Thanks for the review. It's just crazy what this machine can do for a relatively low price. My main machine is a 2017 top spec iMac so it's going fine, but I do hanker for an upgrade. My laptop (only used in the field for moving data and very basic editing) is 7 years old Serious thought needed for what to do next year.

The M1 MBA is just a "coffee shop" laptop..... and it still crushes.... the fact that Video Pros are putting thru its paces is just amazing. If these early results are any indications, Apple M-Series based Macs will likely become the de facto machines for intensive computational tasks.....I'd like to see what happens when applications from Wolfram (and other related developers) become optimized.

You can run final cut in Rosetta 2 mode by going to the get info screen, and checking, "run with Rosetta 2". this should temporarily solve your plugin issue, but will cause final cut to run less efficiently.

Would like to see follow up with 16GB. For true professional I feel the next Apple version in the M series will be the answer. I am just now a normal user, and use to be in professional production. Have not use laptops for a number of years. So I am looking forward to see what Apple does with the iMac line.

I was just complaining that none of the reviews I saw had tried to actually edit anything! Thanks for this look at the system. It’s promising and in a year or two should be really intriguing. The on-site transcoding would be very beneficial.

I’ll get the MacBook Pro. I want to go into photo editing and maybe video editing in the future and I want to have the MacBook Pro for a very long time. I guess I’ll get a 16GB with 256GB. And use a SSD as well. Thanks for the honest. I’ll definitely stick with a MacBook Pro this time. I keep changing my mind a lot between the air and the pro. Since the pro is very cheap.

The fact that people are running these Macs smoothly with those heavy codecs proves it is a beast. Can't wait for the next SoC, apparently called M1X and 12 cores CPU. I'm looking forward to the next MacBook Pro 13' video. Cheers!

Its the internal hardware h265 encoder/decoder not the arm cores.

@@Teluric2 There are numerous codecs that the hardware video unit doesn’t handle. The Firestorm cores can handle it. In this particular video you are commenting in, he talks about handling two 4k Canon Raw streams - that is on the Firestorm cores.

Dude! The plug-in message KILLED me! I know they’ll all be updated at some point but I’m contemplating returning the M1 mini and sticking with an iMac for the next year or two just because of that. I have no idea when these plugins will be updated.

I just got a message on my iMac that all my motionvfx plugins have been updated with M1 support. For some weird reason those updates didn't come through on my macbook though :D But I think this is just a matter of days now. If not hours. Neat video also did a quick update after the iMac was released and my GPU wasn't supported

Hi, Am getting back to editing after a long time, it will be few minutes capsules for social media platforms and corporate presentations. I don't think I will go beyond 2K and highest length will be within 30 min. 2 questions 1. What kind of external storage do you use since Mac storage always has limits 2. How does the Mac Mini M1 compare with Macbook Air M1 in terms of performance and connectivity (lets ignore the portability part for now)

@@damiencooper data centres are already using 96 core 386 thread ARM cpus! The future of desktop M1s is very bright, as so far apple have massively invested in ARM cpus with consistent growth every generation! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Hi, nice video. If I am using Adobe Premiere Pro, FCP X, DaVinci Resolve on a base model of MacBook Air M1 but one at a time can this machine handle it? Should I consider 8 GPU 512SDD machine instead for the task. Considering the price difference of the 8 GPU machine is the base model MacBook Pro a better choice again it's just 256GB SSD. Confused between the three. Please help. If base model is fine for shot videos I am fine but please put in some light. Best!

I have been waiting for someone to make this video haha! Not because I’m gonna get an M1 Mac but I’m definitely curious, with all the hype they’ve been getting, to see how they handle cinema Raw light. I mean, I love that they have hardware accelerators that help crush the complex H.265 footage but my main camera is also the c300iii and I’m never working with H.265. It’s all raw or transcoded into ProRes so I’ve been curious about this 👌🏼

MaxTech just made a video comparing the new imac with the m1 mac mini and it's like you said. raw needs graphics power so with most of the raw codecs the imac outperformed the mac mini by over 50% in rendertimes. Really excited about what is possible with arm in the future

It's crazy to me that this little guy has SO much power. Coming from someone who's looking at spending $1700+ on a surface laptop that wouldn't be able to handle these files?? I know. Unfortunately I'm really not sure. I feel like it might as in my tests my performance kept going down the longer I edited. So the fan in the MBP might actually help with this! My GF ordered the high tier mbp so I will know more when it gets here

Did you try running in better performance mode or did you stick to full quality? I’m not a pro by any means but I need to edit multicam 4k HEVC and ordered the 8-core GPU version of the Air with 1TB storage for some portable stage (ideally I don’t want external SSDs hanging off it). I won’t get the custom order for another month so hoping it’s going to be up to the task.

I did. You can totally get away with it when editing on the macbook but it looks absolutely horrendous on my 43" screen!

why don't you just run fcpx in x86 mode? then your plugins will work too.

@@AveMcree Go into the application folder, select FCPX, hit command+i and select opening in Rosetta. Next time you open final cut it will run in through Rosetta.

Definitely 16GB for any pro apps (or basically anything but web browsing) in either the Air or the Pro. Storage has workarounds but the RAM is what it is, forever!

That slight thermal throttling on the Air that causes slowdowns after 30 seconds doesn't happen on the M1 Macbook Pro with a fan (and it's still nearly silent).

Of course it didn't happen on the Pro M1. It is 300 dollars more expensive than Air. But let's pause for a while and think, who ever thought the new Air can do video 4k video editing smoothly likne the new M1? I mean, it is a fanless Macbook! My previous Intel Macbook Air would would get super hot and making loud fan noise even when just starting to play a 4k video on youtube - let alone edit a 4k video!

Not being able to work with multiple monitors and lack of USB ports for peripherals and such impedes workflow more than just an export. Exporting is just an automated process. The part of the human creator to computer connection is dependent on peripherals hence Mac Pro dominates. Can we see a DIT just use this reliably on a film set please?

I’m excited for what these early machines insinuate for the upper tier machines. The fact that a MacBook Air is dissecting cinema raw light is incredible. I can’t wait for the machines that are more closely aligned with that kind of workflow. I’m also excited for an editing machine that doesn’t sound like it’s about to achieve liftoff because the fans spin up when using finder like my 16” mbp does lol.

Thanks for that, interesting review, i am currently considering the Ipad pro against the mac book pro, almost same money when you add the accessories to the Ipad. I currently use lumafusion as my editor and affinity photos as my photo editor and the apple pen is really nice to use for dodge and burn, so this would a different flow of work going to a laptop. There is rumour ipad may have FCPX and this may make the ipad a all round better option. So it is a sit pretty for a while longer to all the dust settles on these new platforms to see what is best.

I had the same decision and for me this was a no brainer! Luma fusion is nice but nowhere near as powerful as FCPX. Plus, you can start editing on a laptop and finish on your computer! The thing that prevents me the most from editing video on an ipad (even if it had FCPX) is the file system. It's such a pain in the ass, slow and uncomfortable to use. That's why I went for the macbook air and I am very happy with it!

@@damiencooper in Final Cut, when you place videos on the timeline, a dotted line appears over the videos while the program is doing "background rendering". When it is done rendering, the dotted line is gone, and playack/scrubbing is much more fluid. support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/background-rendering-ver717f3ca3/mac

if i were to make a youtube video or something just in 1080 then added a few titles, transistions, masking effects, and probably colour grading.. do u think it would run smoothly or should i get the 16 gb verion?

Absolutely. No issue at all. It’s all about the screen size at this point

Which flavor of ProRes do you use to edit?

I always transcode to 422. I think it's the best mixture of quality and size

Wouldn't have the 16 gigs of ram solved most of your problems with the Air, other than plugs not working? I had an iMac 2019 midtier 64 gigs of ram and it was slow as molasses with my Blackmagic 6K raw... Just got the Air with 16 gigs of ram, 8/8 core and 1TB ssd

I'm also fascinated M1 Macs but problem is not playback raw or pro-res files, it's exporting. It takes more than mac with external GPU.

@@Teluric2 I'm not talking about playback, it's for exporting pro-res 422 project. By the way it's 524Mb/sec files.

@@macreviewz7187 well, depends when you moved on. They did make horrible choices and turned it into imovie with the release of version 10. But they since made lots of changes and it's VERY powerful now

Were your ears burning?! LOL. I'm looking at exactly this gear : Do I buy an R5, R6, or R7 to shoot sports, and which laptop do I get to edit the stills and video? Going to save money on the computer and put it into camera gear!

Did you change the resolution to lower like is the file is 8k lower to 8k or 4k to 2k ?

no, all are 4k files in a 4k timeline played back at full res

@@damiencooper o on.. if you lower the 4k to 2k just to edit and then onces finish bring up it will handle everything even more.... i wish it was a 15 ihcn screen

@@damiencooper yea thats true , have you use DaVinci resolve? I believe is the best onces you learn to use it.. and what I have seen so far with the new DaVinci optimize for the m1 it handles everything pretty good

@@levantateyora9317 I've used it. But for my daily work and especially youtube, final cut is by far the best NLE. For different stuff Davinci out performs Final Cut by a mile.. It really depends what you need
