Thanks for this video! Exactly spot on what I was looking for. Most of these hubs I've seen don't have all these features at this price point (Both M.2 and SATA internals as well as the improved USB speeds, and card readers!)The fact is can take external power is actually the cherry on top- looking at these most don't have that option. I had the Mini crap out on me complaining about USB power when I hook it up to USB monitors (speakers) and a Scarlett 2i2 USB interface on a USB switch box. (That I use with 3 other computers). When switched to the Mini it would switch off citing a power issue. When used with a powered USB hub, it works just fine. So this being powered IS a want for some setups. I just ordered this, I think it will solve all my storage issues. Honestly, this seems absolutely mandatory for M1 Mini owners like myself, using apps like Logic Pro and multitrack projects on an external drive. My older Intel Macs used to handle this no problem, and with all the hype of the M1 I was shocked to find it has USB speed and power issues. The bump in performance of the T5 drive (exactly what I'm using) should be plenty to overcome the hiccups. An M.2 of 1TB or larger is icing on the cake! Anyway, thank you! This is a great value!

I bought the OWC tbolt3 hub which is about 3x the price but use my 2 tb WD Passport on one of the M1 Minis precious Tbolt ports believing it would be faster than on the powered OWC hub. I’m still on Big Sur, but this information is highly suggestive that I might even gain speed by moving it. I also have a WD mine drive in a case that I use on my M1 iPad. Put it this way: both are fast enough! 😛

Looks like a nice addition for any recent Mac mini, and the price is ok, given its features. For a relatively unknown company, I would have expected a price more in the $50-$60 range, but if it’s durable, $80 isn’t outrageous.

Thanks for the fascinating testing and reporting! It's obviously some weird interplay of drivers and firmware. All it confirms is that USB is becoming even more of a bag of hurt than HDMI - which is pretty depressing :(

I have a Samsung QVO 4TB SSD in a caddy connected to my M1 MBP and sometimes, on a sunny day if the computer feels like being nice, it will connect at 10 GBPs but more often than not, 5. Sometimes turning the cable around helps, and it really shouldn’t, so I think it’s just a fluke. As I use the drive to load in rather large sample libraries, I might be picking up this hub, so thanks for making this video. This 5Gbps lark is really irritating for what I do. I know it’s a niche thing, so probably most won’t care but it is honestly quite annoying. I wish it was more consistent.

Video shows hub at $99 normally - but since then they've raised the retail to $129, effectively wiping out the discount code. At that price, a thunderbolt3 external enclosure becomes viable.

Clear, concise video as always! My theory is that the hub features some USB controller circuitry that - when paired with the T5 - is more compatible than the Mac’s own controller...which helps to smooth out the kinks. By the way, is it possible to max-out the theoretical 10gbit throughput by copying from both SSDs and the T5 simultaneously?

I got much faster speeds when I put the Qwiizlab hub on an M2 Mac Mini (1TB NVME, 24GB ram. 10GB Lan). Even though the Qwiizlab is not thunderbolt 4 I used a thunderbolt cable as the supplied cable seemed unreliable. I installed a 2TB WD black NVME and an 8TB Samsung 870 QVO SSD into the Qwiizlab. With the NVME I have sequential read speeds of between 960-1050 MB/s and write speeds between 980 and 1100 MB/s. With the SSD I get sequential read speeds of 400 to 450 MB/s and write speeds of 440 to 480 MB/s. For comparison the internal 1TB NVME scores in the 3200 MB/s neighborhood for both read and write. (I understand the smaller NVME sticks Apple provides are much slower, especially the 256GB base model.) When I connect the Qwiizlab to a fast PC using the same type of storage formatted as NTFS, I get speeds about 20% faster then I do from the Mac Mini. If you are having problems with the Qwiizlab, upgrade the cable and always use power. Notice that I have had no problems with an 8TB SSD. Using the Mac Mini 10GB network adapter I get sequential read/write to a RAID 6 QNAP NAS (12x20TB 7200 RPM Ironwolf Pro HDD) , also at 10GB reads at about the same speed as the Qwiizlab NVME and writes about the same speed as the Qwiizlab SSD.

Quite nice at the price, very useful with the internal drives which are a cheaper way to expand the M1 Macs, a good fit for the Mac mini (will it fit next model?), but I am fascinated that for such a large hub, it has so few ports, most not fast.

Would have been nice to see those ssd in a video editing / photo editing / music editing task as that is what most people are using this computer for.

I LOVE the fact you start by exposing your possible "conflict of interest" ! If only most people were doing such thing... This one looks to be the most interesting among the "Mac Mini sized hub with xDD enclosure" (a category that is surely growing !), given it also has M.2 slot. I've been waiting for such a thing ever since I stumbled on the first model (can't remember for sure if it was Satechi) by accident. I love this form factor, despite NOT having an M1 Mac MIni ! It would so beautifully help my good old 2012 Mini, and as well my astonishing base model M1 MacBook Air :-) Let's see if this might be the one (yes, I paused the video to write this !) :-)

I bought the Qwiizlab UH25 Pro hub basically because of this review, took about a month to arrive in Canada from China, and it worked for a couple of weeks, then the M.2 and SATA SSDs stopped working reliably. Get constant disconnection notices on my MAC. Contacted the vendor, and they advised to update the firmware. Did that and same result. Still disconnecting both drives. So they offered be a $20 refund, and case closed. Now I've got a $80 USB hub once their refund actually arrives, with no internal drives. Bit of a waste actually.

believe the sticky pads go in first mainly for HDD damper but I would assume holds ssd in firm aginst door as well

I've seen a number of reviews of a hub that's pretty identical looking to this one, but they all have a different company name attached to them. I'm guessing the same factory in China builds all of these, and there are a number of small companies that resell it.

I got the same interface from Qwiizlab. I am waiting for my M.2 drive. When I get it, I will run the disk speed tests on it and the SSD that I have in there as well. One other documentation disappointment is the lack of description of the LEDs on the front. There's a blue LED that seems to be power on, but there are 2 others, a green and a white one that just seem to blink...

I know there are chipset issues, but I would love to have this in USB-4

I got a base m1 to use as a terminal for remote work. The quiz lab hub allows some convenient expansion with a very small footprint. The m1 is replacing a 2008 cheese grater Mac.

I got the same result with my 2big dock. Usb-c on dock does not work but when I plug usb-c drive on the thunderbolt meant for daisy chaining it much faster than directly plugging in M1. @apple I am confused

I got the same HUB but can't seem to power my Crussial NVMe drive. Where do you connect the USBC cable? Directly to the M1 mini's USBC? or to an external power source?

My old MacBook 12 inch is broken regarding the hard drive, so I was thinking of putting a Samsung hard drive through it, the problem is all the cheaper dongles unless powered, don’t Support that many external demanding devices. In short, if you connect the hub to the MacBook, do you know if it’s a powered connection, will it power the MacBook as well as itself?

Hi, thanks for this review. I found a similar hub/dock on amazon, and there were some issues raised on the mounted SSD disappearing when waking the Mac mini from sleep mode and not being able to re-mount. Have you come across any issues like this?

Has anyone have issues with Bluetooth or WIFI with this hub? I know, some were having issues with Bluetooth drops out and slow wifi with other hubs, as the antenna is on the bottom of the Mac Mini.

I think the OS is throttling them. To prevent overheating and stressing the already small power supply..Why the speeds are faster. When you transfer between the two drives in the hub...I'm not sure about the Thunderbolt ports on the Mac Mini... As an External NVMe should be around 6gbs. Using OWC Envoy Pro SX says 2000 write speed. Then 2500 read. But says up to 2900 read and write... And you can boot Mac OS off them....

my guess: the usb hub's firmware has been altered in a way that tricks the latest monterey beta into using more of it the m1's potential.

i bought a hub and found some bottleneck issues; i added a 4tb hard drive by samsung and plugged a dvd drive to a usb port in the fron of the hub so this meant the computer read the information and then had to encode the file into a mp4 which did affect performance. though this was obvious i guess

I have found that when I run Blackmagic speed tests, often, but not always, the 1st time running it on a drive recently connected will lead to much poorer performance than subsequent tests that are run immediately after the 1st test. I wonder if the operating system is using some buffering techniques to cause this? So what I usually do is run the test 4 times, tossing out the 1st result and then taking an average of the three remaining tests, assuming that the last 3 tests are similar in performance. Do you take averages? Or one time tests?

Hi there!! Can you please clarify the difference between a Thunderbolt 3 dock vs a version 4 type? I am hinting at OWC for instance. Beside the name changing , both should work the same with the M1.

I suppose that the hub/dock could work far better if it has a thunderbolt connection instead of a USB one, but it would make it more expensive.

I like the design of this product. The issue I have is that the SSD drive will disconnect itself at most inconvenient times. I using above spec cables and power supply. My computer is Mac Mini M2. Do you have any suggestions?

The drive is still considered as external right? My concern is the iCloud drive and OneDrive drive won't be installed on the removable drive.

Were the test run with the USB-C to usb-a power adapter plugged into the usb-a port on the Mac mini? I believe he said he was using it without the c2a power plugged in. Is there a difference when it is plugged in? Can it be plugged into the wall with an adapter/block? Would that make a difference?

Amazon shows the two usb-c plugging into the Mac. That may improve your results.

For M1 Users like myself, NVME hard drives when connected directly to your Mac, verify in System (top left apple System Information) and most times you’ll see the bandwidth up to 5gbps (USB3), sometimes 480 mbps (USB 2.0) but if you use any hub, it will connect to the maximum 10-20gbps (USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt) I guess it’s an Apple flaw

I'm curious to know if you added power to the dock/hub would it made a difference with read and write speeds?

Can you actually use external power to power the hub while it’s connected to the mac? A lot of Chinese made hubs have a port on the back that can provide power but it’s the same port that controls data to the mac so using an external supply is actually impossible.

I've come to the conclusion that a dock has the card reader and headphone stuff. Where as the hub is ports only.

After poking around apple forums. I believe the Realtek chipset in the hub is more compatible with the M1 and restoring lost performance

Sitting the Mac pro on top of this with TB to USB C adaptor. This should work right? Also would that additional USB C port also give me a USB C port on my Mac Pro? Finally I'm upgrading my internal SSD to an NVME soo. Would my existing Apple SSD 500 be compatible with this dock? The hub is a very interesting accessory. The internal NVMe drive thing is what caught my interest and I figured that could be a nice external drive for the rare occasions I take a Windows laptop on location. Do you think the hub would work on a Windows machine too? Another great video by the way!

So what is the power source if you wanted to power the hub 5 V couple milliamps?

I noticed the SATA KIOIXA drive doesn't connect to anything. It just sits in there. Therefore, how do you power it up? Wouldn't you have to use an internal SATA SSD drive? I don't think my T7 would work here. Sorry for my ignorance here. Help me out, please.

Hey, something off topic here, but I have a question, and I don’t know where else to ask it, couldn’t I just download the Windows for ARM file, create A gnu partition, similar to creating a new partition for macOS Monterey, put the ISO file in this partition, download all windows drivers, if they are not already included, and then, just reboot then choose the partition I’d like to use, similar to bootCamp, on M1? I’m not going to try it though, I’m afraid I might somehow break my drive, or my machine.

Why not place the docking station above the Mac mini instead of below it?

KZfaqr-"Kevys RC & Music" says that this hub should have an external power source with a 4 amp charger. Do you agree with that? He says an unpowered hub will fry the USB it connects to on the Mac.-Mini? Is that right? Other than that he did recommend it as long as it was powered, and NOT as Quiizlab says to hook power cable into the USB-A slot on the Mac-Mini. Please let me know if this is a better way to not fry the Mac-Mini USB slot, Thanks!

I find it a bit disappointing all that hassle with hubs and not really a good performance(it's just ok). I got some mini pc's around 400-600 $ which easily do 1500 to 3500 MB/S. I mean that hub is pretty nice. But i have a conscious feeling that apple is underperforming. Firstly you have to pay around 1000$ for a mac mini. Why do they take almost all ports off?? That is not logical from IT Minded vision.
