The CPython interpreter takes advantage of GCC/Clang’s “computed goto” and “labels as values” extensions to make the bytecode dispatch loop faster, so that should account for at least 10-15% of the performance delta between Windows and *nix.

Hey friends, do you think the base model of m2 macbook air would be enough for coding or should I upgrade the ram to 16gb. I’m an IT student and I do some tensorflow or pytorch python codes. And the second question is, is it better to upgrade the ram or ssd, due to its slower ssd on the base model? But something that bothers me is the price of MacBook air m2 with 16gb of ram and 512gb of ssd, I could buy a m1 air base model + an iPad air m1 for that pricing. Which one should I go with? The upgraded m2 air Or base model of macbook air + an iPad air.

Wow insane. Is it true? I knew it. Dell done it even on 10nm x86. For me Dell xps is best Dell xps CPU only consumes 40 to 45 at max. That's limit in bios by dell. You can use Windows subsystems for Linux. Intel 10nm is faster than 5nm and Intel never goes above 80°C unlike mac 100°C This guy never shows dell power management app. You can turn on "ultra performance mode" in Dell xps even on battery and get same performance on battery like on plugged in.

haha, thanks a lot for the WSL2 love Alex 💙 and great video as usual 🙌 For the difference of performances, only on WSL2 side, please remember it's a Hyper-V "microVM", so there's still an additional layer and WSL2 comes currently with a 5.10.x kernel while the bare metal is certainly running at least the latest LTS kernel (5.15.x) where potential improvements might have been added. Last but not least, for the fun of it I tried the script on Ubuntu (store), Arch (imported) and Alpine (imported) and the results where ... interesting: Machine: Lenovo Legion AMD Ryzen 7 5800H / 64Go / 1To Samsung SSD 980 Pro Ubuntu: 45s Arch: 47s Alpine: 1m11s If interested/interesting, I could test it with a newer kernel. im curious what happens if you have the algorithm written on the most optimized "higher language" on each os. Means Phyton on ubuntu and mac and c# on windows. i could imagine that the output of the phytonscript is slowing down powershell (since powershell is known the set flexibility over performance) and its outputstream handling is just... different. but im really suprised to see that the m1 is actually fast. not enough in my eyes to justify a change over as developer but, it is fast

Hi I feel really silly for asking this but it’s a question about Python. I’ve started about 6 web tutorials and I’ve done the hello world, made a game in terminal and a lot of other things in terminal. How exactly do you jump from that to actually building something which you can show your friends like an app a todo list a game or anything like that. I’m stuck in tutorial hell.
@AZisk
@AZisk 2 жыл бұрын
You start building something, and when you get stuck, look up a solution for your specific problem to get unstuck. Repeat until you have a finished project. Good luck.
@MrJeffpeck

There are a few ways to do what you want, and it really depends on your goal. One way is to build a web application in something like Flask, and your friends would access it through the browser. If you're wanting to actually distribute a desktop application, you are going to want to "freeze" your application. This essentially gives you a nice .exe file you can click on that has python + your application bundled inside. Since most of my work runs server side, I haven't had to do this in a very long time. Back when I was doing this, I was using py2exe. Fair warning - it could sometimes be a pain in the A@@ to get this working. I think there are better alternatives to py2exe now, but I haven't used them personally. This should at least get you on the right path! Also - if you are going to build a GUI, I have had very good success with wxPython. It is sort of an old library at this point, but still quite excellent once you get used to it.

Alex, worth to mention that is not all about the hardware, the main bottleneck in special cases would be the performace of filesystem. WSL is great, but the main bottleneck from my experience is NTFS. I did some testing on one particular project with heavy hot-reload server doing a lot of file changes at once and it was almost impossible to getting things work properly, so I need to set up a Linux Mint dual boot with ext4 file system and the project with hot-reload is running smoothly.

I have a dell 9720 and moved from Windows with DSL running Ubuntu to bare Linux running Ubuntu 22. The performance increase was terrific, also the reduction in memory consumption. Windows steals so much CPU and Memory that everything runs pretty slowly. yeah. CPython on windows is built using MSVC which has no support for computed gotos (that CPython makes use of, anyway), which strongly affects the performance of the main interpreter loop. i suspect interpreter performance depends a lot on compiler codegen quality, generally speaking, but i don't know how true this is for CPython.

i'd be surprised if it mattered much for a very CPU-bound workload. AVs tend to obliterate performance once you start being intensive on disk, to my knowledge?

Did you try M1 in linux? Curious to know if a Linux boot of M1 would change the speed

I would be curious to see the results. On the one hand the mac hardware is very good, but it has also been optimized to work perfectly with MacOS so idk if using a different OS would affect performance or not

Lower about 70 to 80 Its CPU only consumes 40 to 45 at max. That's limit in bios by dell. Watch any KZfaq video of dell xps. It also has excellent battery

Have been pondering whether to get 12th gen Dell XPS 15 (or Precision) or MacBook Max 16 for a long time. I'm a long time Dell&Linux user and do lot of heavyweight backend programming work. Finally decided to go the Apple route because it's hard to come by a 12th Gen Dell and MacBook performance per watt is really enticing (and hopefully less fan noise and heat). Watching these tests is really interesting, thanks Alex!

Not sure about Ubuntu and XPS, but on my laptop on Archlinux I also use cpupower (cpupower-gui) and set performance mode there (it's in optimised by default)
