Måneskin[a] are an Italian rock band formed in Rome in 2016. The band are composed of vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio.[3] Performing in the streets in their early days, they rose to prominence after finishing second in the eleventh season of the Italian talent show X Factor in 2017. Their international breakthrough ensued when the foursome won the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 for Italy with the song "Zitti e buoni".
The band have released two studio albums, Il ballo della vita (2018) and Teatro d'ira: Vol. I (2021). They have also released one extended play, Chosen (2017), and 12 singles, which have topped the Italian and European music charts. They have collected 34 platinum and 7 gold certifications from FIMI,[4] and have sold over one million records in Italy before their post-Eurovision breakthrough.[5] Up to that point in their career, their most successful Italian single was "Torna a casa". In 2021, Måneskin became the first Italian rock band to reach the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, with their songs "Zitti e buoni", "I Wanna Be Your Slave" and their cover of The Four Seasons' "Beggin'" reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, collecting multiple international certifications for sales of over three million copies internationally, and four million in total. They received their first Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
As of 2022, Måneskin have sold an estimated 40 million copies worldwide and garnered 4 billion streams across all streaming platforms, as well as 6 diamond, 133 platinum, and 34 gold certifications.[6]

I think the main issue with album (or at the vary least, one of big issues) is one that is hard to avoid, this is their first almost entirely English language album, and it has all the awkwardness that often comes from English not being your first language. Teatro d'ira had some amazing music but most of it is in Italian.

i dont even get why they are doing so. italian sounds so good in music and if you are not having any real message in your songs who cares whether your audience can or cannot understand the lyrics?? their last two albums were great especially the italian songs but besides gasoline rush! is just trash 😭😭

I assume you know Beggin’ is a cover they did as teens. I would agree that the album is not as good as their last one, just too many songs, and less cohesive. BUT, I love his voice. I saw them in concert last month, they mostly did their more aggressive Rock. The crowd was very diverse, all ages to my surprise, a lot of other older Rockers like myself. They are BETTER live, crazy energy and crowd appeal. Their musicianship Live is as good or better than on the recordings, which isn’t true for a lot of bands/performers. I’ve seen a lot of major Rock bands live in my life, these guys are up there! There are a couple of “meh” tracks I agree. I always need to listen to a song twice to really appreciate it. BLA BLA, the first time through was “what?”. Well the second time through was “this is dope” Now, I see it as a hugely successful experiment. I would also say that, again their Italian songs are awesome, but always require an analysis of the English translation, as they are much deeper and very poetic. If English was their first language this band would be huge in the USA.

I'm a fan of this band, their show in Philly was amazing, this album?? Ummm, listened top to bottom, all 17 tracks...my take is that half of them were genuinely fun catchy grabbers...the rest were either growers or awkward, and they alternate...but I want to listen all year to give a proper assessment...the new Jet?? Ummm no, Jet were not great, saw them live & openers Sloan blew em off the stage...Maneskin are a much better live band & being Italian Eurovision winners makes them more interesting...remember Lordi??? Finnish Eurovision winners who were mask-wearing shock rockers & their songs were fun & catchy...Maneskin are more the new Lordi but instead of updating Rob Zombie & Alice Cooper, they are updating 70s Bowie & other UK glam rockers of the time...Rush!! is not a disaster but not album of the year either, I want to follow Maneskin to see how they evolve...and I do like Damiano's voice...

That Jet-comparison really stung. I can see where you're coming from, but I still think Maneskin have way better musicianship than Jet. That's the main reason why I like them: despite their antics and sometimes goofy lyrics, they're great musicians and some of their songs are catchy and a lot of fun. I enjoyed their last album, which had great songs like Coraline and Zitti e Buoni, but there were also others I really don't care for. I also think Damiano David is a great singer, but even I can admit his voice can be a bit much sometimes. 'Supermodel' is definitely the highlight of this album, if only because that chorus is damn catchy. Also, I'm super stoked you're doing new release reviews again! I was honestly kinda sad when you discontinued those new release videos. I completely understood your decision given the circumstances at the time, but I had discovered so much great music through those videos. It's also a great way to keep up with new music and find something I might like. I'm definitely looking forward to what's coming next!

In Europe their songs 'Zitti E Buoni' and 'I Wanna Be Your Slave' were massive hits too, so the Jet comparison doesn't really sound right to me, especially with their overt queerness and making statements about that during performances. To me it seems more like a (pardon the pun) rushed job. They already had an album out before they won Eurovision, so the hype had to be extended with constant touring and a new album really quickly, which explain why there are so many outside songwriters (The album before had zero), just English songs about fucking, instead of their more sophisticated songs they used to write in Italian and a lot of songs for the streaming algorithm to catch up on (the previous release had 8 songs). I just hope they can learn from this and can show the potential they obviously have. It's just nice to see a rock band have mainstream success, you know ?

This album was not a um Rush job at all...found out it took 3 years to create & the band wanted to show their evolution...the record does not sound like it came from the same sessions or period of time, and that was intentional...as for queerness, they are not gay, they just have an eccentric glamrock fashion sense, which was sexually questionable in the early 70s with Bowie & Bolan & the other UK glam rockers...
@michaelmacvittie6977

The Jet comparison is apt. Jet had a number of songs nobody really remembers despite being hits, and ultimately they just burned out due to hype. “I wanna be your slave” ran its course quickly, “Beggin” has run its course as well, and I haven’t heard a single played anywhere from this new album. While they might continue as a not-so-big band, the massive and instant hype this band received ultimately kills bands like this because they always try to capitalize on it with nothing prepared.

Today I was looking up the credits for this album and Oh my God... this thing is packed with pop song writers... their last Album Teatro d'ira vol. 1 had no writing involvement besides the bandmembers themselves. The thing is not overloaded with outside writers...the band co-wrote every song & it lists all 4 members, and Max Martin was involved with some...I think they just enhanced the band's writing & being English is not their native tongue, with 15 of the tracks in English, not surprised there was some collaboration, but the important thing is the record still sounds like Maneskin, not a generic version of an LA band or British band...so it may not be a masterpiece but not a disaster either...

If they cut the tracklist to 10-12 songs and rewrote a good chunk of the lyrics, it'd be decent. However, as is, 17 tracks of bad lyrics and pretty one-dimensional instrumentation makes this a big drag. 3.5/10 for me

As you said, if you have the right mindset it is fun. If not, it is boring. I only listen to maneskin if I am in the “maneskin” mood. I agree with you also on Vic bass “skills”, and they are pretty basic. But not in the punk way. I get same feelings as I get from a pop album. On the other side, I think you understimate the lyrics. Even if they clearly are a group in their early twenties, I think they send strong messages, even with bla bla bla or cool kids. And, above all, they make new generations listen to rock. Short strory _I have a tattoo studio, and I give clients the possibility to create the soundtrack for their tattoos. I go through a lot of shit. But when I see someone put an entire maneskin album or a song or two by them, I put in some classic and 90’s rock and they always enjoy it! We often end up talking 4 hours about Rock music, and I have to thank maneskin for this._ At this point I hope they put out all this crappy but fun stuff now, and evovolve into something interesting while growing up/old.

Maneskin's career trajectory just saddens me. I'm glad to see them succeed in a way abroad, but at what cost? Been a huge Eurovision fan since forever, seen them won, seen them build a fanbase both via ESC and the hype on TikTok mostly consisting of teens simping over Damiano and Victoria, and had to see them trying to build a career for the international market. Their Italian stuff are miles better than whatever they're forced to sing in English. Zitti e Buoni alone trashes over any English release of theirs. Their English releases are literally milk toast with the side of teen anger and bragging over popularity.

I appreciate you being more fair to this album/band than others and highlighting it’s good qualities. Pitchfork’s review was especially dismissive to the actual content of the album and just held it up as “everything wrong with modern music” and rants about the algorithm or something (pretty much the exact same review as their one for GVF). It’s a fun album for what it’s worth imo and I had a good time listening.

I despise "Beggin'" solely because it's a terrible cover of the all around excellent 1967 version by the Four Seasons that even today sounds absolutely timeless. If you listen to that and compare it to the newer covers by Måneskin or Madcon, they're largely identical except for the stuff they unnecessarily changed without making it better.

Måneskin or Maaneskin (Å=Aa) is a Danish word meaning moon light. They took the name because the bass player is half Danish. I like them and the album. As far as his voice I’m def on the side that likes it. I got into Japanese and Korean music when I was in middle school back in 2011. Since that point I became more interested in the sound of a song rather than lyrics. And I don’t care about what genre of music anything falls into. Pop/rock/punk it doesn’t matter. If I like the sound it’s good. I don’t like cool kids and I don’t like bla bla bla. Kinda grating to the ears. But They can be fun songs especially when live(saw them the other day). But the rest I do enjoy of the album. I think since they were being herald as the first major rock band to might get popular they are under a lot of pressure and people expect perfection. But they are experimenting and it’s fun to watch and listen to it happen.

I LOVED the lead single "SUPERMODEL" because despite heavily relying on the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" riff musically, I really liked the quirky details in the song's lyrics and thought they actually for the most part describe a lot of sex workers I know remarkably well and I also liked how towards the beginning of the song you think the narrator is just describing the woman in question but later on the narrator is actually conversing with a guy who wishes he could be in a relationship with her and the narrator reminds him she's her own woman and, besides, he looks just like her dad to her. I just thought for a barely over two minute song it had solid songwriting. 🙂 Then I heard "The Loneliest"...............and it just did absolutely nothing to me. It sounded like their blatant attempt to score their own "The Reason", but both musically and lyrically it's just painfully generic. The rest of "RUSH!" to me is somewhere in-between. I think "The Loneliest" is easily one of the album's weakest links along with "Bla Bla Bla", "Kool Kids" and "Don't Wanna Sleep", but unfortunately nothing sizes up to "SUPERMODEL" lyrically and it's a shame because they've proven previously they know how to write a compelling song with something like "Coraline". I will say the album definitely isn't lacking in personality and charisma and I do give them props for giving the energy, but imagination definitely doesn't follow suit and that's where the Jet comparison feels accurate. The Darkness may have clearly been a derivative glam rock band and you pretty much immediately knew what you were going to get with them....................but the difference between The Darkness and Maneskin is that The Darkness still, at least on their debut album and then much later on with "Last Of Our Kind", went for broke with their musicianship so that, in a sense, it still sounded fresh and inveigling. With this album, it feels more like image is in the driver's seat and musicianship is an afterthought.

They are like a Disney Channel cover band for teens that hear for first time a guitar. And their attitude "try to hard" to be "cool, rebelious, angst, unique" is too funny and false with the singer and his outfits trying to be different wearing a corset or a skirt ha ha ha lol. They really think that are unique. They are very late to the uniquess. And Damiano voice is annoying. They "fight" for a real rock and roll revolution so next you have a Max Martin in your production. The most pre-fabricated rock band now....basically they are the One Direction of rock with the looks to appeal teens withouth idea of rock music and a very pre - fabricated concept to the charts with the x factor reality show past. Sadly the teens are too into their music more for their looks that into other bands with better music but not "beautiful" looks.

Thank God there's people that agree with me. Maneskin is an average band with a terrible single. He sounds like if Eric Cartman wanted to sing like Shawn Mendez ( another bad singer ). It seems like everyone is acting like he is talented and unique.

Maneskin is just a rushed act, to me. In Italy they had basically overnight success due to a tv talent show and their youth, personalities and looks. Aaaaaand that's it. Some of their songs are clearly ripped off other artists (one is very similar to Nirvana, another resembles Idles, few of their songs are the same song?!?? 😂) so well, that's it. I'm not mad at them, just mad at all their fans glorifying bad rock because it's all they honestly know. Edit to add: it's good for a new band to get inspiration from bigger bands and do all sort of stuff. It's just that from a band with world success i expect way more.

Damn, I don't agree with you on how you talked about the band members and about the songs. I don't know what's wrong with your head but you need to get a better opinion on them, there amazing and there music is incredible! And it's not to fucking long, me and my friends love how long it was. For God sake! I met them and they were incredible!!

I gave this album a 2.5/5 for the most part. Like you said, it's just a very "meh" album. And I completely agree with BLA BLA BLA being one of the Worst here, along with Kool Kids.

Kinda hated this one, if I’m being honest. Occasionally I’d find myself getting into some of the grooves, and a lot of the guitar work. But then, he’d start singing…

So not that musically skilled? Since punk's motto: "anyone can do it" anything goes: Paul Simonon (Clash) used sticky tape on the fretword to remind which notes to hit. Then there is plentyful of great music produced with very little "musicality": Brian Eno, one of the greatest examples - he can't read music (never really bothered). In fact - if anything - "properly" trained musicians sounds more predictable than "diy" talented artists (Jimi Hendrix - one of the most glaring examples). Blah blah blah - you were dying for a chorus? But then isn't kind of refreshing no to do the obvious sometimes? Most Hard Rock is so boringly structured...Then Blah Blah Blah builds up in dynamic - it starts soft but it gradually grows in volume and gets more and more punchy and aggressive = it works as it is - proper simple punk.

I can say with certainty that this is one of the worst works by a guitarist that I have heard in recent times. The battery is repetitive, but manages to be at least operative. Other than that, the band seems like they're stuck in a mannerism of 3-note rhythms and grooves. It seems that they heard Poker Face by Lady Gaga and wanted to print Lala lala lala la la la... So much so that 3 songs are Feel, Bla Bla Bla and Mammamia. All songs on this album you manage to make this "melody" which is perfectly seen in the bass lines. No inspiration at all. The vocalist can't do anything with his voice. On Supermodel he looks not so bad. Nothing is memorable, striking or sounds like personality. It seems that they want to make a teenage "Rock", but they can neither be rebellious nor do the basics: having a riff with presence. Supermodel and Timezone are a copy of Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. At all times the guitar sounds "distorted" that it seems that it is out of tune. Not even solar he seems to be able to. Adding a second guitarist to mask this member's nullity would help. The band sounds like it wants to be a frustrated The Strokes and The Killers. The worst songs are Gasoline which seemed to be over but in the last 20 seconds manages to get worse and create pain in people's ears. Timezone that even has annoying riffs and a dull solo. Don't Wanna Sleep repeats the mediocrity of the guitarist who only knows how to make a kind of "dirty sound". The best songs, not so good, are If Not For You where the vocalist leaves his usual out of tune to manage to sing reasonably and be an average song and Gossip (with a pathetic solo) and Baby Said manage to be operant. Everything seems to be out of place here. It seems that they want to create a cadence in songs that sound bland. The Italian songs don't add much. Il Dono Della Vita has a nice bass and a reasonable sound, but the guitarist doesn't cooperate. The biggest problems really seem to be the vocalist and guitarist.

I'm looking for Eduardo Rocha's discography on Wikipedia but I haven't found anything. The Maneskins have at least conquered the world and that's a fact. They may not like it and this is normal but wanting to be a teacher when you're nobody doesn't make much sense. Then their age should not be underestimated.
