I did that shifter bushing fix about 3-4 years ago on mine... one of the best things I ever did! My bushings were completely gone as well, shifter flopped around, I really didn't notice how bad it had gotten...new bushings and was like driving a brand new truck again. Was a little more difficult getting the pins out with the tranny in the truck, through the access panel in the floor but still doable and suggest it to anyone with a sloppy shifter. CHEAP, simple, and SO worth it!!!

Thanks for the video. Just replaced my shift forks, and couldn't figure out why it didn't want to shift. Turns out the shifter was so sloppy that it didn't want to select a particular gear. Got my rebuild kit on the way.

How difficult is it to replace the shift forks in the top cover? is there a video out there that shows the proccess?

I did this same repair on my '88 Ford Four wheel drive F150 and it improved about ninety percent...The problem that remains is the 1st to second and second to third are fine, but when you go to fourth you have to move way over to the right and down, then fifth is fine and reverse is also way over and down...It seems like the system is divided, hold left for 1-2-3 and hold right for 4-5-R...Does anybody have any idea what causes this even with the tower kit in place?

I think stubby is hardened steel, side pins soft metal.

What about the springs that return the shifter to center in neutral? I have a sprt trac with the dsame transmission and mine are worn out.

Hey man, been lost in working on my 88 bronco with the M5R2 here and had a mechanic replace mine. Drove it for a few miles and the shifter knob is going all over the place. Would it be because of those two little bolts going into the side there?

is there anyway to 5th gears ratio? i would love to a taller 5th. 97 ranger 4.0 all the grears are perfect just 5th is way to short. i know i might as well do a rebuild but i really like this little truck. it just sucks on the high way.

My main hole of tranny, where stubby goes, is wallored out. Ordered rebuild kit last nite, it should resolve it.
