what spec do you have on it ?

@@Jo-mm3vo 2.6Ghz 4 core i7, OWC 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM, OWC 6G 4TB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, aftermarket fans and thermal paste. The improved cooling from the fans and thermal paste sped the machine up noticeably.

@@Jo-mm3vo the SSD makes a huge difference in the overall speed, and I just work with a lot of big files, so the space was worth it for me. Most people probably won’t need anywhere near that much local storage anymore.

I'm sure this was more of an arbitrary model (while also being high end and metal supported) you chose, but these cards are even less available than the new GPU's on the market. Assuming you could get one, you have to deal with more than just cooling, but power draw and space (which needs to account for a custom board and cooling). MXM B Boards are 82x105x?mm (? as the components jutting out vary in height, but my Nvidia GTX 765M measures in at 5mm), while the optical drive is 128x9.5x129mm. Assuming the WX7100 is also 5mm in height, that leaves only 4.5mm for a custom breakout board and heatsink (maybe a few mm more, as those 'jutting components' like VRMS and Capacitors are isolated to only certain parts of the card)...with a fan going somewhere out the optical drive slot too (or maybe drilling holes into the baseplate?). And no, you can't really go higher than 9.5mm, as the optical drive is already near the top of the case when closed (and then there is that WiFi/BT ribbon cable that goes over it...probably wouldn't be a good idea to have that touching the MXM GPU heatsink, so they would have to fabricate a new cable for that too. Then on power draw, the WX7100 pulls 135W (TDP), while the GT 650M is only 45W. Perhaps @iBoff RCC can educate us on whether this kind of power draw is possible from the logic board alone (the i7 2.7GHz 3820QM CPU also has a 45W TDP to consider). These MacBooks ALREADY run HOT, this added heat would almost certainly start to bottleneck the rest of the system. And then BATTERY LIFE would be absolutely SHOT, just like most gaming laptops. Running the laptop plugged in and on a solid surface (for good airflow) would help with this, but then this is starting to defeat the purpose of having this internal GPU. By no means am I dismissing the idea! Just throwing out all considerations.

@@JSnakeRepair I think a lot of what you describe can already be found on the Mac Rumours thread for the GPU upgrade on the 2009 - 2011 iMacs. There is a comprehensive list of the various compatible cards, their characteristics as well as their compatibility with the various diffeent models of imac. In general the 27" imacs have larger heatsinks and power units and can handle some of the higher wattage cards better than 21.5" models...

So PCIe x16 2.0 really does make a difference after all. Thanks for letting me know

yes, but it might need a lot of work to do. you need: - PCB adapter for TBT 1 to TBT2 chip. - Transplant TBT ROM chip from 2015 to 2012 - Replace the built in TBT firmware inside the EFI BIOS its a lot work so not even worth it.

It's the i7 2700K (or just the 2700), no mod needed.
