A few years ago a buddy of mine let me use his deuce for the weekend to haul the travel baseball team to a local tournament. The kids and the parents eyes lit up when I pulled in the parking lot to pick them up!!! Loaded all the kids in the troop seats, under the cargo cover and off we went. Made the turn into the baseball complex and all the games came to a stop. How could you not stop and look when you hear a straight pipe coming down the road? Pulled up to our field and a coach from a neighboring town team said "if a baseball team comes out of the back of that, I'm going to crap my pants". I looked over at him and said, "coach, get your toilet paper ready".

I'm very sure that none of these trucks actually had Studebaker engines in any of them at all.Studebaker only built gasoline deuces,not the engines,and when the deuce became a multi-fuel truck,Studebaker discontinued being one of the several subcontractors that actually manufactured them. The deuces that had gas engines in them only came from Reo or Continental,Reo made the OA-331 engines originally.The multi-fuel engine in the A1 & A2 was from Continental,Hercules,and White.Those engines were also naturally aspirated or turbocharged,that's it,if it had a turbo it was either the 1A,1B,1C,or 1D.The 1C or 3LC-19 was the one famous for being the "Whistler" because it gave that nice whistle to those trucks when you let off the throttle while bearing down the road.

20 years ago I saw 30 of these standing on reserve parking in Air Force Base I was serving, just sitting on sand under eucalyptus trees. The maintenance guy would start everyone of these trucks and drive forward and backward like 5 meters (like 20 feet) once a week. The guy would bring a paint bucket and would scrap off bad paint and paint with a freaking brush... We still got these in reserve duty. Every time there is a mess going on with reserve being called to duty, you can see these carrying army stuff, which happens too often here in Israel... Here we don't call these trucks deuce and a half, they are called Reo or Reos

During 1967 Reo became Diamond Reo because the company Reo and Diamond T merged into one.Up until the end of the Vietnam War,Diamond Reo was making these trucks,they even used the same grilles that Kaiser Jeep had themselves on the deuces that they only manufactured.I know everything on them is interchangeable,I use to own a few of them,but I'm merely referring to them from the factory untouched.There was several companies in general that built these.All the way until the M35A2-M756A2 was discontinued,it was only AM General and Kaiser Jeep.Before Reo was Diamond Reo,it was them and Studebaker too,but that was more towards when those trucks had gas engines,not the multi-fuel like the A1's & A2's only had.

Damn the old Vietnam era duces with the Hercules multi fuel wher slow and gutless but where tough as a nail and reliable as your favorite hammer could take all the abuse would run on anything flammable my personal experience is military diesel or kerosene and jet fuel works but the one they had the roughest time with and wore engines out quick was the 100 octane aviation fuel. Hit stuff but these old trucks had the best sound and I personally liked the non turbo trucks they smoke more then a coal train and sound like a old john deer 4230 and that cooling fan hum atwot on the Governor is just fantastic. Boy I bet it was hell in Vietnam trying to be stealthy with these trucks. I read that's why they made a turbo model to stop alot if the smoke so the enemy dosent see you coming in a big smoke screen but if you dont hear this truck from miles and know what it is then your deaf and pretty dumb awesome trucks tho I had a m35a2 but sold it and have a 70 52a2 tractor witch is pointless it's so gutless you cant haul much and have ti be on flat ground or you will run out if power on a hill and stall and be 5mph in low. But classics always been my favorite military trucks besides the mid 80s military Chevy square body m1008 and m1028 dually with the gutless but still a great engine if you like GM or just automotive enthusiast. In the military and square body history 2 birds one chevy lol

@junkyardwizard9092
@junkyardwizard9092 2 жыл бұрын
About the weird shift pattern... it's because it is an updated/upgraded transmission, from a non overdrive transmission, converted to overdrive. The original Spicer 3052 transmission was used behind the gasoline powered M35 series trucks. It is a 5-speed with 5th gear being direct drive (1 to 1) When they upgraded the M35 series trucks with the multifuel (diesel) they wanted an overdrive transmission for it. The easiest and with the least expense, was to add/swap out the 4th gear (under driven) to an overdrive gear. So 4th gear now became O.D. 5th gear. So that turned the old 5th gear (direct drive * 1 to 1) into 4th gear. This new upgraded overdrive transmission became the Spicer 3053A. So now with the 3053A, 4th gear is direct drive and 5th gear is overdrive. If you drive a Multifuel, this is why there is such a jump from 3rd gear to 4th gear and it lugs going into 4th. It's really in reality skipping a gear (going from 3rd to 5th) in the old transmission. Anyway, I hope I was able to explain that clear enough with the odd shift pattern with the M35 multifuel series trucks

I have the same cup holders in my deuce! I see you like to use the first gear. It’s a hell of a long push to unhook that first and wander half a mile up to second! Lol. I have no idea why the granny gear is so far from the rest of the gears. I don’t think I’ve used it more than a handful of times because it is sooo low. That first was more or less for getting a load moving so it isn’t required to be used for most daily driving. If you ever feel like really getting some juice out of the old LD, you can safely turn the fuel all the way up (contrary to what others on forums will tell you). You won’t cook a piston unless you pull a long hill at full throttle under 1800 RPM. You may get a few spikes in your EGTs but nothing damaging unless you’re being very careless. I’ve been driving my truck fully fueled for 5 years now and it has been flawless. I’m able to accelerate up to 69 mph (on 46s) much faster that a deuce should be able to go. I’m able to drift (barely) in a gravel corner and I’m able to pass a car on the highway without much difficulty. No downshifting required. It’s amazing how much power the old Herc can make with a little more fuel.

Is this a great view of that weird shift pattern!!! 4th gear comes back right next to 3rd so when in 5th gear run in top speed a guy in the middle seat doesn't have the shifter between his legs or bouncing off his knees!!!

Great vid. 0:05 was that seatbelts? Hoping the kid learns to drive and maintain. Great truck for "date night" taking to A&W for a root beer, or to a drive-in movie (showing my age) with a couch or recliners in the bed, not having to worry about getting in an accident. OMG would be miserable in stop and go traffic.

Lol sounds like a faster and much more powerful 250 cummins Lol. That was in 40s to 60s rigs! Only little power and it was a real slow and loud engine. 60mph I believe they went. We got a 48 Kenworth with one at the job we pulled out and restored. We got a wrecker body we may install on it. This truck sounds like a old Cummins a lot. I think they have their own engines for em. But I do think some came with Cummins or Detroit 2 stroke diesels

Haha the looks are real! People are either pointing giving you the thumbs up or laughing their arses off. Doesn’t matter the vehicle I’ve been in Ferrets CMP’s Land Rovers Landcruisers. Little kids pointing and getting all excited are the best I used to be that little kid

Loud, but sounds nice :) Would love to have a go in one of those things. But to drive anything similar to the m35, i need a CDL which is pretty much unaffordable to me.

@bad dog Yes i do. European licence class C, vehicles with a maximum allowed weight of over 3500kg. Even for personal use. Not everyone lives in the same country ;) Strictly spoken not a CDL - you can get the C-class license without the commercial part, but it would be silly to not get the extra 'code 95' that allows you to drive such vehicles for commercial purposes. Only people who convert a city bus to an RV do that, i guess.
