I bought a 27” late 2014 iMac for £90 including keyboard and trackpad 2. I spent a little time overhauling it and installed Ventura on OCLP. I’m a happy bunny. Oh btw. I do have a Mac Mini M1 as well. But you know what. I prefer the old intel most of the time 🤣🤣.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro, 18GB RAM, and 2TB SSD storage from Apple's certified refurbished! Even though M4 is literally around the corner, I still like this one because I plan to video edit on it given I am trying to stick with Intel Arc on my Windows desktop... Plus battery performance on ARM vs an x86 Windows laptop... I do miss my Surface Book...

You’re right of course but for the tinkerers among us that do not actually need it for serious work the vintage ones are more fun. Although I’d love to get my hands on an M machine to play with if I can find one for the right price but I guess I just have to wait a bit to find one under €100. 😊

The hard drive in my 4 year old Intel iMac started dying. I plugged in an external SSD since there’s still a lot of life in the iMac (plus I can keep using the SSD even if I no longer have the iMac). I’m not planning to replace the iMac until it no longer gets updates or my important apps aren’t supported.

Always wanted a trashcan mac. Years ago I saw a video of a server farm completely made of trashcan macs, I wonder how that is going now? Was awesome to see racks and racks of little hollow cylinders. I do own a 2017 iMac with 5K screen, still looks gorgeous and works well.

I am using a 2019 intel macbook pro 16 . It works perfectly fine and no issues so far. I am not a video editor and mostly my work is normal browsing and coding works . It works super smooth and the speakers are great listening to podcast and online lessons. Even video editing in FCP it works well, the fan noise dosent bother me much . I feel no need to upgrade to M1 macbooks now , because i have a ipad -> M1 ipad pro 12.9 . Dont wanted to waste any money spending my devices as long as all works perfectly well .

Just recently upgraded to an M3 Pro 14 inch 18gb ram mbp from a 2011 mb air. Only reason i upgraded was fusion 360 dropping support for my old air. Will be keeping this as for as long as it’s supported by the apps I need.

Yep. 17-inch MBP is a legend. I had both the 2009 and 2011. Still looking for a laptop that´s that good. I gave up and bought a Thinkpad with Linux. My 2011 is an absolute top spec anti-glare and it got a new logic board when the goodwill campaign was. I was actually working at an authorized Apple workshop at that time so I swapped it myself. Since that day I used a small app that disables the "auto use" of the GPU and I never connect it to external monitor (which powers up the GPU). So hopefully it will last by not heating up that GPU. It has an easy life nowadays but it´s sad that it´s stuck with High Sierra. And OCLP upgrades cannot be used without using the GPU as I understand. And the story is the same with Linux. So I keep it just for some light uses where High Sierra is ok, and because I love it so much. I say it again, the sweetspot that they were is something I haven´t found since ten years of search. The LG Gram 17 was a "maybe" but I don´t know... It was 16:10 at least. 1080p is just rubbish. Funny about Windows 11 requirements of 2018 or newer CPU. My 2011 has a quad core i7, 16GB´s of RAM and a fast SSD. Guess what, it runs Windows 11 in a VM at very good performance.

I agree if you plan to run MacOS on them; if you can find one for much less, like $300, they do run linux quite well these days. I have nixos on a 2013 MBP and wifi, trackpad - everything works very well. Soon I will do the same to my 2019 MBP/16".

My problem with the ARM MacBooks is the fact they only have 8GB in the base configuration. If you can't upgrade the ram then Apple should include at least 16Gb or even better just give the option to upgrade it later. Also it's just a bigger iPhone, so they can just decide to cut updates and you won't be able to use a modern OS anymore.

Good video, BUT you're missing a graphics issue MacBook. That's the 10,1 MacBook Pro (aka the Mid 2012 Retina and Early 2013 Retina MBP). The power management chip on their GT 650M dedicated GPU is known to desolder itself if under heavy load, requiring board-level repair. While not as common as the 2011 15" graphics issue, it still is an issue for MacBook buyers to be aware of. I have used a 2012 15" Unibody for a while, and love it, the heft doesn't bother me. But the early 2013 Retina I used for a few months had the graphics card die

I understand his point of view; we are already at M3, but this applies much more to the American reality. As a Brazilian, for example, I bought a 2019 MacBook Pro, 32GB of RAM + i9 8 cores 16 threads, with 1TB SSD and a 5500m with 4GB VRAM, for a bargain at R$5000 (in comparison, this model was R$29000 when it was released), plus it only had 90 battery cycles-a real steal! These machines are extremely powerful, and for my use case, better than the Apple Silicon M series, because they have the x86_64 architecture which handles Docker much faster (due to better virtualization support). It’s not a mistake to buy an Intel series MacBook; the prices have plummeted, and both you and I need to take advantage of this. Unfortunately, Apple consumers tend to think that the latest release is the best and perhaps that the older ones are BAD by definition. This is not true. Yes, it's true that the operating system support will soon end, but it's a machine that will last for many good years. Consider getting a highly configured 2019 MacBook Pro. Also, understand that this "cheapness" might only apply to the United States, and in other parts of the world, the M1 is still extremely expensive. In the end, the right choice is the one that is within your budget.

Me: I need virtualization on a daily basis and the Apple Silicon is not up to scratch yet. My employer bought a refurb from Apple (i7 8 cores/32GB RAM/512GB SSD, 4 Thunderbolt ports), which does the job just fine. I'd wish it had better cooling though.

What exactly are you doing with virtualization if you don't mind me asking? I have a fully loaded M2 Air and regularly use Linux VM's, Windows 11 Enterprise and BSD. They run beautifully. I feel like the Windows 11 runs faster than it does on my desktop.

You for got do not buy a butterfly keyboard mac, that is a number one disaster waiting to happen! i use my old intel macs with linux and they run great. they stay up to date have 0 issues. and they are cheap. and the SSD is replaceable in the older models and in my machine the ram is up gradable . here in the rest of the world apple stuff second hand stays very expensive and the new stuff is even more expensive! in USA you can still buy the M1 air, in a big chain retail store for 800 buck. Here in Europe you can not and a base m2 air is 1300 dollars inc tax a m3 only runs you 1350. a base 15 inch will run you 1668 dollars. as you can see that 16 inch intel macbook for only 800 bucks is looking very nice for me .

Got a mid 2012 Air, just needed that MagSafe2 adapter and it was set. Could do with a healthier battery. Core i7 model, 8gb ram, 250gb SSD. It was free, so I believe you should pay what an Intel mac is worth - even if you like me are going to give it Linux in order to make it a fair bit safer and actually supported and updatable and usable.

This is laughable, I snagged a dual xeon mac pro 5,1 with 128gb of ram for £50 and its perfect for running VM's even supports the latiest mac os with a couple cheeky mods, its kinda comfy for gaming too. The M series meme is not mature enough (kinda like its userbase) to be taken seriously, since they have an unpatchable exploit in their CPU's right now. Not to mention since its apple hardware its super locked down, no reparability, no modular parts, its peak coomsumer.

Unfortunately I have a very different reason for needing to continue using my 2015 15", and that's that I use very specialist dev software that simply does not work on Apple silicon. Open Core won't work with M-chips, so I'm dreading the day I have to attempt to upgrade, when the App Store finally disallows app binaries submitted from the last supported Intel version of MacOS. This'll likely be Sonoma, in about 2 years time 😬😬😬

6:33 Let me just stop you right there; my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro has all the same repairability issues as an M-chip based machine. Everything is soldered in. Edit: Also, for me, it’s not (entirely) about part failure. I found out my RAM was soldered in when I wanted to upgrade it from 16GB to 32GB - a trivial thing in previous Macs. This was just 2 years in. And yeah, I was stuck with 512GB of storage too.
