I get the golfing world go on about Moe Norman and his ball striking. But i watched Mac on a range hit balls, and the sound he made with irons was amazing, every strike sounded identical. Amazing to see and hear,

I agree, he was very nearly as good as Hogan !!!!

I agree - the sound at ball impact is different with the top ball strikers, it is a very solid 'click' sound every time.

Moe was the same way - he didn't have as much power - but the sound of the impact strike was very distinct and the same every time. I watched and played with both of them a few times with Mac more with Moe - but the flight of the ball seemed different with Moe it was as if the ball got larger in flight - after being puzzled by it - I eventually came to believe it was a product of how straight end over end spin he put on the ball it was just cleaner than anyone else

Great analysis… I would to see you do Victor Hovland side by side with Elkington… they both have high hands at top of back swing but are different thru impact

Very nice. A good teacher is a good differentiator. Just before you mentioned Singh and Mickelson that is exactly what I was thinking. Perhaps this difference is what makes someone like Phil kind of wild with the driver compared to Hogan or Trevino? The grip too is big. Weak vs. strong effect on the clubface timing at impact?

A lot of great ball strikers in both camps upright/deep & neutral/strong grips. The full swings that have a straightish trail arm around impact worry me. Phil and Tiger(with driver) both have a lot more going on then Hogan/Snead/Mac near the ball

Great stuff! Can you did a video showing a swing you think would be easiest for the average golfer?

Great stuff, wasn’t Mac big on CF and CP release type, his version- swing out right with stall and swing left and around with grip torque and body motion. Had a big session with Seve discussing this? And he could hit left and right handed?

Yes! I think the best of the best: Snead/Tiger/Hogan can change their sequences and move their swing directions/AoA/club faces etc to make the ball do what they want under the most pressure and Mac’s teachings emphasized that need

Can you elaborate on a few things? 1. Do all/most golf swings need to shift hand path out during the downswing or you just happened to choose two players that do so? 2. What is shifting hand path out supposed to help promote for the swing? Shallowing or… 3. For my swing in particular, I’m afraid of shifting the hands out because I get the feeling of it causing and outside in swing path. Is that the case or does it have no effect on the swing path?

Thanks for the ?’s! 1-I think most people release their arms down off of their body from the top of the swing in an effort to swing more to the right(RH). This means they have to keep the right side of their body back & high to have a chance. But this causes them to run out of right arm(straight right arm) at impact and that’s dangerous for all functions of the club control(face/low-point/sweet spot consistency). 2-The arms should stay up on the body in transition(while maintaining or going into external rotation of the right shoulder from an internal position(like Hovland). This will cause the hand path to move outward and the shaft should shallow when that happens with proper grip pressure 3-Most people don’t even come close to how much their top right rib needs to compress and crunch down to the right side of the belt buckle from the top of the swing. This “side-bending” is blended with the opening of the body. Combine those motions with some flattening(arching) of the left wrist and uncocking the wrist and the clubhead will fall nicely into the ball.

I know everyone right tilts in the downswing. This question is about the guys that really tilt to the right in the downswing. Do most/all of them " run out of right arm" like you mentioned regarding Elkington?
@elliotl7021

For example - it seems Hovland does not run into that problem. (And maybe it's not even a problem, but it's not something I love.)

John, Thanks for this. Do you recall what lie angles Mac used and encouraged?
@DochetyGolf
@DochetyGolf 3 ай бұрын
He played Hogan Personals, I swung his 7-iron and the lie angle was in the average range. Even though his hands are low at p1 with the toe of the club off the ground, he returns to impact with much higher & uncocked wrists.

I think Elk at Riviera was a better version of what we see here in this video. His tendencies started to overtake the good stuff methinks. Good stuff though, keep up the keen eye and thirst for greatness.

There is only one feel that can accomplish this and that the head following the circular downswing path, then bowing down, to the divot , 4 inches in front of the ball. Ps : its all in the head position and the correct rotation will follow 😊
