Yes it goes back like a tank barrel . Helps with the recoil

The M2 operates on a principle called "short recoil." Short, because the barrel moves less distance than the length of the case, and recoil because the weapon uses recoil forces generated by the fired cartridge to cycle the mechanism. Basically, the bolt stays locked to the breech, and the barrel recoils backwards with the bolt until the bullet leaves the muzzle and operating pressures drop to safe levels. Properly timed, the bolt unlocks from the breech and continues rearward, extracting and ejecting the spent case, and recocking the firing mechanism as the barrel returns forward under spring pressure. Interestingly enough, the Barrett M82 uses a similar mechanism. The .50 BMG generates significant recoil forces, so it makes sense to use those forces to cycle an action.
