at 8:40 you mention using sata connectors. many have reported injection moulded sata connections as fire hazards due to the cables very slowly eroding the plastic and coming into contact. i don't think it is a good idea to say to people to buy possible fire hazards.

The risk you refer to is in drawing more power than the connector can safely handle, which can happen if you were to split a single power connector multiple times, or if you use SATA to power things it wasn’t designed for. Some people are trying to convert SATA power to 8-pin PCIe for GPUs, which would certainly be a fire risk. SATA connectors are not designed for that kind of power draw. The cable will get hot, potentially melting the insulation and presenting a risk of short. Normally, you’d expect the PSU to pop before that happens, but it’s certainly not an advisable approach. That’s not what I’m doing though. What I’m doing is running two drives from one connector. Running two HDDs or SSDs from one SATA power connector is very unlikely to cause issues. According to my calculations and taking into account the power ratings of the drives, the specs of the PSU, and the design specifications for SATA connectors, this is within design limits and doesn’t pose a risk.

I've had these speakers for a couple of years now; they were a good investment. I use them with my PC (wired) and Mac (Bluetooth) and using the remote to switch between the two inputs makes life easier. I agree that the remote seems to be very cheaply made and I have to look at the side of the speakers to make sure that the LED changes from Green to Blue (or vice versa) when changing inputs. Fortunately, they are on the desk so it's not too much of a peeve fot me.

This is absolutely perfect! I was just looking for a way to improve the sound of my TV, and also add a bluetooth streaming capability to the mix. I looked at a whole bunch of receivers and what-have-you, but this seems like a much more elegant solution for what I need. And on top of that, very reasonably priced as well. Thanks, Dave! Great timing!

Excellent video! The Surface manual recommends a Torx Plus 31P driver for removing the screw attaching the SSD disc to the Surface Pro. BUT 'Torx Plus' is different than the 'Torx' screwdriver you recommend (both screwdrivers have six stars but Torx Plus have slightly rounded-off star points). Notwithstanding your very clear video, I'm reluctant to take on this job myself without using the recommended Torx Plus 31P. I live in the UK and it seems impossible to find a Torx Plus 31P driver. I've found a company that sells the individual bit, but they don't sell the screwdriver handle in which to fit the bit. Could I buy a cheap generic screwdriver to hold the bit? The only thing I've found is a company selling on Amazon that includes a Torx Plus 31P driver as a 'Vessel Set of 5 Precision Torx Plus and Torx Screwdrivers' - but this is for £53! I'd be grateful if someone could link me to somewhere that I could buy this simple tool as a reasonable price. It seems people are simply using the T3 Torx Screwdriver (and mostly getting away with it?) rather than the recommended Torx Plus 31P drive, but someone on Reddit says this resulted in stripping the threads, which makes me nervous.

This is my experience, I am not saying one is better than the other for everyone. I chose to go with the iPad Pro and sell my MacBook Pro about 5 years ago. I’ve never looked back. For this list, I’m comparing the M4 iPad Pro 13 to the current MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro: Hardware: 1. Versatility - The ability to interact with the device in many ways. In “Laptop Mode” with the Magic Keyboard I can go from using my fingers, Pencil, trackpad/mouse, and keyboard all seamlessly. Or in “Clipboard Mode” with just the tablet and pencil/touch I can read, watch, draw/annotate, and show/demo something for someone. There are so many ways to hold/use the iPad vs the MacBook Pro. 2. Thinner and lighter, even with the Magic Keyboard . This is important to me as I’m constantly on the go. 3. I prefer FaceID over TouchID. For me it’s always worked more reliably and quickly. 4. OLED > Mini LED. Not a huge difference, but in the dark and in bright sunlight, the OLED sure is nice. 5. Camera on back for scanning documents, or snapping a quick environmental photo (can also do so more discreetly vs taking out your phone). 6. I’m not sure if this is true, but I’ve always felt like the iPad was a bit more durable than the MacBook. Software: 1. Simplicity - I don’t need more complex desktop apps or deep menus. Yes, the MacBook Pro generally has more feature rich software and capabilities, but I have found that those are overkill for me. I am able to run my business using Zoom, iWork apps, and web-based software. For my hobbies, I use GarageBand, LumaFusion, Lightroom, etc. I am able to do everything on the iPad Pro. I could do everything on the MacBook Pro too, but with an inferior interactive experience IMO. 2. Apps like GarageBand, Lightroom, DJ, Notes, FreeForm, LumaFusion, etc. are more enjoyable with the touch interface and Pencil support. Other apps like News and Books are more enjoyable to read while holding the iPad in tablet mode vs the MacBook. 3. Apps open and close instantly. It’s lightning fast to swipe and switch apps. I love being able to drag an app from the dock to quickly enter split screen. 4. I like the ability to alternate between simple multi-tasking (split screen and slide over) and Stage Manager when using my external monitor. 5. Slide Over is very handy (I always have Calculator, Contacts, ChatGPT, Notes sitting in Slide Over). I use the calculator a lot for work, so it’s great to be able to swipe from the right and do a calculation and then swipe it away. It’s also quicker/easier to tap the numbers on the calculator (touchscreen) on the iPad. 6. There are some native apps that don’t exist for the Mac that I use (Arlo, Insta, KZfaq, games, etc.) 7. The iPad and iPhone operate very much the same way and most of the apps are universal, so it’s easier to go back and forth between an iPhone and iPad than it is between an iPhone and a Mac IMO. GarageBand is a good example (you can pick up where you left off on the iPad and work on a song on the iPhone).

I have a 6 core 32gb ram which I open core legacy to ventura & it runs flawlessly imo, if you have the money to go m1-m3 id def go that route, but if not this is the most powerful mac computer you’ll run across eBay has these things for $300 you can swap out the cpu, ram, & go m2 ssd if you want.. I honestly don’t know why it gets the bad reviews that it does.. these KZfaqrs get paid to promote and endorse the latest greatest thing but this thing is a beast & thanks to open core legacy it lives on..

I doubt any KZfaqrs are being paid by Apple. Some of the larger channels get early access to review samples, but these have to be returned. The M chips have been a complete revolution in computing and have considerably revised our expectations of performance and power efficiency. Completely agree that these Mac Pros are still perfectly usable. It's never been able to shake the bad press it got at launch, because it wasn't suitable for a lot of professionals (who needed PCIe etc.). Ironically, the Mac Studio has been well received, despite being less upgradeable.

Apple can address this issue without disrupting iPadOS or compromising the consumer experience. However, they don't do so to avoid cannibalizing MacBook Air sales. The solution is straightforward: introduce a native virtual machine application capable of running macOS, installed directly from the Apple Store, with drivers specifically designed for the iPad Pro with a 13-inch display. This approach would address all security concerns by isolating the macOS VM from iPadOS. While Apple might argue that this would degrade battery life, such concerns can be managed with optimization and user awareness. I want to see anyone explain why this solution shouldn't work, considering the amount of power the iPad Pro has.

You hit the nail on the head when you talk about needing iPad to better manage files and multitasking. The iPad still kills apps in the background. And some apps simply don’t do multitasking (I’m looking at all of Google’s apps that will never let you open more than one instance in multitasking). What I’d just add to the files and multitasking wish list is further closing the capability gap between Mac and iPad apps - this isn’t all on Apple though (again, I’m looking at Google with poor iPad apps).

I wouldn't need macos. If they could have away to open it up a little to use real programs I would be fine with that. As a musician, the watered down versions of DAWs just don't cut it. I don't think putting two operating systems is the answer. The amount of space being used would make the base 256gb model useless. Two operating systems would easily chew up 100gb of space.

Great video thank you. My use case is some occasional home video editing up to 8k produced from the insta360 x4. Will the air on 16gb/512gb be enough you think? The air is a lot cheaper here in Australia. The apple staff said the air wont last as long as the pro because of the thermals?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 6 күн бұрын
If it’s occasional, basic editing, I can’t see why it wouldn’t last. How is that any different to playing games on it (which would probably heat it up more)? Certainly, the Pro and Max chips in the MacBook Pro are better suited to this work, but if it’s not your every day use case, the Air should be fine.

I currently have an iPad Pro 12.9” M2 2TB (16GB RAM) and before that I had the same model M1. I’m pretty new to Apple and I discovered really quickly that the only “pro” thing about iPad Pros is that they are good for sketching / drawing. That’s it. I was shocked to discover how locked down and closed off iPad Pros are, with us only recently being able to access certain levels of the mass storage directory structures… and even then, that’s pretty restricted. The amount and type of software that we can install is restricted to what Apple can take a cut of (no open source software for us). We cannot install a compiler or a virtual machine (despite having 16GB RAM in my case). When I bought my surface pro 9 platinum (32GB RAM), I was able to install Solidworks and 3ds max without any problems. I also now have all of my other favourite apps like Blender, paint dot net, visual studio, codelite, codeblocks, Visio, VirtualBox, KiCAD, matlab etc. I was initially disappointed at how restricted the iPad Pro is and then angry that I had spent so much money on something that is touted as a “pro” device but is actually just an expensive **toy**. I can do almost everything on my surface pro that I can do on my workstation, albeit with reduced screen real estate and less RAM (I have an HP Z series workstation, fully populated) but for doing something on-the-go - like making some changes to a design or roughing out a design just to get the idea down for work later at my desk, or experimenting with electronic circuits etc etc the Surface Pro actually **deserves** the “pro” moniker because it is designed such that professionals can use it to do what they need to do. The iPad doesn’t deserve the “pro” moniker at all. All it offers is a bigger screen and 16GB of RAM but even that is only on the 2TB SSD model… Apple didn’t relax any restrictions for pro users. They basically treat pro users the same as people who buy 10 inch iPads just to watch TikTok and play kwazy cupcake!! I genuinely think there is a serious disconnect inside Apple between their definition of “pro” and the rest of the world’s definition. Adding a bigger screen and some storage doesn’t make a device “pro” if you do not increase the capabilities - or at least relax some of the restrictions - of the operating system and software that can run on it. And as for that death-grip that Apple has over its Apple software store….yikes. For a company that tries to align itself with the rights of the individual, it really does seem to enjoy restricting the rights of the individual. Thank god the EU has held Apple over a barrel…perhaps we will see Apple actually give the “pro” iPads the ability to install macOS or at least something closer to a desktop operating system, given that…ya know…they now have similar processors to laptops 🙄 Surface pro for me. Sorry Apple but scam me once, shame on you. Not going to be scammed twice.

We all use our tablets in different ways. I am a proponent of maximizing the iPad)S to take advantage of the M-chips. To me, therefore no need to port MacOS onto the iPad. I think also that most other arguments are hung up on form factor arguments: laptop, 2-in-1 versus tablet, keyboard or touch screen. 5:14 i think the true multi-tasking is the reason. But what’s the difference between m chips on an ipad? Are its chip features turned off physically or just not available in Apple’s iPadOS plans?

. Lightroom to fix the photo issue? More money to Adobe, of course, and you've got to be in the good old cloud, but that's what I do. Then again, getting photos in and out of there is clunky. I'm currently back on an iPad only for portable computers, at least having dropped my beloved MacBook and broken the screen. That said, I can't even find the time to be without it (I'm running it clamshell) to get it fixed, and only having an iPad while that happens just sounds like a nightmare at the moment..so there's my two senses worth of first world problems
