In the novel, the idea behind capturing Meng Huo 7 times and letting him go was to make full use of Meng Huo's status as the Nanman "leader". As long as the Nanman tribes didn't replace him, dealing with the Nanman was much easier. After all, dealing with an idiot you know is a lot easier than dealing with a duplicitous jackass, which was why the Gao Ding guy was sent north into a death trap against Wei forces. I don't think the guy "Meng Huo" actually exists. I personally think that the name "Meng Huo" is actually derived from "alliance leader" and just abused as a name for someone who most likely existed but was not called by his actual name. 盟 = alliance (pronounced as "meng" in Mandarin) 王 = king (pronounced as "wang" in Mandarin) In other Chinese languages, the word 'king' is pronounced similarly to "Huo" so I wouldn't be surprised if the novelist took the name from that misinterpretation. In actual history, I wouldn't be surprised if Zhuge Liang actually captured 7 different alliance leaders in succession during his Nanman campaign because he is acutely aware of the importance of removing leadership from enemy forces. I don't know why the novelist chose 7 encounters but if that is to be believed, that probably means that there were 7 critical engagements that broke the Nanman's resistance.

I read something similar when creating this, but your explanation is much clearer and I generally agree with it. If that is how his name translates, then it is very unlikely it is what he would have called himself.

@@codybonds Considering that we are dealing with the Nanman, my guess is that it has to do with one of the Hmong-Mien dialects that are related to the Southeast Asian languages like Vietnamese and Laos. Interestingly enough, if you hit up Google Translate and translate between English and Vietnamese for the word 'king', the Vietnamese pronunciation of the word 'king' is very similar to the "Huo" in Meng Huo's name.

@hentaioverwhelming
@hentaioverwhelming 3 жыл бұрын
@@koiffun3570 My guess is that Chen Shou's Records of the Three Kingdoms didn't mention Meng Huo by name probably because the Nanman uprising wasn't centralized around any singular figure nor did the uprising succeed beyond a certain length of time. The reality of the matter was that the Nanman uprising was a complete distraction to Zhuge Liang's objectives but Zhuge Liang still had to personally deal with the problem because no one else would be able to pacify the problem as adeptly as he could. Zhuge Liang has very experienced generals under his command but generals aren't necessarily expert civil administrators and the division of civil and military duties has been around for about a millennia by that time.

@@codybonds It is a novel written in the 14th century about events that happened well over a thousand years ago. Not helping matters is the constant redistricting/renaming of counties and provinces as well as changes to the national border. In 14th century China, Yunnan province was as Chinese as any other province so writing about your in-house neighbors being descended from barbarians was kind of a touchy subject, especially if those neighbors happen to have people in high imperial court positions. This is kind of why the novelist completely glossed over Ma Teng's heritage.

Also, I would like to point out that Shi Xie (who was indeed still alive at this point) did play a role in diplomatically convincing Yong Kai that switching sides was a good idea. Mainly by bribing him. A lot. Because it turns out, 30+ years of relatively stable and peaceful rule of your province while everyone else is fighting up north leaves you very very rich. @@codybonds To be fair, no one remembers any of the Shi family, because they didn't really, well, do anything during their stay in power in Jiao province (187-228) except run it as nominal Han governors. Which, when you have 7 commandery large province that has neighbors like the Nanman to the West, some of the Yue to East, warlords like Liu Biao and Liu Bei to the North, and Baiyue/Nanyue to the South, not getting involved in any large scale conflicts for 40 decades is honestly an impressive achievement in and of itself. Hell, the fact that he didn't face much in the way of rebellions from the ancestors of modern Northern Vietnam, and is still venerated in some areas of Vietnam to this day is probably a testament to the diplomatic and administrative skills Shi Xie possessed. Not many warlords of the 3 Kingdoms era can say that they died of old age (at 89 he was freaking ancient). But no, Creative Assembly just decided to make him all about nepotism and collecting family members. Didn't even touch the fact that he encouraged Buddhism, and arguably should have a Buddhist Temple as his unique building.

@@Rukdug I would argue that this is because the novelist is a hardcore Confucian adherent. Appointing competent relatives to important positions has been normal in every Chinese kingdom for well over a millennia by the novelist's time (from Spring & Autumn/Warring States Period to the Ming Dynasty) regardless of whether they are members of the imperial family or not. Confucian adherents only approve nepotism from the ruling imperial family. It is that absurd.

Militarily, Zhuge Liang is exaggerated, but honestly, his administrative skill is honestly astounding. His first job, actually, was tax collector colonel. Consider that Shu Han was the smallest state of the three kingdoms, the absolute poorest, and had just suffered a massive defeat. I mean, Chengdu region had a million people, vs the two capitals at at least 10 million. Even if Shu Han pooled it’s population together, it was pretty much less than a quarter of Wei’s population. And YET. Zhuge Liang managed to not only hold the country together, but field an army of 100,000, stay continuously on the offensive against the largest state of Wei over dozens of miles of mountain range, and did this for years.

@@brokensky2378 Logistically and Administratively, the man was definitely a genius. It's just that his strategy was always more iffy than people realize. In smaller local conflicts like Nanzhong, he knew how to minimize losses for rather long term victories. @@Rukdug His original successor was supposed to be Ma Su. Liu Bei disapproved of Ma Su being in that high of command and considered Ma Su okay for mid-level command/administration. Needless to say, after Liu Bei died, Ma Su screwed up royally in one of Zhuge Liang's early campaigns against Wei. Zhuge Liang actually poached Jiang Wei from Wei and since most of the veteran generals were already senior citizens, Jiang Wei was kind of the only decent kid that he could pass the torch to even though Zhuge Liang has his own son (who was most likely not of age yet). Meng Huo was more likely either half Nanman or was culturally accustomed to them rather than being born as one. In that respect he was probably similar to Dong Zhou in that he was a Han official who was well liked and respected by the local tribes (Dong Zhou spent a lot of time with the Qiang people and even married a chieftain's daughter) and was even elected to be their leader. While Zhuge Liang's capturing him seven times was certainly fake, it may have been a fabrication of Shu forces winning seven major victories in their Southern Campaign before their enemies finally surrendered and were brought back into the fold.

We are not that much tanner lmao. I would say in between Filipino and malay definitely not as dark as Filipino or Indonesian. Unless it’s summer you can’t see a difference. One thing that’s cool and not noted is most nanman descendants have dark brownish reddish hair

i am a migrate south china chinese my grandparents and parents always remind me that the northern china are badjazz people, so rude and don't respect the native culture, the northern vietnam or another named for south china ( is a very confusing place to lived on because we living in the border and no peace is found in there) until today south china and north china behave very different and stereotypes each other much, we south chinese don't like the northern chinese is because they are so called themselves too civilization yet disrespect toward nature, that is why we southern chinese love to migrate for a very good reason why, that is why Southern Chinese are friendly with the Westerner and other part of the world, what we want is peace and adaptation and respect, our ancestor had suffered war, but now we prefer be friends with outside from China. You see today China economy boom like a thunderstorm is actually from Northern China power.... earth will be doom soon, gangs.... this is not your friendly average Southern Chinese that speak in Cantonese and learned to respect your culture and religion. we migrate chinese find these northern chinese is so disrespect toward with different race and culture, and religion. they want to make southern chinese a name shame for money reason...look at Hong Kong for example, it is ruin....to good named to be ruin....

Calling our Hmong ancestor Nanman is racist because our oral tradition never have anything to do with riding elephants, doing black magic with worms and bugs, and tattoo our foreheads and eat raw fish. 8:50 none of my ancestor want to be surrounded by hot swamp, mosquito bites. We will run away. We rather let the Chinese keep the swampy heat.
