I bought both the M1 MacBook Pro 14" and the M1 Air. After a week of using both side by side, I ended up returning the Pro because the Air fulfills all of my needs without any issues or lags. It's truly unbelievable just how powerful this little thing is, especially considering it doesn't even have a fan, which is perfect for music production. $800 vs $2000 - it's a nobrainer for me.

Thank you for the excellent and informative video, I’ve been researching a new Mac and was comparing the mba and mbp. I make dopey 5-10 minute 4k KZfaq videos using iMovie and wasn’t sure if the M1 would be up to the task without cooking itself. Your video answered that question. With the new m2 mba now available, I was able to score a good deal from the Apple refurbished store on a 16 gb, 1 tb mba, so I just placed my order. Thanks again.

M1 macbook air 8gb 256 I use mine mainly as a personal laptop and photo editing machine w capture one pro and lightroom and occasional lumafusion editing (coming from an ipad pro only setup). The only thing i find the m1 air struggles is camera tethering on capture one w a filter being applied on every photo it imports and cap 1 hosting a server for sending photos on my ipad thru cap 1 pilot all at the same time. its smooth for the 1st 15 mins and gets slow beyond that mark. And sometimes it doesnt import after a few hundred photos. I think this is the ram filling up or thermals. But otherwise its something i can live with. I know what im doing is a "pro workflow" more suitable for macbook pros like an 14 inch MBP w m1 chip and a fan, but for a laptop that costs only $1k, im happy w the device.

I’ve been using an M1 air 8gb for video editing in DaVinci for close to a year. And I gotta say I allows you to do 80% of things without a stutter. It has however problems when it comes to using a bit more complex effects like Depthmap or Beauty - however if you don’t mind waiting for the results of your changes in these effects - it’s not a major issue. Without complex effects and 3D -animations, timeline etc runs smooth If you will run more than couple renders a day, I would advise to buy a cooling fan for the laptop, especially for the summers (I used to cool it with cooling pads) Nonetheless, I am astonished about the capabilities of this small machine ;) EDIT: for any 3D animations more complex thanl basics - buy a PRO and pump the RAM

Thank you for sharing this. Been trying to figure out whether to get it or not. How do you think it performs with multiple windows open with a bunch of tabs?
@Jelcynide
@Jelcynide Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyzie Thank you for your comment. Don't know what are your tab management preferences, I generally tend to keep as few tabs open as possible (aestethic reasons). However I often had 10 tabs open in Safari and another 5 in Chrome and there was no slowdown at all. Generally, I don't think that any reasonable amount of tabs will affect the performance. There is obviously a slowdown if you are rendering a movie.I also recently observed that when you animate a powerpoint and have other work apps opened (like Teams & Outlook) the browser might stutter from time to time, nothing serious however.

So a dilemma, kinda urgent haha; I have the option between M1 Air 16 256gb & M1 Pro 8 256gb, due to current offers n my budget. The price is only 50€ more for the Pro. Now I need a new laptop and am moving to Mac OS for the first time for my freelance work (a lot of videocalls and documents) and better my video-editing to take on more substantial work in the future. Is the M1 chip really that great/powerful enough to let me move to intensive work with Pro 8gb ram? Or is it the 16gb ram Air a better bet..? 😬

#M1 Macbook Air I am very frustrated with my ability to edit video for my KZfaq Channel. I was previously told it was my computer wasn't power enough. I have been a PC user for many years so I wasn't ready to swap to apple and learn a whole new OS. So I spent a fortune on a gaming laptop with loads of on board storage 3TB SSD. 32 GB RAM, and 16 GB Video with a well known graphics card for gamers. Basically it is a gamer computer. I am still getting occasional crashes and challenges with being able to smoothly work through fairly straight forward videos of me doing wood working. I saw several Black Friday efficient on the MacBook Air M! with 256 GB SSD storage. Would it be worth the extra investment to switch platforms for video editing?

Well I’m still conflicted on the ram issue. Like I am not a heavy editor. But people say that the 8gb ram slowly destroys your add with the swapping function when it is full. It takes years but again, I’m looking for a long term relationship with this laptop. I had my weak presario for 12 years. And the new laptops I have got only last about a year before they start dying off. Planning on getting a air with a 1tb storage And still on the fence on the ram. I feel like spending the $1500 for a 1tb, 16gb ram would be the best option for long longevity. Thanks for the tips.

Sorry what does " proxies" mean ( in video editing) ?
@TerrenRule
@TerrenRule 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Proxies are just low resolution video files that take the place of the original footage. It allows you to work faster and edit faster, as you aren’t using the full resolution of the video. Then once you are done editing, you turn off proxies, and export the video in the full original quality. I hope that makes sense!

Will the MBA M1 with 8gb RAM be enough for KZfaq editing (content/Anime 1080p)?

I’m sure that will be more than enough. I edit 1080p videos with quad core i5 lol.

Thanks. Just subscribed. Regarding 8/16GB, I have found, that when playing around with 6k/8k video and have the Activity Monitor open, the memory is actually not the issue (unlike multi-tasking where it definitely is). The Memory Pressure (although using swap) is fine, it is the CPU hitting its limit that causes the stuttering. Possibly some effect of thermal throttling as well (I have an 8GB/512GB Air). Not sure if the 16GB would fare any better at all in this case. It is just the Graphical limitations as evidenced in Geekbench Compute & fps tests. Still amazing for integrated. BTW love Toronto - lot of family there.

Hey.. I just ordered Mac air 7cpu 8gpu 8gb 512 ssd… and im wondering if I should have upgraded the ssd to 1tb. Just for basic KZfaq videos and blog social media content.. watching movies etc… I know you can always use a cloud.. how are you doing so far with 8gb/512 ssd? Thanks :)

@@JAtwinkletoes1386 Hi Liz A. Congratulations on the purchase! Sure you'll be happy. I've had it for some time now and it is the best laptop that I have ever used. Re your question: For the use cases you mention - basically browsing and consuming content, the SSD doesn't really matter as you are not actually storing/saving anything. So even 256GB would be fine. However, you will want to store some stuff and I think that you are saving to your SSD, then I think 512GB is a good 'sweet spot'. The 256GB will fill up very quickly. Regarding 1TB, it depends what you want to store on your computer. Video takes up the most space depending on resolution so obviously 8k>4k>HD>SD. Music, you are okay except when you get into Apple Lossless (or similar) & High Res Lossless which again use up a lot of space. Photos again depend on resolution. You will find so many different answers on the internet as to how much space various media take up. Thats because there are so many variables. The best way to estimate how much space you need is to do a sample (x10) of a particular media you use, see how much space is used and extrapolate from there. Note though, if you just want extra storage to get up to 1TB, you could always buy an external SSD - about half the price of Apple Memory. As for other specs in regard to your usage. 7/8 core GPU: The 8 core GPU is about 14% faster than the 7 core. You may see it in slightly improved frame rate in games but not in videos or movies. 7 cores are fine for that. 8/16GB Unified Memory The 8GB Unified Memory can handle pretty much anything. This is because it uses additional memory (swap) from the SSD when required. There is no single task that I am aware of that the 16GB can do that the 8GB can not. It may be that the 16GB is a little faster for some very specific tasks e.g. in rendering 6/8k videos or very heavy coding but in 99% of use cases you won't notice it.. The only 'limitation' I can see in 8GB is multi-tasking. But you have to put that into context. The 8GB can do a huge amount of multitasking, its just that the 16GB can do a colossal amount. In practical terms, I've never encountered a limit with 8GB unless I've deliberately induced it, as in open up 60x Chrome tabs + Da Vinci Resolve playing 8k vids + this + that + whatever. That's because of the swap memory. Even though it supposed to be 8GB, the Activity Monitor sometimes shows me using over 20GB! Actually, one thing I've just thought of. if you get something like 'Parallels' to put virtual Windows on your Mac, then 16GB would be a good idea as you have to allocate memory to that.

@@parjau4554 Hi there! Would like to consult you too. I am currently learning how to edit KZfaq videos, is Air sufficient in terms of durability and performance or should I get a Pro instead?
@parjau4554

@@Fmaistix1 Hello. The M1 Air is fine. YT videos generally go up to 4k and the Air is more than good enough for that. In terms of M1 Air vs M1 Pro, for normal tasks there is no difference at all. For very extended video tasks where the CPU is running at 100% continuously, you may see a (theoretically as based on Cinebench results) difference of 5-15% depending on whether you have the 7 or 8 core model. In practice, from real world tests I've seen (e.g. rendering), the difference is at the lower end of that. So, performance wise, except at the most extreme of limits where the last iota may matter, there is nothing that the Pro can do that the Air cannot (I've actually got a 12k clip on Da Vinci Resolve that I am playing around with!). It's just that, on the odd occasion, the Air will take a little longer as it doesn't have an active cooling system. However, there is an upside to this because as far as durability is concerned, the Air is potentially better than the Pro in that it doesn't have a fan - no moving parts, no dust buildup inside. It's a solid machine, no signs of anything loosening in the 9 months I've had it, you just have to be careful with metallic objects as the anodised finish will scratch (shows more on the Space Grey), but that is the same with the Pro. One big positive for the Pro is battery life. It lasts substantially longer than the Air, 4-7 hours more from tests I've seen online (one channel had it going to 20 hours!). Something you may want to consider is that the Pro models will be upgraded very soon. If you want a Pro, I'd wait. It could be that this model will remain, if not and you want a particular feature (e.g. trackpad - which many believe will not appear on the next Pros), then you could always get a refurbished one from Apple and save money. Also, if it becomes the 'old' model, it will depreciate. I think (but obviously don't know) that the Air will be around for a while. People love it. The final thing to consider is memory. In my experience, there is no difference in performance at all between the 8GB and 16GB. The only difference is that you can almost limitlessly multitask on the 16GB and the 8GB will eventually limit (but that is an extremely high limit). Also, if you want to use Parallels and assign a larger proportion of memory to e.g. Windows, then having the larger memory would obviously be better.

Whoops, sorry. The feature which may not be on the new Pros is the Touch Bar, NOT trackpad!!! That would be a pretty useless laptop.
