Reviewing your review after about 8 months: the 4 gig limit has now been history for several months, and IBIS significantly improved. This is a killer camera---and lovely, lovely color---no real notable faults. Using 4K DCI with a speed booster you have almost the angle of view of the full frame camera, and the DCI of the A-PSC mode is great. I think you've got something much more cinematic than the A7III with the film simulations, plus the EVF and LCD are far superior, and the peaking feature is the best I know of, with the lone exceptions of the other Fuji cameras.

Borrowed it from a friend and within 2 days, sold the X-T3 and X-T30 and bought X-H1. Killer EVF, shutter mechanism, IBIS and Simulations. IBIS is miles ahead of Sony's. I shoot stills 90% of the time. Fuji doesn't make any bad lenses even their XC line is way better than Canon & Sony kit lenses. Their XF lenses are small, fast and reasonably priced compared other brands.

Fuji fanboy here. If you take photos even occasionally, nothing compares. I actually don't find Fuji lenses crazy expensive compared to Canon or Nikon, or certainly Sony. They make a wonderful 35mm f2 that costs 450$. They also have a fantastic 18-55mm kit lens that costs around 600, but comes in a kit with many of their cameras. I bought it with my first Fuji, the X-T1, years ago, and still use it for video on the X-T2. It has OIS and the zoom range (translates to roughly 27-85 in 35mm terms) is very useable. Fuji is famous for their great firmware updates, I would not be surprised if they addressed many of your qualms real soon. The film simulations are really nice for video, too. I shot an interview in "Classic Chrome" and didn't even touch the footage in post, that's how great I thought it looked.

I see the X-H1 as good video option for people who are already in the Fuji world and don't want shell out for new lenses. Having been there with the X-T2, I'd actually recommend to go without the battery grip if you ever intend to rig the camera. Puts the lens a bit too high and can get in the way with some of the shorter lenses, which can make installing a follow focus. Not that I'd advise using a follow focus on a focus-by-wire lens, but hey, sometimes that's all you have...

I don't think you'll get a lot of disagreement about the image being superior, even from Panasonic users (of which I am one.) I prefer Fuji color to Canon, personally. Assuming they continue to try and appeal to video shooters we could see a real beast of a camera from them in the next couple years. For video shooters though there are just better overall options out there.

@newfoundmass
@newfoundmass 6 жыл бұрын
Basti Halligalli depends on what you're looking for. The Fuji is also an excellent stills camera, so if stills are something you're hoping to shoot too, then it might be the better option. If the issues Caleb mentioned in the review aren't a big concern for you, it's worth considering. The colors are just gorgeous but obviously, as Caleb mentioned, the video has some drawbacks. The G85 is a fantastic camera if you're primarily going to use it for video and only the occasional picture (though it's decent there too). The stabilization is really great, and the 4K is very good, though I wish it had a higher data rate for video. One thing you need to be mindful of is the cost of lenses, etc. Fuji lenses are significantly more expensive than MFT lenses. Overall though, you really can't go wrong with either.

July 2020- This camera (after all the firmware updates by fuji) is a deal to steal. At around $1000 bucks with the battery grip package (are you serious Fuji!?) is probably the best VFM deal in the industry right now. Also, how on earth Caleb, is the Fuji glass expensive to Sony G Masters and Canon L series man!? Fuji lenses are so cheap when compared to other first party brand lenses and the build+optics quality is simply outstanding. Even the XT-3 comes at around 1200 bucks with the kit lens (probably the best kit lens any camera manufacturer makes, but without battery grip) Fujifilm is seriously pushing the boundaries when we talk about VFM!

Hopefully they'll add Eterna to the X-T2 and upcoming X-T3. I know it's available as a LUT, but I'd prefer it to be in-camera like with the X-H1. The battery situation is a fail. They could've used a larger battery in this new body, but went with compatibility instead. I understand that, but I think it was amazingly shortsighted. I think if you're shooting video in a studio setting on a tripod, and have short turnaround times, putting this thing in Eterna and plugging the camera in, you'd be hard-pressed to beat it. At least until the P4K comes out at almost half the price (which will include full Resolve Studio). The P4K is going to put the hurt on a lot of the video competitors, unless you need continuous AF. For the price, this needs to have feature-parity with a GH5, and it's not even close in video. Hopefully the X-H2? I'm also thinking they could enter the cinema-cam market with an FS5-like body and upgraded specs. Their MKX zooms are unbeatable for the price. Then again, I want Panasonic to do the same with the GH5 - that would slot in nicely between a GH5s and an EVA1.

I've just listed my XH1 for sale, a few weeks after purchasing it. I have an X-Pro 2 (and a backup) for my photography needs, and since taking on a new role at work which requires me to shoot more video, I was hoping the X-H1 would cover my video needs. I was left feeling underwhelmed by this camera, which is a real shame. I tried to force myself to like it, as I didn't want to accept that it wasn't going to work. But in the end it's just too much money to spend on a camera that doesn't perform as well as I need it to. It feels great in the hand though! And I really don't want to have to buy into a new system, buy new lenses, batteries etc. so left feeling a little frustrated. Fuji are great with firmware updates, so this camera will continue to improve over the coming weeks and months (possibly years), but I just don't have the time to wait for that, unfortunately. But Fuji are doing great things and I don't doubt that they will nail it with the X-H2.

@@a2zadi After the 2.0 update auto focus is very good. I think the difference between low light performance of the a6500 and the X-H1 is negligible. The X-H1 is a MUCH better made camera, and the color and IQ superior to the a6500. LCD/EVF are far better,--it's just a much better camera, for both photos and video. @avarmadillo
@avarmadillo 5 жыл бұрын
@@a2zadi So photographically the X-H1 is on a par with a full frame Nikon--so what?!? At this point dramatic improvements in IQ are very hard to achieve. Even though those asserting that as an objective fact simply beg the question. Beyond that, comparing a crop sensor camera to a full frame camera is largely apples to oranges. But an objective fact that does not beg the question is the X-H1 is an outstanding hybrid camera, making beautiful photos (I seldom take any) and video quality and features neither the Nikon 750 nor any other Nikon except the Z6 can hold a candle to. Maybe I wasn't clear before, but that was the point I tried to make.

I agree with a lot of what you say but there are a few things worth mentioning. Firstly, the glass. You make out that the Fujifilm glass is really expensive but Fuji's f/2 (18, 23, 35, 50mm) lenses are not that expensive, are weather sealed and have better AF than their more expensive lenses and they are optically very good (the only downside is you don't get clickless aperture with Fuji lenses). Also even with their more expensive lenses 56mm f/1.4, 90mm f/2, they are much less expensive than comparable lenses from Canon and Nikon and are also much smaller. I do agree that with an adapter older lenses work amazingly well with the Fuji. The AF is very mixed with the Fujifilm but has improved with the 1.10 firmware upgrade. Some lenses work exceptionally well 23mm f/2 is great but I have had issues at times with the 35mm f/2. The Face detect isn't the most reliable but has improved with the firmware update. The Kaizen firmware update philosophy of Fujifilm, is a double edged sword, for people coming from outside the system, they suddenly see other cameras having the spec's of their new shiny camera and are disappointed but in the long term it is really a massive bonus and you are getting serious upgrades for 2 or 3 years normally. One issue I am having is the X-H1 stopping recording, over a period of time, which has nothing to do with the 15/30 minute record time, when shooting at 4k (200mbps). Normally it will happen, when I have recorded several shots (stopping recording between each one) and then it will suddenly stop. I have a feeling this is down to the camera over heating. I don't know if there is something I can do in camera but it does seem to be a bit of an issue. Personally I am also thinking of getting the new Ninja V for the camera, which I think may help with some of the issues I have had.

Personally after being so sick of the Sony's, tired of the GH5 micro four thirds sensor and sick of the outdatedness of the Canon's I moved to Fuji for Photo and Video last year. Haven't looked back and I love it. Colours are gorgeous, video is crispy and the EVF is awesome. Although lens choice is relatively limited right now without a speedbooster, but that's okay since the Lenses are great (I do hate the fact that they're all electronic making focusing hard.) My personal favourite is the 56mm f1.2 Another thing, Fuji's constant firmware updates are awesome!

when u are going to used it only for photography consider buying the X-T2 . better price point and 90% of the features the X-H1 has. I switched from Canon to the X-T2 6 month ago and never regret

I'm photographer first, then videographer, and as such, this camera would be a great HYBRID camera for me, hence the "H" in the name. That being said, I'm quite happy with my XT2 and don't think to upgrade right now. Money issues ;-) By the way, you should really try some of Fuji's newer f/2 lenses out (23, 35, 90mm) course those lenses have insanely quick and accurate autofocus...

15 mins of 4k without the grip = non starter at the same price as the A7III or GH5. The A7III is the best hybrid mirrorless and the GH5 is the best video mirrorless, everyone else needs to step it up. Also the colors between camera's have gotten so close, it is no longer a determining factor.

The Sigma trio 16/30/56 f1.4 are more affordable for Fuji and you could now buy the X-S10 used for about the same money.

Very nice review. I waited for this one but since they didn't replace the sensor, and battery grip is a must for any video work, I chose the xt2 over this one. Better IBIS (it's better than the A7iii), better price and better Af, and it's going to be an excellent hybrid camera. I know, AF is not a "pro" thing, but it's a must for these run and gun times where you don't have a time. As for photography, it's excellent with a better body over the xt2 (and A7iii or A6500).

solid review. i just got the x-h1 and see your observations & criticisms of the camera as valid. i'm more of a photo shooter investigating video so for me it was a good gateway into video. Just curious, did you have the most recent firmware (ver 1.10) installed - I found the firmware update really helped the autofocusing with the fuji glass especially in the video mode.

Yep, 1.10 has totally "upgraded" the camera in my opinion. There's probably even further room for improvement.

b&H currently having a sale of the xh1 with the 8-16 for $2,300. The 8-16 is a $2,000 lens so you're getting the xh1 for $300 which is crazy...! Heck even if you don't want the lens you could sell it and get a crazy good deal on the camera.

Everything about this camera is a plus. My only concern is the weight and the fact you can't utilize e mount lenses like the Sigma 16 mm f 1.4 DC DN lens, which if you shot with it and the a6500, you'll understand.

Thank you :) I have the Fuji H1 and the autofocus is very fast if you have another lens. The 15-55mm 2.8 eg is excellent, the autofocus with the 23mm 2.0 is extremly fast. And: the audio-quality is a blast. Its superior to the XT2, eg. if I take the signal from the mixpre3 into the camera ;) best, from Switzerland :)

Why you can't trust to peaking at f1.4????????? Peaking works 100% even in f1.0. it's technology, it's way way more trusty than focusing without it on screen

This camera would be a lot better if, with a battery grip, it was just $1999 imo. Great review. Haven’t been super happy with my Sony colours, and the images from Fuji suit my personal aesthetic so much more. But, with the new Sony battery, I just can’t justify getting this sadly.

Fuji lenses aren't actually that expensive when you consider what you are getting. Basically they only have a pro line, like Canon L series, but they don't many cheaper lenses. Also try out the f/2 line of lenses, used they are pretty cheap

i bought this camera as an upgrade to my xt10, and boy oh boy, worth every penny, i already have lens for fuji so buying sony or panasonic will add cost to get another set of lens. I agree with you with batteries, but thats not really a con since you can just carry around more batteries, great things are good for fuji because of their firmware upgrade that helps the camera be really good at what is lacking. have you tried the new firmware update? its great!

I could live with those drawbacks - handheld stabilized video with Fuji's color science is huge for my kind of shooting: school classrooms, events, and music rehearsals where gimbals and stabilizers are obtrusive and awkward - oops, sorry kindergartner, for bashing your head with my Glidecam! Every camera is a compromise; I'm good with the H1.

Caleb...Fuji glass is "wildly expensive"? Most would agree that title definitely applies to Sony...that in fact Fuji lenses are priced very reasonably for the performance (excellent) that they provide. Perhaps you meant "wildly expensive" in some other way? Also, your link to the speedbooster is dead...could you say again which one you've been happy with? Thanks...

damn its 2019 and i really want this camera... ive seen this camera with grip and 3 batteries sell on ebay for 950ish. Very tempting. But the adapter i need to make my canon glass work is 300$. For a few hundred more i could get a a7iii. But the Eterna setting looks very nice. All around it looks like a great apc mirrorless option.
