wikipedia explanation is more about the video itself than the lyrics - the representation of beauty being born out of a "freakshow". It's one of those videos that are all about letting your freak flag fly - and if you pay attention each of the members of the band have a "persona" in the video that they are finally free to express. Victoria is the angel/BDSM lady, Thomas is the silver man, Ethan is the snake man and Damiano is the drag queen at the end. I think the idea of a muse may be more common to them because, well, it was born out of Greek (and later Roman, like them) mythology. The "muses" were originally goddesses of literature, arts, science, poetry etc, so it makes sense that they "created" their own: Marlena, the muse of music, freedom and beauty. Fun fact: you see a physical representation of Marlena in the music video for Le Parole Lontane, and "Marlena" is listed as a "ft." in the album. Also, I think they mentioned always saying the band's name before the song in old songs because they always had to when busking on the streets. You need to make sure people remember your name etc. I think it's endearing, if a little silly lol it really show their street performers roots.

My English teacher said that the best translation is approximate because each term has a meaning that is influenced by the culture and way of feeling of the people who use it and each people has its own unique way of feeling. For this reason the meaning of "muse" in Italy will never be as it is understood in the Anglo-Saxon world, especially American because it is a different culture and the vision of life and the interiority of man is different. But music is universal and can convey a concept better than words 🤗

In that album they have many songs about the struggles of an artist. The concept of inspiration as divine (or at least spiritual, but still a being) is not new at all, it roots back in Greek mythology and probably comes from even earlier. The parallel (and ambiguity that ensues) with an actual lover is competely intentional in their earlier songs.

I agree that they have no bad songs. A couple that are just ok maybe, but everything else is good to great. The one song that I thought was BAD on my first listen is now in my Top Ten, being BLA BLA. Once I got it I realized it was brilliant, especially seeing it live.

If you are a rock lover, try listening to "Geese" in their second and latest LP "3DCountry", a masterpiece, they are a band from Brooklyn New York. You won't like their music right away, it requires many listens, but when you learn the counterintuitive melodic lines, you will enjoy it a lot, the singer has an incredible ability of vocal modulation and their compositions are very innovative
