Today, I received a 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro at a very competitive price and very close to the price of a 15-inch MacBook Air. If the MacBook Air had a better price than what Apple offered, or with slightly higher specifications, it would have been really difficult to choose between these devices.

I’m always browsing Amazon for refurbished or renewed Macs and just saw a new 14” M1 Pro 16GB RAM 256 SSD for $1479. The 15” MBA looks so good, but there’s more bang for your buck with an M1 14” MBP with the same HD space and RAM. I think the market for M1’s will be busy for a few years.

After considering the significant price difference do note that the M1 Pro has a fan for your sustained loads, a mini LED display and extra ports. Apple really shot themselves in the foot first with the M1 Air then with the M1 Pro. What a time to be a student and/or multimedia folks with these killer Apple silicon!

Great video! I have the 16GB/1TB 14in M1 Pro and have no complaints, but would definitely look at a 13in Air next time with a unified memory upgrade. The SD reader I have now is extremely useful for Lightroom, but I am not sure it wouldn’t be worth the additional weight the rest of the time.

I purchased the 15” Macbook Air (16GB/1TB) when it came out, and just sold my 14” M1 Pro Macbook Pro (16GB/1TB) today. By all accounts, the MBP should be better, however, in day-to-day use, I found the MBA to be a much better fit for me. Bigger display, better form factor, snappier response, and much better battery. I usually run about 10 concurrent apps, about 50 tabs in Safari, and occasionally Parallels. FOMO was my main reason for running a Pro to begin with. I guess, when I see “Pro” in the title, I look at myself as a “professional person” and my ego says that’s what I need, when in actuality, the 15” MBA has been perfect.

Thank you for this comment! This is my exact situation except for the fact that my M1 Pro has half the memory (512GB). I’m was debating replacing my Pro because I want a bigger screen and more storage. 16 Inch is too big, but I was worried about the performance of the 15 inch Air. I do a lot of coding and media consumption and the occasional casual game. Seems the Air will be totally fine!

I got the 13.6 inch M2 MacBook Air with 16 gigs of ram memory, and 512 SSD storage, but, kept the 8 core GPU. After comparing the 15 inch Air with the 13.6 Air, I think sound is pretty much the same, except 15 Air is louder. Yes the 14 pro versions do have better sound and screen resolution. I was really interested in the 14 inch M2 Pro cause I'm used to high end Windows desktops. Luckily my friend/lawyer brought me down to earth. He said you don't have a website anymore building webpages, so you don't need the pro MacBook, I'm getting you the Air. I'm glad he did, with the upgraded configurations, it is really great. I like that it is very lightweight and portable, much lighter than the 15 inch. After my Mac class at Soho Apple Store in NYC, I put my 13.6 Air in my crossbody laptop briefcase. I was able to walk around NYC with no strain on my shoulders. Best of all, I'm not tide to a desk, and I'm able to sit in my couch with legs on my chaise with laptop on my lap. The Pros are great if. you are keeping them in your house, but for travel the Air is better. Especially the 13.6 Air for students, and teachers lugging a laptop back and forth to school. My opinion, you should for future proofing, get the 16 gigs of ram, and 512 SSD storage. The base model can be slower with 256 storage, and you can use ram very quickly. If you're a pro video editor, photo editor, or graphic designer, then the pro models are more for you. This is my first laptop, and I love it, very user friendly. Great video, to help people decide which is best. Since my last Dell desktop with Windows 7 pro with 2T hard drive only lasted barely 2 years, and Windows screen kept on going out on me, I gave up on Windows. I'm now an Apple convert with iPhone 13 Pro, and M2 MacBook Air. But time will tell how I like it, as my first Dell with Windows XP Pro lasted 10 years.

The pro might look slightly better on the webcam but for some reason it sounds super muted on the “studio mics” the air sounds way louder and clearer… which is weird….love both these machines and am having such a hard time choosing… because I’ve really wanted the 14” but price is a factor theyre so expensive… but with the deals on the m1 its really a no brainer but the air does look amazing and with the addition of the 15” air it’s become even harder…. Would be an easy choice if they atleast upgraded the unified memory to 16gb… and brought back the dual nand chip atleast but 512 would obviously be better for base model. Would just really like to stay under 12-1300 dollars which is already expensive…

The M1 Pros renewed could have had a desperately hard life and paying that sort of money with no idea what life it had pre-renewal seems like a high-risk deal for little gain as you are effectively buying a chip from 2020!

@@ahaimes6320 processor chips are quite durable, and Apple refurbishment replaces the battery for a new one. the only risk is the TBW on the storage. in any case, Apple refurbished store gives the same warranty (and option to buy the Care insurance), so you can replace it within the one year. the target audience for the MacBook Air are folks with light computing needs anyway. so the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, refurbished, gives a better value with double the storage (faster with the two storage chips), double the memory, a better screen with HDR, better speakers. the drawback is the weight; and screen size is comparable to the 13-inch Air.

Just picked up a 14 inch M1 Pro (10 core ; 16GB / 1TB) for about 1500 USD brand new (in Malaysia) ; original retail was 2300 USD so I'm happy with the savings. The 14 inch M2 Pro ( 12 core : 16GB / 1TB ) is still 2300 USD now and I don't need a pro in the first place (was originally considering the Air) and upgrading from a 2019 13 inch Pro (intel ; 16 GB / 256GB) so I'm pretty excited. 14 inch M3 pro was too far out for me to wait unfortunately! Anyone else here has the 14 M1 pro for a while? How has it been so far?? Appreciate all experiences :)

I’ve got my base 14” m1 pro back in August. I was debating a lot between m2 MBA 13” and it. So happy I went with the pro. The screen smoothness and contrast is just another level, and with HDMI I don’t even need to use these adapters to connect a screen. Perfect laptop for life, the only thing is that it might be a bit heavy for some but mine spends 90% of the time at a desk, so it’s not a key factor for me.

While the 14" screen is smaller, it has more pixels than the 15" MBA. BTW: the 13" MBP would be a lot better than the 13" MBA if it would have an 2880x1800 screen instead off an 2560x1600. I once had a 2011 13" MBA with a 1440x900 screen so the resulting UI size seems reasonable.

That’s my dilemma. Ordered both M1 Pro and 15 Air spec’d to 16/512. Pro is about $100 less. All that stuff he ran isn't important for most people at all. The pro is better in pretty much every area that matters for day to day in that the screen is say better, sound, promotion, port selection, base specs, etc all are pro features. Plus support for multiple monitors to use as a desktop natively. Screen size is negligible to be real between the two. If you're spending the extra and want more bang for your buck gett the pro and even consider the M1 pro.

@brightboxstudio
@brightboxstudio 10 ай бұрын
8GB is fine for light duty tasks on Apple Silicon Macs (email, web, office, non-pro photo editing). However, anyone who does such light computer work that 8GB is OK, should be looking only at the Air and not the costly Pro, so they should not even be watching this comparison. Anyone who is concerned enough about performance that they are even thinking about the Pro, should be starting at 16GB minimum with any Mac they buy.
@brightboxstudio
@brightboxstudio 10 ай бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 When the first M1 came out, many reviewers and YT channels, including MaxTech here, made a big deal about how tasks that were unbearable under 8GB on Intel worked quite well with 8GB on Apple Silicon. In addition, so many tests have demonstrated tasks like video editing being done on 8GB Apple Silicon Macs, that I simply don’t agree that an 8GB M1/M2 is “no good,” even with Chrome tabs. (Starting with the February release, Chrome uses memory a little better anyway, and many basic Mac users would stick with Safari, so the whole “lots of Chrome tabs will kill your Mac” argument is starting to go out of date.) I agree that not being able to upgrade limits the useful life. And I did recommend at least 16GB for anyone doing serious work. But for the basic users I was talking about, 8GB on Apple Silicon will go a lot farther than 8GB on Intel would have. Especially given how well compressed & swap memory work on Apple Silicon.

This comparison really underrates the huge difference the screen and extra ports/displays make. The only reason to get the Air is if weight is of the upmost importance. Otherwise the M1 Pro destroys it in value; just the screen alone, MiniLED HDR 120hz vs IPS 60hz is no contest. And the SSD speed difference is so night and day that I just can fathom how you make it sound like it barely matters. And if you're a video editor the lack of SD Port is a giant pain in the ass, seriously, I hate that Apple cheapens that on the Air not that is this expensive. Color accuracy and the SD Port are two things you'll need 99% of the time as a video/photographer, I don't understand how that's so minimized here.
