• FINAL MEDICAL EXAMS Vi... -~-
Having trouble conceptualising how anaesthetists use MAC values to keep patients asleep? Look no further than this video and the links below! Clarify the concept and find out what pharmacological and physiological factors will increase and decrease your MAC and why all of our patients remain asleep and unresponsive whilst under anaesthetic.
You may have to pause and replay portions of this video to recap key points - this is a rapid overview!
All volatile anaesthetic agents have their own properties, giving them different MAC values (see here: www.propofology...)
To see how Volatile Anaesthetics actually work, see here: www.propofology...)

The music in the background is really really unnecessary and distracting.

There are more resources on the website that explain how each volatile gas has it's own MAC value (%) - see links in the video description :-)

I would think that hypercapnea would decrease MAC since hypercapnic narcosis can knock people out

The background music were annoying I couldn’t concentrate, otherwise, it was a well simplified explanation, thank you.

I still have no idea what MAC actually is a measure of. Since it's given as a percentage. percentage of what to over what?
@mellowdoctor9029

Its the percentage of the inspired air

essentially, if a MAC is more than 100% it cannot be given (and is very weak). the patient still needs to breathe Oxygen, so if 100% of what they are getting is that anesthetic they are not receiving any oxygen. For example, N2O (laughing gas) has a MAC of 104%. This cannot be given because the patient will be receiving no oxygen. So it must be used in combination with something else. Hope this makes sense

@@mohiltrivedi8634 A whole year since I've seen this, thanks for the reminder that MAC exists. Sort of understanding, so perhaps we should look at the opposite case. 2% MAC then corresponds to only 2% of the air being breathed contains the drug? Is that it? Do you know why high mac corresponds to lower potency ("very weak")?
@mohiltrivedi8634
@mohiltrivedi8634 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaeletzkorn exactly! a higher MAC means that more of the drug has to be inhaled to have the same effect. therefore a higher MAC means a lower potency. and obviously the more drug you inhale the more side effects and unwanted properties come with the drug as well.

@@mohiltrivedi8634 104 % N2O required to produce the same anaesthetic effect as of 0.75 % halothane. So halothane is more potent. But N2O rapidly diffuses into blood than halothane, and ultimately reaches brain. So doesn't that make N2O a more potent anaesthetic?? I couldn't get this contradiction..

Why would you add music to this video, you can't hear what you're saying. Take the music out and stop reading off a script.
