The dynamic Aberdonian who brought an entrepreneurial attitude and relentless optimism with him to Otago, quickly becoming a major player in Dunedin's commercial and political life. Inheriting provincial leadership from Captain Cargill, Macandrew fell from grace in the early 1860s but spectacularly bounced back and is remembered as one of pioneer Otago's most important leaders.
