Also I'm thinking that if the Sherman had become obsolete in the early 1940s, the army wouldn't have waited until 1953 to remove it from active service-long after the M26 and even the M46 had been deployed-nor would it have curbstomped T-34-85s in the Korean War.

Said he estimates they were going 60-65 mph, maybe even faster. It was on a (closed to civilians) stretch of highway. He's been told that they can do 70+ mph for short amounts of time.

Yeah, I always hear the stories from multiple Iraq/Afghanistan veterans. M1 crews were bypassing the governor and hitting 60 mph. Used to work with a guy who was mechanic in Iraq, mostly worked on LAV 25s but every now and again had to help work on m1s. Told me he saw some dudes hot rodding the tank around for "testing purposes" said it had to be going 50+ off road. But man, that reverse speed ain't no joke.

70 MPH+ sounds like total non-sense. Unless going down a steep downgrade down hill. The 60 to 70 tons weight will actually help pick up extra top speed when going down hill to help reaching 70 MPH+ Otherwise 70 MPH+ on flat level ground road sounds non-sense even without the governor. 60 to 70 MPH is believe-able. 70 MPH+ sounds non-sense.

Australian here. As far as I am aware, the M1 may not have the fastest speed, the quickest shooting time, or even the most digitised internal systems out of any tank in the world. But I believe the M1 is the most effectively armoured tank in the world, which also has a safe design when taking into account chain reaction damage, such as exploding ammo. The M1 is probably the safest tank you could be in, and I believe it's the successive work of countless generations of American tanks that lead up to the point of the M1 and it's newer variants.
@CoryMp3 Жыл бұрын
Not to mention the suite of USA/Nato resources that back them up. Look how poorly the Russians tanks have faired in Ukraine and it would tell you how easily the west would wipe them out. I'm not saying the West wouldn't lose men and equipment. But if we can funnel a few bill-ies over to Ukraine and they can stop Russia. How would the massive might of the full USA military perform. The intelligence and precision guidance of the entire kill chain allows any weakness we have to still greatly overpower any force on the planet. Just look at the effectiveness of the HIMARS system. We've sent 30 units over there, and its basically full stop ended Russia aircraft from pressing past the front line. the US has hundreds of HIMARS. Our stuff is better full stop. There are analysts that state the US military could wage war against the rest of the world and have decent odds of coming out the other end on top. unlike our European counterparts, who we love and need. We have a doctrine of being able to fight two FULL scale wars in two theaters of war at the SAME time. To rephase our military is budgeted so that we could engage with NK/china and Russia at the same time. No other country on earth has even 25% of the power of the united states military. To say otherwise is simply ignorance.

Damn the USA (my country) made a beast of a tank, incredible speed, stopping power, armor, and ammunition, this this thing is unstoppable man
@leonardthesnifferwallace50734 жыл бұрын
Nothing is unstoppable. But it is a tough nut to crack. Attack planes and helicopters have no problem knocking this out. Fortunately for this tank the air forces of the countries they invaded were neutralized first or it would have discovered why tanks always have feared aircraft since WWII.

@Twerkulies4 ай бұрын
@@_alw_w9951 They're designed for 45mph, but if you disable the governor, they'll haul some major ass until the engine overheats or you throw a track. A buddy of mine was a tank driver and he told me they're capable of 70mph for a few minutes but that'll overheat the engine really damn quick. Assuming you don't lose a track at almost 2x the speed it's designed for lol.

The first tanks that went into action on September 16th 1916 (my infantryman grandfather was nearby), could just about manage 3-4mph and were incredibly unreliable and almost as dangerous to the crew as the enemy. They were designed to travel about one mile, ie over run the wire and trenches, then let the infantry take over.

The engine on the Leopard 2 generates almost the same horsepower as the engine on the Abrams (1479 hp vs 1500 hp, respectively), but they both have similar performance. Like you said, both are very impressive tanks and have served their countries well.
@excalibur_maga61885 жыл бұрын
@@Orca19904 they are both great vehicles however the Abrams has better armor due to DU. And are still faster then the Leo's. Leo's have a great engine but the gas turbine has a much better and wider powerband. But as a consequence to that the Abrams drinks fuel like crazy.

@flounder276010 жыл бұрын
they are amazing and loud even in the rat hole. whats funny is the throttle when you drive these things is like a little motorcycle with two grips you grab and use like a motorcycle throttle with the transmission in the middle with (its been a few years ) but it should be D N P R or something like that. P standing for Pivot gear. i remember how cool it was starting one up for the first time. the whine that just builds and builds till you cant hear anything with your crew headset off. whats great is that if your transmission is destroyed there is a red lever to your lower right that when you pull that bitch up it destroys the transmission and gives you 1 gear in forward. btw driver is the best position to be in on a tank. adjustable head rest and reclining seat that is all. my MOS was 19K which is M1 armor crew-member. PS when tis cold the exhaust ports make nifty hand warmers.
@FurryWrecker91110 жыл бұрын
flounder2760 Good to know :D I like to model and draw military hardware, and it is good to know how these huge machines work. I never knew that Tanks had transmissions either. I assumed it worked like a treaded Bobcat where you have a left and right handle for each tread.

Maneuver at 1:54 is awesome. Never saw a tank do that before.
@can_hauler3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the steering method, one method lets you do stuff like this, other method you can only turn a circle, not turn in place. The difference is how the engine output is routed to the tracks, if you can have one side go forward and one side reverse then you get this, if you can only slow down / stop one side then you get turning in a circle around the stopped / slowed side.
@Odessa4510 ай бұрын
That maneuver is called pivot steering. Not every tank can do it. Have a nice day. 😎

Notice when he slammed on the breaks to stop how the track went a bit left and he had to let off and then break again?.... The left hand side tracks have more tension on them then the right hand side tracks causing them to pull to the left. They need to adjust the left tension either a little less or increase the right tension.
