I suggest reading or watching Peter Zehan. I think k that's his name. Whoever wrote the book "America: the accidental superpower." He provides a MUCH stronger and more accurate description of why America is actually pretty well oriented for success. I think his take is a little overly optimistic as it doesn't fully appreciate just how deep our internal divisions go, but he actually does research. I started watching and reading his stuff bc, despite decades of casual armchair research, i had never known just HOW the US built the current world order. I had always believed it was the UN and NATO combined with the soft power out massive economy allows us. And of course, bc we were so well positioned at the end of the war we got to call the shots of half of Europe and in Japan. But it was mostly the Bretton Woods agreement that defined how the capitalistic West would operate. Everyone loves to hate the US; and we've done plenty to deserve that hate. For first time in History, much of the world was stable and at relative peace, while simultaneously given opportunities that were similarly unique in history. Namely, the right to vote. The ability to thrive even if they produced no food, as long as they had other goods or services to sell on the global market. International trade before the war was mostly limited to within groups of allies. And even then it was risky bc your enemies could sink your trade ships or steal your goods. The US built a system where it made more sense to follow the rules and join and prosper, as opposed to do your own thing and end up isolated and alone like N Korea. Sanctions. Bretton Woods made the dollar the international currency. We are well positioned for future bc we produce (almost) all we need in house and don't need to protect the world's oceans at great cost. And bc we have a sizable younger generation, unlike most of the West and unlike our rivals who are totally screwed. Also, we control the manufacturing of microprocessors by controlling the machines that make them and controlling their supply chain.

I think we're just in a very bad national emotional state right now thanks to the advent of the internet. We've always been in a position where we could come back, heck, we arent doing so bad now overall. There are issues of course, but its not like we'll collapse soviet style since, thankfully, we dismantled the physical american empire a long time ago. Peoples in the US arent going to suddenly pull apart like eastern europe did in the 90s. Political radicalization is only as strong as we let it be. I think our currently invigorated political climate will ensure no pulling apart at the seams happens.

@@jhonklan3794 I’m originally from rural west Texas and moved to San Antonio for university. I’d say the culture of the Protestant work ethic is worse in rural areas than in the cities. It was all about who owns what land and who works it and who is seen as a lazy worker but it’s cheap labor and the middle of nowhere so you can’t do much better, etc. Cities also have better access to social services, hamstrung as they may be in Texas. I think San Antonio was about as good as it gets, relatively laid back culture with cheap housing and good amenities, but I’ve heard the cheap housing has pretty much dried up in all but the most dangerous areas since COVID. I don’t mean that as a diss on Texas, I’m still a proud Texan to this day, but there’s plenty of good reasons I wanted to move my family and raise kids here instead of there. Wanting my kids to be able to afford the bare necessities like housing, healthcare, food, and education is probably the biggest one, and those things aren’t getting any cheaper back in the states. Plus Barcelona has year round perfect weather, great public transit with quiet safe streets for kids to play and grow up in, and basically has a constitutionally guaranteed right to nap time, lol.

Yeah I’m sure a tanking economy in Spain just amazing. But at least you don’t have the urgency to compete if no one around you is ambitious, right?

the only reason the the parts are assembled in china and manufactured in Europe is because US companies know it is cheaper to do produce their products abroad. The companies could all, with ease, decide china is no longer as profitable for the company and move to Vietnam, or even back to the States, (This is exactly what is happening for a lot of companies in China). And while the Dutch are particularly important when it comes to semiconductor production and machinery, in the States, all they have to do is throw billions of dollars at it and eventually someone can develop something to match or exceed the manufacturing capabilities of Europe.

Yeah, the "average" salary after tax he says is $60k is actually closer to $30k yearly. I don't know anyone that makes $60k after taxes; I might $64k before tax and after tax that's about $40k. Average US salaries are pretty closely aligned with western Europe.

America still has one of the highest median incomes in the world. In fact, there are only 4 countries that rank higher than the US. Americans are absolutely wealthier than most people around the world.

And another thing is that stats like this tend to ignore that Americans still have to pay for healthcare, education, prepare more money for retirement, etc. While it's already deducted from income in EU.

Because at least the children of immigrants in the USA do better because Americans are, on average, welcoming, accepting and inclusive. Children of immigrants in European countries are often treated with contempt, constant mild to moderate racism and called (in the case of Germany) guests. Why would they integrated when the people don't even try to be nice to them? How can they succeed economically when they're being kept out of the job market due to racism? Like he said, the American Dream is real for immigrants.

Also, wage doesn't mean jack shit when you don't compare it to the cost of living. As someone in IT I might earn double or tripple in the US. But in the EU I can buy a house in the city as a single, don't need to pay for a car, obviously hardly have to pay anything for health care and dentistry, I studied for free and don't have any student debt, and so on...

If you're working, your employer is required to give you health insurance, so no concern there. 95% of Americans have health insurance. The US is an insanely big country, and the vast majority of shootings are gang related and concentrated in certain areas. This could largely be solved by legalizing and regulating drugs, and probably wouldn't be solved by banning the lawful ownership of firearms. That being said, we could probably pass laws like raising the age of firearm purchase to 21.

As a German person living in Germany I can say we fucked up integration. And people who feel like they dont belong anywhere get frustrated. I have a good friends whose gf is turkish (not german turkish) and she says german-turks are disliked in turkey and she is shocked that so few of them are going to university even though its free… just sad

I would bet that Turkish immigrants to the US are disproportionately well-educated, while the Gastarbeiter in Germany were overwhelmingly physical workers.

As a turkish-german that is more so well educated, I do have to say that most of it is man made. There where invisible Glass ceilings (namely socio-economic) applied to make it as hard as possible for these people to integrate, suceed and develop well. It's a hard pill to swallow, and any other german that has something against Turkish-Germans will vehemently deny it. Poor, uneducated and perspectiveless people will get frustrated and eventually act out. And over generations, these result in poor behaviour. Given that most of the people came from rural areas and had poor education to begin with, it was "easy" to keep them at the lower end of the socio economic ladder for so long. There are exceptions though. But if you have money, you leave Germany.

I think by Utopia he just means "better", something which he does specify at the end of the video, saying that the USA will at least be a Protopia.

The first sentence here is a good point but the second has major "you will own nothing and be happy vibes." I.e. you will rent everything from the billionaires or the government... All that does is centralize money, power and control far more than it is now.
