After 1 month of daily use, this review will cover everything from design, to performance, to what specs to get in your new MacBook Pro. Photographers and filmmakers will love this machine for their editing workflows. My photography is never looked so good on this screen. Is m1 pro enough or do you need the m1 max chip? Did I make a mistake getting only 16gb of ram?

I got my 14" M1 Pro (un-binned w/ 32GB RAM and 1TB storage) last Friday. My old MBP was the 15" spec'd out 2014 i7 w 16GB RAM and 1TB. What a difference. I was never interested in the limited port availability on previous year MBP's and Intel systems were marginally better at best. I use Capture One/Affinity Photo after giving up on Adobe LR/Photo suite due to poor support. Very impressed with the C1 performance and a new release is coming in a few days. For general office computing I use LibreOffice and the M1ARM version is blazing fast. The fan, if it kicks on, is very quiet compared to the 2014 MBP. One of my biggest worries was the 14 going to be ok coming from a 15... I love it. Smaller and lighter. Monterey seems to be problematic and I am hoping it gets fixed soon.

The MacBook Pro 2021 just arrived in stores today here in Vietnam and the 14 is quite a bit bigger, bulkier and heavier than expected. Makes the MacBook Pro 2020 M1 look like a cute little laptop, much more suitable for coffee shops and urban living etc. The 14 makes sense as a stationary machine with occasional transport to an office.

I doubted between 32 and 16GB but went for the 32 just to be sure. Lightroom has always been very heavy on RAM and I haven't found any videos demonstrating performance with a workflow similar to mine with imports usually being 5.000 to 10.000 raw shots in one go. My current 2014 mbp really struggles with its 16GB but off course, age and processor probably are the biggest bottlenecks. Have you had any expercience culling thousands of freshly imported pictures with your 16GB? Thank you for these videos, I love the way you talk so calmly. Looking forward to the next videos !

I do general office work but I also am an amateur photographer (maybe 300 photos a week, editing on LRC) and eventually edit some videos (Gopro or Drone but not 4k). Do You think I will have computer for several years if I grab de Macbook Pro M2Pro 10CPU, 16GPU, 1TB SSD? or is too much? I think that The AirM2 will last far less.

I produce music and then use lightroom (as a hobbyist) and got the exact config you recommended, since I didn't feel like waiting one month plus for a "custom build" to arrive. but I'm now returning it for a 16/M1Pro/32g/1Tb. only reason is that i've kept my last 2 Macbooks til the "wheels fell off". First macbook was a 2011 pro version lowest spec, used it for college and live DJing and by the end of 4-5 years, the thing was spent. then i got a 2016 version (lowest spec) in 2017, and did not enjoy using it bc of the keyboard, and it wasnt great handling lightroom, or ableton to a degree. they fixed all the things i hated about the 2016 version, and this one nostalgically brings me back to my 2011 one, which i loved, and i want to keep this one "til the wheels fall off". over time, more RAM just preserves the lifespan of the device, even if you don't notice heavy performance stuff. the less pressure you put on the memory, the better (over time). plus, Adorama had them 32g/1Tb 16" in stock, and at $150 off. that made it a no brainer for me
@ChrisPieta

That makes sense if you plan on keeping it until the 'wheels fall off'. Enjoy the new machine!

Really nice and absolutely accurate Review! I got the exact same model as you did for my communication design studies. The Programs I use most are Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign with Safari (+30 Tabs), Spotify, WhatsApp and some small Apps like Calendar open in the background at all times. Just like you said: there is nothing in my workflow that could slow it down even slightly, let the fans spin faster than idle, or drain the battery in less six hours. 13:08 Yes. Ram swap gets used quite extensively, I managed to push it up to 14 Gigabytes. However I'm simply unable to write more than 130gb just in ram swap to my hard drive in one day. With a lifespan of at least 600tbw for a high quality ssd with a capacity of 1tb I can expect at least 13 years of usage in the worst case scenario. Furthermore MaxTech's comparison between the 16gb- and 32gb-model shows that there aren't any noteworthy differences in speed. So I come to the same conclusion: instead of spending the eye-watering amount of money on the ram-upgrade, get yourself the biggest ssd possible!
@ChrisPieta
@ChrisPieta 2 жыл бұрын
Really glad you did the math on the hard drives there! Puts things into perspective for those complaning about the swap haha. Thanks for your comment

2 questions. #1 regarding the 1 TB storage, wouldn’t be more safe to work from an external SSD as opposed to working off the internal SSD therefore 512gb would be enough? #2 regarding the SD Card, I always thought it was best practice to connect your camera directly to the computer as it wasn’t good to take out the SD card in and out over & over again, no?
@ChrisPieta
@ChrisPieta 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's fair to say you're right on both points. For me, it's just less of a hassle to use internal storage and it's easy for me to just pop in the sd card. I have enough complexities in my biz and photography itself so I like to take the easy way when I can :)

Great review. Thanks. I want to get the 16" MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip configuration you recommend with the 16GB RAM, but I am torn between 512GB and 1TB of SSD storage. Any thoughts/recommendations you might have for me in this regard would be appreciated? I do not do gaming or video/music editing/creating. I am on the laptop, online long hours working from home during the week, and frequently though on and off evenings and weekends. Mostly basic stuff, online searching for research, streaming stock quotes/lists/charts, youtube (watching reviews and movies), multiple windows and multiple Chrome tabs open and running at the same time, multiple trading platforms downloaded to my desktop and up and running as well, emails (Likely to be Outlook), some chat and occasional Zoom, that sort of stuff. I save some pics, some jpegs I like that I find online. I usually watch movies online but have thought it might be nice to save some to my hard drive. I usually just bookmark youtube vids I like and watch online. Is the 512GB SSD storage likely to be enough, more than enough? I think I'm right about the 16GB RAM, but do you agree? Other? Thanks.

@@ChrisPieta Thank you. It's funny, I've narrowed my choice down to two lower spec'd highest end laptops, the Apple MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Pro chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage versus the Dell XPS 17 with the 11th gen i7 chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage (both RAM and SSD can be increased later easily if desired) but with the less expense better batter life FHP+ display option (Anti-glare, not Anti-reflective). Just being indecisive. Never used Apple os before but friends so it's great and I've watched a lot of youtube vids now that make it seem not only very good but not too difficult to learn. That bigger screen on the Dell is so tempting, but at best 10 hours of battery life, and with all my streaming and such not sure i'd get even that if out and about for hours at a time, and of course the Dell won't perform anywhere as well as the Apple on battery power. If I decide here real quick, I can pick up the Apple at store about 30 minutes away, today or tomorrow, and if I order the Dell it can be delivered within days. I'm just torn. Any further suggestion?

@@ChrisPieta Just thought I'd let you know, before you take any time to answer my follow up question, I made my decision. I chose and just purchased the new Apple MacBook Pro 16 with the new M1 Pro chip, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD storage, the slightly darker space gray color, and 1 year auto-renew Apple Care. What an awesome machine. I was comfortable that the 16GB RAM was more than enough, and though the 512GB SSD storage is likely more than enough, I opted for the 1TB SSD storage just to be sure, for maximum flexibility if my needs change going forward. And luckily, they had one in stock about 40 minutes away, so I ordered it over the phone with a very nice Apple support person named Victoria, and will pick it up tomorrow midday, no month plus weight for a delivery. Very excited, and thanks for your input, your review and reply.

So before I return the m1 ultra, I’m going to test it side by side with this 16gb ram m1pro model for the Lightroom and Adobe premiere work I do. 2,300 would feel great for boost in my workflow. I’m coming from 2017 iMac and 2018mbpro. I plan to sell the m1pro mb when the m2 pro comes out next year and I’m guessing I’ll be able to get at least $2000 for it. Anyways with amazons returns I plan to test the m1pro 16gb alongside the m1 ultra to see if it similarly fast for the things I do! And I can return both if I need to.

Well, I’m about to upgrade from a 2015 macbook Air with upgraded i7 but ONLY 8gb of ram and a 128gb ssd. I’m using that laptop quite heavily, almost as far as you can push it ;). With After Effects, Premiere and Photoshop open at the same time including some browsing, it’s almost writing 12gb’s swap to the ssd. I can tell you, I never encountered ANY problems with my ssd until now after more than 6 years of heavily using it, so I don’t think wear of the ssd in a new m1 pro macbook will be a problem since that ssd is newer and better as well.

I'm thinking of buying the base model of the 14" M1 Pro, which right now costs €1,992 on Amazon, because if I maximize this model with 1Tb (which I really don't need, because I use an external SSD) and 32Gb of RAM, it would go up from Price up to €3,200. Do you think the base model would serve me for 3/4 years or is it worth the investment to maximize it? Mostly I would use Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma and Safari with multiple tabs on a daily basis, and occasionally edit photos in Capture One and videos in Final Cut or Premiere. Thanks again!
@ChrisPieta
@ChrisPieta Жыл бұрын
The base sounds good but it depends how much you care bout internal ssd. Some people just want an all in one machine, others have external drives and such so the actual machine isn't as important. The m1 pro chip will serve you well. At the end of the day it's up to you whether you're fine with carrying around an external drive. I think a 32gb ram model will last you 4+ years. Drive space is up to you
@guillermocastaneda

@@ChrisPieta Thanks for the quick reply! The internal storage doesn't bother me, as I would only use it for the OS and programs, since I use external SSD to work with the files of different programs. Regarding memory, I know colleagues who work perfectly even with the Air M1 with 16Gb of RAM, that's why I'm considering the 14" base model today, and in 3/4 years I'll see how everything has evolved. Above all, because right now I can buy that model on Amazon for €1,992, and instead if I increase the storage and RAM, it would cost me approximately €3,200. Thanks again!

Thanks for the review! I am having an issue with my m1Pro 16 inch and wanted to ask if you see the same thing on yours. It feels as if the edges of the screen have a light roll-off like a vignette. It seems like the viewing angle of this screen is really small. If you look straight at the edge of the screen it becomes less apparent, but at the same time the opposite edge seems more problematic. I checked it next to the previous model (2019 16 inch) and the old one has no such problem. Thanks a lot!

@pdelinikolas
@pdelinikolas 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisPieta Generally it shouldn't have. But the viewing angle in these models is smaller than the actual screen size. So if you are working in full screen with a picture of the sky, you can't differentiate between a vingette in the actual photograph and the one produced by the shallow viewing angle. If you look at it from a standard center position, the edges are different than if you look look at them straight ahead. But my main issue is that it is tiring and distracting in casual use as well. After using it for reading, internet etc for two weeks now, I noticed that even though the screen is really bright, this effect makes me want to adjust the brightness upwards all the time. When working on white/bright backgrounds, the feel is like there is a barrel distortion on the whole screen. Maybe it is something that you can eventually get used to, but then you might not see problems that are in your pictures and think that they are part of the screen's representation.

Hi Chris, Hope You are Safe and Well. Thanks for the informative video! I’ve been using an Early 2011 15 in MacBook Pro (that will be 11 Years old this Month). I had put in 16 GB RAM/a 500 GB SSD in 2017. Since January, there have been many issues. I make KZfaq videos, which are mostly on Travel/Lifestyle. I will be making all newer videos in 1920x1080 60fps (progressive), and may try 4K in the Future. I will not be color grading, I will be shooting on automatic modes, and will be using Final Cut Pro. I will mostly be uploading at least 4-5 Videos or so a Week (I have lots of pending videos for my channel as well). I have been confused about the best MacBook computer to get. It seems like the 16 in M1 Pro MacBook Pro would be best for me, with 1 TB SSD Storage. I would like the laptop to last me at least 10 or more Years. Would 16 GB Unified Memory be enough, or should I go with 32 GB? If I go with the 32 GB, paying $180 or so extra could allow me to get the base M1 Max. To me, it seems the M1 Max would be too much unused Power, so saving the $180 makes more sense. I just want this to last very Long, since upgrades will not be possible. I would really appreciate Your advice. All the Best! Thanking You, Pawan

Thanks for this video. I'm a little late to the party and have just purchased the 16 inch M1 Pro with 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD which is due to arrive tomorrow. I know, new MacBook Pro's with M2 chips are likely just around the corner. However, I was able to pick one up for just under £2,200 compared with £2,599 list price. I spent around £3,500 in 2018 on a MacBook Pro (2018) 15 inch with i9 processor, 32gb RAM, 1TB SSD and upgraded Radeon Pro 560X 4GB. The value of this laptop was one of the worst, and I absolutely regret the purchase for many reasons already widely published. It simply isn't able to handle Lightroom and Premiere Pro. Most of my time was spent waiting rather than being productive. Seeing the M1 Pro chip deliver a vast increase in performance, or, in my case even just usability is worth the change. When the M2 Pro chips are announced, my 2018 laptop will drop even further in value so I think the current timing to get an M1 Pro at the reduced price combined with selling my 2018 model for more than it'll be worth in even just a month or two is a value upgrade. Especially now that I don't need to spend another £3,500 to benefit from a level of performance needed to edit photos and videos. 2016 to 2020 has been a very embarrassing time for MacBook Pro's. I regret being part of it, but moving forward, I believe the Apple silicone chips will not only give us what we should have had in the previous generations, but also push the competition to up their game now that Apple has joined the party. That can only be good for us as consumers.

Your review is really good but I disagree with the 16 gb of RAM being enough. I think if you're using your laptop as an investment in terms of making money, you should spend a little more for the 32 gb. Time is money and even though it may be good now because the hardware is new, there's also hardware degradation. So I would say it's safe to say 32 gb reaches the sweet mark. Also, that extra 16gb of RAM gives you that peace of mind that you should have spent extra for that memory especially if you plan on keeping this laptop 5-10 years.

I agree. I’m on M1 and run into a lot of slow downs on 16gb especially with longer heavier edit sessions. Lightroom just eats through RAM hard.

Know what I disagree with? Spending extra on something you won't need when in reality, in a few years, something newer will come out and if you have to, you can buy that.
