I borrowed an X-H1 + 16-55mm last weekend and was very impressed, although it's quite bulky when compared to something like the full-frame A7 III. Your very comprehensive review taught me a few things that I had overlooked in the rather complicated menu system (thanks!) but I discovered a curious feature that wasn't mentioned here - that the metering dial is rendered ineffective unless Face/Eye Detection is set to Off! It took me a while to figure out why spot, centre-weighted, average and matrix metering gave me exactly the same exposure even in heavy contrast situations.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words - and my apologies. Fuji has always done this - that face detect over-rides the photometry setting - that I overlooked mentioning it. It's particularly troubling when the meter mode is set on a physical dial. The dial should have a face detect setting, and I should have mentioned that.
@jansun9995 жыл бұрын
Agree, this is confusing for non-Fuji shooters. I do, however, understand the rationale behind it - expose the face correctly since that's what you're focusing on - makes kinda sense when you think about it....

About 10 years ago I watched a million videos on The X-T1 (and some other cameras) yours was the only video I came across that offered the full gamut features and capabilities of the X-T1 - no need to supplement your information with other videos. Now I'm looking at the X-H1 and after a dozen videos I have been struggling to find out a few specifics relating to functionality. Less than 6 minutes into your video and I have what I'm looking for and more! (Still another 26 minutes to go!). I'll be revisiting this video a lot over the next few months 😄. Hi there, thank you for taking the time to create such a useful resource. I have just bought an X-H1 but have noticed a distinct change in shutter sound and volume when the camera is positioned in different orientations (with shutter sound set to off in the settings menu). When the lens is pointed towards the floor it is quiet, soft sounding with very little shutter shock. Sounds like “flua flua flua” When pointed horizontally in landscape orientation it is noticeably louder, les soft and with some shutter shock. Sounds like “chu chu chu” When pointed horizontally in portrait orientation it is loudest of all, with very noticeable shutter shock. Sounds like “Tchua Tchua Tchua”. This happens when shooting is only started once re-orientated, or continuously through out making the three orientation changes. The camera also seems to create a more discernible clunk during start up and switch off. The IBIS I assume. I’m concerned that these issues (assuming they aren’t inherently part of every X-H1) are to do with problems with either the IBIS or shutter damping springs. Have you experienced or heard of this? Do you have any advice? Thank you Andrew P.s. for context: only the horiz portrait is as loud, and hard as my recently sold X-T30. Lens pointed down is louder than X-100V but v quiet.
@MaartenHeilbron2 жыл бұрын
I assume you're using the mechanical shutter (the electronic is fully silent) and that the camera is new. If it's used, maybe a service appointment is in order. In my experience, the X-H1 has a very quiet shutter. Yes, there is a slightly different shutter sound in portrait and landscape. The startup clunk is the stabilization motor engaging the lens - that is somewhat lens dependent. The sound I find more troubling is the movement of internal elements in the lens when the camera is off, but I've been assured that's normal. Hope this helps.
@ndrwdnhm2 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you Maarten. Yes MS, and yes it’s new, so I called Fuji support. They said that it’s within range of what they would consider to be normal, and that it’s just a function of the different spring tensions in the shutter dampening mechanism. I’m going to monitor it over the next few days to record any changes. Fingers crossed it settles down a bit. Thanks again

Hello Maarten.. a little hint: if you add "00:00 intro" string to the first line of video timeline in the description you'll see the listed sections also on the video play bar, it makes easier to scroll through the video section on the horizontal bar ;) without the starting time KZfaq doesn't show this feature. "intro" or "start", or whatever you want can be written, the important is the 00:00 time mark....btw you have to add it to every description to make it works (if You want). That's what I did on most of my videos.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын

Hey Maarten - I enjoyed your review. Unfortunatelly you forgot to mention the old FAT32 file system in the XH1. This means that only video files with a length of about 2 minutes can be stored. Then a new file is created. And you have to put these files together in post production to a full video. This issue holds me back to buy the XH1 for video usage.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
You are imaging this as an issue - it's not. You just assemble the files on your timeline and they match seamlessly. My videos (and I've produced many videos with the X-H1) are full of just those kinds of "edits' between files. Honestly - don't worry about this. However, as SDXC does support larger files, it would be nice if Fuji (like Sony) used the advantages. But I really don't see this as an issue.

I´ve tried it and for me - and for many other well known YTers like Max Yuryev - its an issue.

Nice review! I have an X-T2 but have always admired the X-H1 for the additional IBIS, especially as I like to adaptor mount my excellent Pentax lens collection. Their Limited range lenses are incredible, and Pentax pioneered in-body stabilisation, so theirs was never in-lens, making them cheaper, more reliable and nicely compact. The bonus for me is that since watching your video I've discovered the same focus bracketing you demonstrated on the X-H1 is also included on my X-T2. I didn't know it was there before, so I'm overjoyed! Thanks for the heads-up :-)

Hello again Maarten. I've finally bought X-H1, with patience I got maybe the best deal.. with the new 300€ instant rebate final price for the x-h1 with Vertical Booster and 2 add. batteries was 850€! No brainer frankly, can't find any better for the price. I find this camera great, solid but maybe a bit lighter feeling (which wasn't so lovely, compared to PRO Dslr, heavy brick sensation on them) but easy to use and now working on settings. I've also bought the TT350F flash for cheap and seems to be fine for "amateur" shooting. There is only one thing I can't live with at the momento: AUTO ISO!. I come from Nikon and was nice, set the iso, enable or disable auto iso when you want. Now it's so bad you can't have the reading when using auto iso, it just show you the max iso value for that preset, and even if you disable "shutter ae" option you need to half press to get the readings. So bad! If i put Iso on command and use the front dial to select ISO I have to move entire iso range (tons of clicks) from 100 to 51200 if I want to go back again to the autoIso selection, no on-off dial like on my old Nikon. A huge drawback, have to use the top knob to set iso when autoIso is behaving bad . To me a really bad design, more options are welcome for Iso selection :/ on the other hand is a great camera, let's see the future Fuji's and I'm going now to get lenses before thinking of a body upgrade. ;)

Watt on earth would MIJ be a problem for people? (Nobody builds note consistently than the Japanese). Back in the 70s IBM asked a Japanese company to make them their computer chips, they told them "no more that 2 defective chips per 100,000". Several months later the chips arrived in a box at IBM, inside were all the chips plus two extra ones with a note that read: "Here are your 100,000 chips and the two defective ones you requested".

Yes, thanks, I'm sure nobody thinks made in Japan is a problem. However, if I don't say, then my viewers will ask - and when I say, it's always with the caveat that I'm sure the standards that Fujifilm (or whoever) uses are the same, regardless of the location of the plant. Some countries have had issues with shoddy manufacture, but it's typically a case of inexpensive products lacking quality control.

I recently purchased the X-H!1 and just now came across your wonderful video. As a Nikon shooter, it is still taking me some time to fully understand the way the X-H1 settings. In particular, I am used to having a PASM switch and normally shoot in manual mode with auto ISO, or in aperture priority mode also with auto ISO. I understand how to move to various modes, I think, by choosing which of the speed, aperture, and ISO controls on set to auto or in the case of speed T - as I like to choose the aperture and speed via command dials. In your video you show how the mode (PASM) is displayed on the screen. Unfortunately, I am not always able to see the mode displayed on the screen. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it is not, Clearly there is some setting that I am choosing to cause this information to disappear but I am not exactly sure which one. I would appreciate your help here as I have searched through X-H1 manual and cannot get a handle on this. Thanks.

Not sure why you need to see it, but it can be made to appear on the top info panel by using the screen customizations. The PASM display doesn't appear when the screen is set to large display.

Interesting video. I am a Nikon DSLR user (I have a D7000, D700 & D750) and have been for several years. I am very happy with what I am able to achieve with Nikon. But mirrorless seems to be the future. Most of the R&D budgets of the various camera manufacturers is being spent on developing mirrorless cameras. From what I can gather, the various built-in filters/profiles for shooting jpeg images only are a matter of opinion (IE Some people like them, others do not even use them). I shoot raw with my Nikon cameras. I imagine that I will do the same if I move to Fuji cameras. The big improvement seems to be in video. Some of the filters/profiles seem to create very good video footage. Also the autofocus in video seems to be much, much better than my Nikon D750 for example. Equally none of my Nikon cameras can shoot 4K. As you have said, the battery life on the X-H1 is limited. So I intend to follow your advice of buying the battery grip plus several extra batteries and chargers. On another note, I am interested to see you review the new Olympus OM-D E-M1X.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It's true that mirrorless cameras are much most hospitable to video production. Liveview is really just another word for mirrorless. However, even mirrorless cameras can have differing focus systems for stills and video. The most powerful and flexible colour management system is really Sony's picture profiles, but that requires significant work on your part to determine which are the best settings for you. Fujifilm's simulations make it simpler. The one drawback of Fuji's is the limited capability and range of the saturation and hue settings.

This camera everytime makes me thinkful. Somethink like sell D610 and G80, because it has everything I want: every physical dial (also for AF), top custom lcd, af joystick, IBIS, good firmware support during years and also seems to have good iso performance. It's a pro body, better than D610 and G80 I think, the only downside: no hi res EVF like on G9. It costs like G9 almost or a bit less, video is just secondary to me, why people preffer G9 as still camera? Image iQ i think is better on XH1 and also the hybrid autofocus (with phase). What do you think? I use D610 mainly for portraits, and G80 with adapted lens to get 600mm equivalent, animal headshot and a bit of wildlife. I use G80 for my 1080p/30 KZfaq video. How do I loose in terms of image quality compared to a D610? Expecially with bad light and ISO 3200-5000? Thanks XH1 with 16-55 2.8 seems a total great starting point camera, you can do everything from scratch, except for telephoto whihc need proper lens, but I can adapt FF one manually.

Sounds like you've identified a good solution. I don't think you'd lose any image quality - the pixel count is the same (although the sensor is smaller) You'd get 4K video, with excellent specs. If you anticipate low light, get a lens that can handle it.

Is it possible to define a self timer interval in the menu so that you have to press your allocated FN button for the self timer only once to activate the predefined timer? When I press the FN self timer button I have to select either 2 or 10 seconds and confirm that with another click each time. That's a bit annoying. On my Nikon I set the timer to 2 seconds in the menu, then I only have to press my FN button once and press the shutter relase button, voilà! Same with eye autofocus ... I want to press 1 button to activate a predefined eye focus mode and not press the button and scroll and to the desired eye focus mode and then press a button again :( That would be useful for several images in same mode but not for a single spontaneous photo ...

Maarten, thank u so much. Your videos are all so thorough and in depth. You are awesome! Can i ask u what external mike do u use? I’d like to get an external mic to use with my fujifilm xt2 and ive looked on youtube at different mics: rode, sennheisser, and audio technica... but im not sure which one to pick since different people say good things about all three companies. I would like to use it on the camera (and on a boom if the need arises). What mic do u use? And do u use the mic on the camera or on a boom? Thank u so much!!! Greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, it was a pleasure to read your kind words. As 99% of my videos feature me talking to camera, I use either the Voice Technologies VT 506 bhpho.to/2JQ4QQ4 lapel mic (connected directly via cable), or a Sennheiser Clip-Mic bhpho.to/2Fsm2JQ (recorded dual system to my iPhone) or a Rodelink wireless kit bhpho.to/2BHA7gT. An on-camera mic is better (but not much) than the internal mics and would recommend this primarily for ambient recording. The camera is rarely in the best position for audio - it's generally positioned for the image. If you are using a boom, either Rode or Sennheiser make good mics. You get what you pay for. Nice review, as always, Maarten. I have a question about video-specifically, the 40Mbps bit rate at 120fps. You said this made sense. I don't understand why. Why wouldn't it make sense to capture at 200Mbps? The camera has the capability to capture at this rate. The footage will be slowed down on playback so any IQ issues due to the lower data rate will be more obvious. What am I missing?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
If the recording rate is 200Mbits, then 5x slow playback would be 40Mbits, if I remember my high school math correctly.
@timothylinn6 жыл бұрын
Fair enough if you assume that 40Mbps refers to playback and not recording which...does make sense. :-)
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
That is the speed and the bitrate when you play the file, it's designed to play at 24 fps, not 120.

Great review, I really appreciate the time you put into this one. According to the specs H! has a high speed 120fps mode in FullHD, but it seems that you found only 60fps as maximum. Can you verify? I wonder how it compares to 5d mkiv in terms of video quality.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, in the standard video settings, 60 frames is the maximum. For high speed, you'll need to switch to the high speed mode - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbmAY5Sgvp6nm6c.htmlm57s

Thanks for your kind words. Use a tripod or a gimbal, to fully stabilize the camera.

@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks. That seems to be the only option. Also, is there a real difference in output between DCI 4k and UHD 4K? Is it just marketing gimmick? Feel free to ignore the question, of course, but I have been thinking a lot about the real difference between a full frame UHD like Panasonic S1 v DCI 4k APS-C like the X-H1. Thanks.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
@@abhijeetpaul5145 Actually, a smaller sensor has some advantage as fewer pixels need to be combined to create the 4K video image, unless of course the image is recorded from a very small area in the middle of the sensor. DCI or 17x9 can provide a look, which while it can be replicated from 16x9 recordings, is likely better quality in a native recording. The issue for me is, where are your viewers going to be watching your content? If it's on a 16x9 resolution screen which refreshes at 30 frames (or multiples of that) you are not doing your video any favours by shooting using a different frame rate or resolution. 17x9 will be downsampled to 16x9 (with letterboxing) and 24 frame will be interpolated to 30 frame.
@abhijeetpaul51454 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks again for the detailed note. My intended audience is film festival goers of shorts and features. And of course on platforms like YT and Vimeo. So a downscaled 4K to HD works for content dissemination especially for the latter.

Hello Maarten, here I am again :) I have a question about X-H1 and it's HDMI. I'm using a HDMI to Micro HDMI D Cable 3mt long, it works fine with my Lumix G80/85 even with 4K signal, but.. I tried with X-H1 where I can't get a clean output at all. If I left info display it always output signal over HDMi even in still mode, any resolution and settings with the OSD. But, if I enable the clean output, I can only get footage with 50 and 59.94 settings, on otherframerate the camera start goind crazy or just show a quick frame after 20 seconds. I've use TV, monitors, capture card, but can't get to work 24-25 and 30p, so 4K it's unusable considering there is no 50/60p. I read on the manual it's suggested to use cable no longer than 1.5mt but works at higher framerate and not at the lower ones, I don't think it's the cable or its lenght. Very strange, any suggetions from You? :)
@MaartenHeilbron3 жыл бұрын
That's very strange - maybe the camera needs service. All of those settings work fine for me. Which device are you using to display HDMI?

@@MaartenHeilbron I'm using a TV, a capture card and different solutions. The same cable works with G80 and 4K output, but the strange factor is that works perfectly fine at 50/60p, flawless on xh1. 🤔 Also by enabling the display info on hdmi it works on every mode, the problem occurs at at 24/25/30p on 1080/4K resolution with clean output, very strange, i don't think it's the port maybe the pal/Ntsc factor but I can't remember any option about it.

I just checked with firmware 2.11, in Movie mode (not stills) When 4K Movie output is 4K, and HDMI Output info display is on, all movie mode settings output 1080p59.94. When HDMI output display is off, the HDMI output mirrors the movie mode setting (frame rate and resolution) and the output switches as soon as it's selected. I'm using a recent 2m Amazon Basic HDMI to micro cable, and the Atomos Ninja Inferno.

The only thing that stopped me from getting the xh1 is the 8bit 4:2:0. Does the eterna cinematic setting takes care of the colour grading?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Only you can take care of colour grading. Eterna is one of several options to create an in-camera colour profile - it does provide a slightly wider dynamic range (as long as you use the DR 400 setting). The thing about 8 bit is that it's best to create your look in camera, as the 8 bit recording doesn't allow a lot of latitude for adjustment, and if you use a colour profile with low saturation it won't be possible to recover much of the original colour.
