Dave2D review of the 2018 15" Apple Macbook Pro. The Core i9 runs hot and throttles harder than any of the MacBooks I've ever used.

The 8th gen CPU from Intel has 6 cores but the thermal design of the 15" MacBook Pro isn't cut out for removing the heat. The true-tone screen is awesome. It's still one of the best screens on the market and is very bright. Third gen butterfly switch keyboard has the membrane to prevent dust from coming in. And the option for 32 gigs of ram is great but it's still a MacBook Pro and there will be thermal limitations on this design.

I like your review but I want to add little more on this update. Don't you think this is a joke when they made 13inch without the touch bar is still 7th gen? and only 13inch with touch bar that a lot of ppl hates comes with 8th gen it looks like to me is a it's just trying to sell the touch bar that ppl don' really want and need would you agree on this? do you think extra dollar is worth that bar? what is your tought on this?

qu peter Doesn't matter with liquid metal thermal compound. Did you see the heat sink that is one of the worst I have seen in a performance laptop. It is largely undersized for a 45watt tdp cpu.

No surprise there...even the i7 8850h struggles even in a larger chassis - never mind the i9. pure marketing. Same thing with Dell in their XPS 15 and G7. Glad you are warning people Dave otherwise people will be throwing away their money. What bothers me is that these companies know this and they risk tarnishing their product reputation.

Ive is fine, Cook and his virtue signalling softness needs to go, they got far too comfortable and lazy, no doubt the blue hairs are taking over and less and less of the company is devoted to engineering excellence. apple has really let down its core base of customers. the new macbook pro is pretty much unusable for professional work. im not talking processor, im more about compatibility with existing workstations. I had to buy $120 worth of extra gear just to plug in my monitors... wth. now, my mouse wont function due to the relay. also, the computer heats up so much its uncomfortable to touch. not sure how anyone can stay an avid mac fan after this type of experience with their bread and butter.

Apple products usually don't last longer that 1-2 years if you are actually using them. I have purchased Macbook Pro in 2010 for everyday work. After couple years of usage, it's hard drive started falling apart, battery life degraded, track pad stopped working. By 2014, it became impossible to use and I replaced it with a windows desktop. I tried turning it on recently and it's dead. Same with every iPhone that I have used (I switched to android and it's 100% better). I understand that making a decent laptop is a challenge and I have seen many windows laptops from different tech companies falling apart sooner. But that's not an excuse for making shit product that stops working after 1-2 years of usage.

Since the silicone doesn‘t have any other function than protecting the keys from getting dirt under, I don‘t thinks it will cause any problems. It’s not integral to the functionality or the mechanism and even if it tears, the only thing that would happen is that the keyboard will be more prone to dirt than before. Also noteworthy is that silicone is way more affected by this when it is exposed to uv light, which shouldn‘t be the case under the caps.

The title seems to be quite unfair to XPS, considering how they have exactly the same problem, but in Apple's case it's pointed that configurations with weaker CPU are ok, while for Dell the message sounds like "yeah... don't buy until they fix that" Or maybe I'm just overthinking it

Don't get me wrong, the products are still great. Flaws and oversights ignored (I mean, my $4K desktop PC isn't without its nightmares). But their engineering team is run by people qualified in Marketing. And unfortunately, it works. But yeah, problems aside, the machines are finally usable for pro work again, albeit somewhat slowly. They're overpriced, but what we're paying extra for is the leather seat premium model of the car we want attributes that just make the experience more pleasing. Unfortunately - that costs money. And being in the creative industry - paying for good design is something I support. As you know when you HAVEN'T paid for good design (use a toshiba laptop, or any windows laptop).

That's only a small segment of the market (and not one that drives continuous profits, college students don't upgrade their macbooks annually/bi-annually), the arguably largest portion is developers for web and iOS. They've recently dropped the ball and basically gave the middle finger to developers recently with the touch bar, keyboard problems, and now making a joke out of pro monicker. If something isn't done soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see a mass exodus from MacOS to Windows or possibly linux (although that is a very questionable possibly, linux just doesn't do the whole "work as expected" as well as MacOS or even Windows.).

I'm not here to start a war. So don't. But the nicest windows laptops I've used have mimicked Apple's designs. And the best performing laptops are designed to look more like racing cars. Which is fine in their own right, it's just not elegant like what happens when you employ actual designers to pioneer things.

Been using Macbook as my primary machine for several years, but since the "Butterflop" keyboard, "Gimmic Bar" and "USB-C" only interface made me a customer they lost for ever. I handled the Matebook X at a Microsoft store and I was blown away by how beautiful and well built the machines is. Considered the Surface a while back but gave it a cold shoulder because the battery and SSD is sealed in and not user serviceable.

Returned my new Macbook Pro after watching this video. My 3 year old Windows laptop out performed this Laptop by nearly 50% .... totally unacceptable. That asked me if I would first talk to a few guys at the desk and they told me there was no way it was throttling and that if it were I could have it replaced. They ran the tests on another brand new 2018 Macbook Pro and it throttled as well. I told them you have to warn potential customers that this is happening. They remained silent.

Although Apple would never admit this, the 2015 Macbook Pro is just a better design, in every way: Magsafe, other useful ports, a better keyboard, a bigger battery and no useless touch bar that almost nobody wants and consumes power. Imagine if they had taken that form factor and, taking advantage of the new CPUs' better power efficiency, had reduced the battery size a little to accommodate a better cooling solution. Just add the true tone screen and you would have a wicked laptop.

I agree, except: better keyboard? Lots of other people praise the new butterfly switches EXCEPT the durability issues, and we gotta see how the new silicone layers do the job. The 2015 model had THICK bezels.. The touch bar I don't really understand the hate since if you press Fn key long enough it will work as normal function keys.
