I was a logistics clerk for the Marines in 1st Battalion, 11th Marines and I worked for the motor T guys. Those 5 ton trucks and dueses (humvee's too) would break down all the time. It was usually three things that would do it.., the alternator, the starter or the glow plugs. We were always short on our budget for parts, so the mechanics would go out on expeditions at night and "acquire" the parts they needed from the other battalions that were better funded than we were. 🤣 Ah, those were good days!

One of those trucks with a tank could be a handy vehicle to have around cero Gordo to haul water and maybe set up as a brush fire truck
@dustymojave
@dustymojave 4 ай бұрын
Cerro Gordo already has a 5 ton thanks to Alan's boss Dave Sparks. But another like E48 with a permanent water tank might be cool. But I expect Alan will have similar need for a water tanker. Brent uses portable water boxes in the bed of the all-purpose 5 ton that he has for hauling water up the mountain. Brent has the remains of I think a WW2 vintage GMC military truck up at CG. But that is FAR from being a viable vehicle. My wife and I went up to CG last October and that road really is a HELL of a climb. Maybe not as severe as Alan's smaller mountain, but several miles of it vs Alan's 1/2 mile.

I have been watching since the beginning and I have not figured much out. The castle must be for a future summer home since it is not accessible in the winter. What are all the square body trucks for? Why so many Deuces? With all the negative talk about them are they gaining value? It certainly does not look like there is any intention of selling anything so my only take is that he only wants to have them. Certainly an interesting place.

In the sixties, my friend Gary and I would play with our diecast trucks in a covered sand and gravel area his Dad had built. We would line them all up when we were done, stand like giants, and admire our collection. The crazy thing is I think Alan has more of a collection of actual trucks lined up, ready to come alive with fluids, batteries, and wizardry.

When I was in the military, drove duce and a halfs for many years. When I would drive them around the yard, I would sometimes put the transfer case in low. This would make it start moving easier and make it easier to steer in tight spaces. One thing to remember though is that you have to put it back in high range when you park so that the next driver won't be driving around in low range by mistake.

i wonder about possibly having a concrete slab set up there for storage. it would help possibly keep the landscape among all the vehicles and parts from washing away in floods, but might help lower ground contact rusting issues over long periods. but maybe also to help organize the space, it could have lot lines and space zones marked out for efficiency, and for organization. also, it might help keep the weeds from growing up in and among the vehicles as those are a fire hazard, and fire is one thing i know you would like to mitigate as much as possible eh. also, i agree with some others that you could use some sort of warehouse like building in the depot area, for protecting and maybe even securing (against theft) of historical vehicles and also components that could be easily carried off by the unscrupulous ones in the world with bad ideas over other peoples things. might be costly, but i know you have a budget that you work with for supply runs and such, and daily living needs. so it coudl be worked into the schedule for the next few years or piecemeal slabs as you go, if this a thing you want to do or might consider.

I put a many a mile in the 70"s on a Duce and a Half with a trailer. I hauled some stuff with them Multi Fuel Trucks. I burned JP4 in one plus Gas and a Mix of Oil and turned the exhaust stack Red Hot one night going down the Autobahn in Germany. I could split shift one start in Low Low go to through the gears to Third then grab the arm and pull it up on the transfer case to Third High and keep going. Never got one stuck ever. A gamma Goat yes, a 5 ton NO!. I used to Haul Tanks with a 10 Ton everywhere. Kinda fun.
