What are courtesy names? When would you use them?

@@codybonds Courtesy names are basically the names when people call you or refer you in respect, or the "decent way" to call a person. Actually, they were used just like our names today. So in another word, how would you use them? In every situation. Names are given by parents when one is born. And courtesy names are given by themselves when they become adults. And since then, one's courtesy name is considered as official and respectful. If somebody's name is Tom Randy, and his courtesy name is Thomas Randy, it's considered respectful to call him Thomas Randy. Only his family, probably best friends and superior officers would call him Tom. But in historical records, authors sometimes referred people in their names, like Tom. But it was just to make it look objective. Another interesting thing is, courtesy names are usually an extension in explanation of their names. Cao Cao. 曹操, first Cao is surname, second Cao means moral or virtue. 曹孟德, Cao MengDe, Meng means (probably) Meng Zi, a famous thinker with good virtue just like Confucius. De means moral or virtue. Just give you a little more examples. You can see how the names and courtesy names were related. Arrows mean their meanings, "&" means the separation between 2 different characters. Guan Yu -> feathers/wings. Guan YunChang. -> cloud & long/far Zhao Yun -> cloud. Zhao ZiLong -> dragon (yes, back then dragons were not exclusive for emperors) Sun Ce -> strategy/tactics. Sun BoFu -> first born & military power (Fu means a symbol or seal which was required to move an army) Sun Quan -> power/tactics. Sun ZhongMou -> second born & political power/tactics Zhou Yu -> Jade. Zhou GongJin -> justice/fairness & Jade Zhuge Liang -> bright/light. Zhuge KongMing -> bright/light Lu Bu -> enlightenment (here means spreading the good). Lu FengXian -> honoring & ancestry

So only his family would have called him Cao Cao everyone else would have said Cao Mengde. And my not referring to him as such in this video would have been seen as offensive? Should I refer to them by these names in future videos? And is it Cao Mengde or just Mengde?

@@codybonds its okay either to use their real name or just the one that people already know. Maybe the original devs of rotk wants simpler method on how to read the heroes name so that the game can also be played outside their original region and more appealing towards western audience.

i am really into the history but theres just points in time where everything was a cluster fuck, warlords everywhere and multiple uprisings in various regions.

There are scholars who spend their entire lives studying this period who still have many questions about this time. Frankly it’s a minor miracle we know as much as we do now. Interesting times make record keeping a very low priority compared to not getting killed, starving, or using scrolls for kindling.

@@jonsmith5626 I wouldnt say that song army is incompetent though it literlly held the Mongols for 40 years much longer than any other places being conquest. Its just the central were so corrupted and the army were controlled by civil officials the whole army is basically feeling powerless and low morale

@@jonsmith5626 true... Jin Dynasty was my favorite among the 3 because they are straight up badass until the end. But Yue Fei is my favorite guy, dying tragically after reconquering his homeland that he longed for so many years.

@@kokodoko8036 Pang De's legend status is pretty much him having the balls to challenge Guan Yu at the Fancheng campaign, but that went South really quick for him and he was captured and executed by Guan Yu.

I believe you are thinking of Gongsun Zan, Gongsun Zan is the white horse general.

Any of them. He appears as a recruitable character during the game.

Ma is one of the most common family name for Chinese.. two of the most richest men in China have the family name "Ma" - the founder of Tencent : "Ma Hua Teng": (biggest gaming compnay in the world) - the founder of Alibaba: : "Ma Yun": (chinese version of paypal and ebay) also previous president of Taiwan is called "Ma Ying Jiu"

MA had many branches from different origins, today some people from Chengdu region with surname Ma could possibility be descemdants of Ma Teng's clan since Ma Chao and Ma Dai'd sons all lived in Chengdu. Liang Province which is today's Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and northern part of Shaanxi is now largely occupied by Hui Muslims, coincidentally many of them also adopted the surmame MA, the Islamic Ma clique was pretty active militarily in ww 2 and also the subsequent Chiang - Mao civil war.
