I guess some of these are pretty widely known about, but it's nice to spread some cool info not everyone might have heard about on this old machine...
I make videos about older tech - mostly Macs, almost every week. Subscribe and I’ll see you in the next one!

Great tips! This design has so much integrity, with customizability and expandability that is off the charts!

I have had a Mac Pro 5.1 since 2011 and I have fitted three extra hard drives, replaced the original single processor tray with two six core processor tray and upgrade the memory to 128GB. It is an excellent computer.

Absolutely the best Apple computer ever designed IMHO. I still use mine professionally running Ventura 13.6.1 daily for music production. 2 x 3.46 Xeon 5690, 128G Ram, NVME drives; SSD's, USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 3.0. I don't need anything else.

Couldn’t agree more. The dual CPU variants are getting rarer, so if you do sell eventually, it’ll be worth your while!

0:22 the lock is a kensington loop lock, you use it to loop a steel cable to the Mac and it prevents it from being stolen (hopefully). It works like a bike lock. 2:38 so I actually can report that the power supply in my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 did fail, but it was my own fault for trying to use an RX 590 in it and overloading the additional power ports. it worked solidly before that and solidly after I replaced it.
@montaguebarnabasltd
@montaguebarnabasltd 3 ай бұрын
For some reason I didn’t associate that with the Kensington loop lol. You’re absolutely right. Blimey, first I’ve heard of that. I guess you diced with death and paid the consequences. Glad the machine is working now, though.
@purplepioneer5644
@purplepioneer5644 3 ай бұрын
@@montaguebarnabasltd the 590 was a factory OC model with a 350-375w power limit and that killed the original PSU in the beast. The 3,1 has a similar PSU to the one you have; they’re rock solid.

Question! I see you swapped out the Optical drive with an HDD (the one labeled 'Windows Data 4TB HDD"). What sled / multi mount did you use for that?
@montaguebarnabasltd
@montaguebarnabasltd 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Considering the optical drive would be on a flat shelf in its own section of the Mac, I just left the HDD plugged into the optical drive’s SATA cable, and resting on that shelf. In a laptop, that would be a big problem, but as the Mac Pros static machines, I don’t have to worry about it getting shaken about or anything. I’ve got a lot of other Mac Pro 5,1 videos which go over some of these things, so have a look if you have the time.

@@montaguebarnabasltd Yes, and who wants to move that beast around anyway! I love the beast as I have the 2010 Mac Pro as well. Upgraded the processor to the same one you have with the single processor tray, 48 GB ram in the three channel config, rx580, and start up disk only running the system and major apps on an NMVE/pci. I'm sitting on a new NMVE/pci as I keep putting off the upgrade to Monterey that will require either OC or OCLP. I need to just do it already, but keep watching too many videos with the various issues encountered making me want to really nail everything down first. Also have my 2009 MacBook Pro with a freshly installed SSD ready to do an OCLP upgrade to Monterrey as well. The unibody chassis is amazing as I have dropped it a few times with barely a scratch or dent. I even had a vase full of water accidentally tipped over on it while it was in sleep mode such that when I opened it up water just poured out of it. I yanked the battery and suspended it open without the bottom casing attached over a space heater blowing on it at a low heat setting for a full 48 hours before I attempted to power it up. After 48 hours, I took a deep breath and powered it up successfully, and it has worked dependably since. I have an old PowerMac 7500 that I had at the time upgraded to a G3 processor that I was able to overclock, and installed a USB upgrade via a pci slot. Although I rarely turn the thing on, I can still power it up as a fun time machine experience.

@@flickwtchr You have a VERY similar machine to mine, yeah. I felt daunted by OCLP at first too tbh, so much so that I bought a pre-made SSD with Monterey patched onto it. I later realised my mistake when I found out how easily it was done myself on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Give it a shot on the MacBook first I’d say! It’s lucky to be alive anyway lol.
