Keep in mind the load on the circuit has to be derated to 80% of capacity, so a 50 amp circuit supports a 40 amp setting on the charger. Also, do not skimp on the outlet. The cheaper ones are not designed or built to carry that much load for that long. Another great video from the best in the field. Thank you Liv and Patrick.

Yay! You got your Mach-E back! This post will prove informative for EV neophytes! As for me… heh… I've been charging my EVs for a dozen year now, from both 120V and 240V outlets, dedicated EVSEs, and mobile connectors at RV parks, the homes of family and friends, etc. Easy-peasy!

The typical exterior or garage 120v outlet is a NEMA 5-15 (15A peak and 12A continuous). If the outlet is fed with a 20A breaker using 12-2 wire the outlet can be changed to a NEMA 5-20 (20A peak and 16A continuous), and then with the correct plug adapter the EV can charge at 15 or 16amp/120v which provides a nice boost in charging at very little cost. 12-2 wire will also support a breaker change from 15A to 20A. Additionally if the 12-2 wire outlet has a dedicated breaker (no other loads on that circuit) it might be possible to change the breaker to a 20amp 240v and the outlet to a NEMA 6-20, which will allow charging at 240v at up to 16amps. This is often the cheapest way to get L2 charging at home. I did both of these mods in my garage for very little money and I have NEMA 5-20 and 6-20 outlets available.

I installed the Emporia charger (using a plug in) and installed their panel monitoring. I love it since we are on a demand load billing - the charger will adjust what it supplies to the car based on what the main panel is using - so we don’t go over a 10kw demand at any time even if the hot tub is heating.

Just got a new Mach-E, and it took a while to determine that I needed to connect at home before I would be able to set a limit. I wish there was a way to set the default limits for AC and DC charging separate from the locations. I also work from home most days, and there is Level 2 charging at work on the days I do go in. I plan to only charge to 75% at home. We will see how that works. We have TOU rates, so I will be excluding the off-peak periods. Thanks for the video.

You can do a 48A EVSE on a 60A outlet (NEMA14-60) per NEC 625.44 (A) (3) and hardwired goes up to an 80A EVSE on a 100A circuit (such as the Ford Charge Station Pro). You could have done something like the Emporia with load management. It uses a couple current sensors that get installed on the line side of your main breaker and monitor your overall load in real time. Light load and the EVSE can run up to 48A, turn on everything in your house and the output can drop all the way down to 6A. The Ford mobile EVSE is made by Webasto, who also makes identical EVSE for other manufacturers, such as VW, that are cheaper.
@thomaswilson2917

You might consider not putting in an outlet as some chargers are hardwired and no outlet is needed. Also if you put in a outlet new codes require a ground fault breaker. Another thing to consider. Your car now has a CCS connector and all new vehicles from Ford will be using the Tesla plug. There are chargers that have both.. Built in CVS adapters for present vehicles and a Tesla plug for new vehicles.

I recently went from a 2014 ford edge eco boost to a 2023 mach e gt and I’m saving between $0.12 and $0.14 per mile on fuel. Ford edge Gas ~ $3.60/gal Mpg ~ 22.22 highway $/mile ~ $0.162 Mach e Electric ~ $0.06 - $0.09/kWh MpkWh ~ 2.75 $/mile ~ $0.022 - $0.033 In reality I’m actually saving more because my estimates for the gas car are based on highway mileage. Now the economics are very dependent on the type of driving you do. If you mostly do a lot of highway driving the gas car will be more efficient because you’ll have to use a lot of paid chargers which are more expensive and take much longer than filling a gas tank. However, if you do a lot of city driving and make more use of the regen braking and charging at home, then you will save a lot of money compared to the gas car. Other things to note are the electric car doesn’t really have fluids to change (no oil or transmission) and with regen braking your brake pads and disks last forever. The biggest maintenance expense will be tires which degrade a little faster because of the weight

I've found the level 2 (240 volt) mobile charging cable that comes with the Mach E works fine for my in home use. I don't drive a lot every day, so no need for anything more elaborate. The Ford Pass software works fine for scheduling and monitoring charge levels. I am interested in learning more about connecting my charging unit to a home solar power system. Is it necessary to get a battery to make that work, or just charge during the day?

@MachE_VLOG Unfortunately, the Ford dealer in Escondido completely botched up the sale, so we walked away from the deal. First, they didn't have the car we wanted, so they worked a deal with another dealer. Had us sitting at the dealership for over 8 hours, so called trying to get the car. Nevertheless, we left expecting to pick up the car the following day after 1200 but NLT 2pm. I showed at 1130, and they still hadn't gotten the car. Another 6 hours later now the wife is there to pick me and and they show up with the car. To make matters worse, the dealer gave them a damaged car, and they thought we were not going to do a walk around where we found all the dents and deep scratches in the paint. During the waiting process, they tried so hard to pass the car off by wanting to deliver it to our home. Nonetheless, they would've gone back to the dealer anyway after we had found the damage. Avoid the Escondido Ford location, unprofessional in every matter.

Depends on your car. On extended range Mach-Es, it is better to only charge to 90% on a daily basis. It is OK to occasionally charger to 100% the night before a road trip. On standard range Mach-Es, the same thing applies unless it was built after min-2023. They have a different battery type called LFP. For those, you can charge to 100% anytime you want and you are encouraged to charge to 100% at least once per month.

Electrical wiring is not rocket science. If you're comfortable installing a NEMA 5-15P (standard US socket) to code, you can do your own EV outlet. I did my own with the Hubbell 14-50R outlet and Romex 6/3 as well as a 50A GFCI breaker and it's doing great, cool to the touch, no problems. The Ford charger only pulls 32A if you're using that, we may upgrade to hardwired in the future.
@MachE_VLOG
@MachE_VLOG 19 күн бұрын
Most people aren't, so the best advice is to leave it to a licensed electrician. Many people don't even have the proper tools. I've even seen two outlets that were installed by electricians that shorted and melted.
@JimBronson
@JimBronson 16 күн бұрын
@@MachE_VLOG They will melt if you don't use an industrial rated plug like the Hubbell. The $11 Leviton NEMA 14-50 you get at Home Depot will melt, they are made for stoves, not EVs. For me, seeing that you saw some installed by an actual electrician that melted, further justifies DIY, IMO. At least, if you do hire an electrician, get someone who's done EVs before and knows what's up.
@MachE_VLOG
@MachE_VLOG 16 күн бұрын
@@JimBronson It just illustrates that it is a dangerous thing to assume you know what you are doing. It might work but will it work safely for years and years. Do most people even have the tools or know how? No. They don't. I've done plenty of DIY electrical, but I don't need to mess with something like this. Heck, I just rewired a dozen outlets and a couple of switches in our house yesterday. It reminds me of people that would make DIY network cables. I can make a network cable that is reliable, but most people have far less luck. Those cables "work" but the have a lot of errors that the network can accommodate but actually slows things down. The cables even "test" perfectly on cheap testing equipment but when you use professional test equipment the issues are clear.
@JimBronson
@JimBronson 16 күн бұрын
@@MachE_VLOG Just to clarify, I know what I am doing, I learned from a master electrician, my grandfather. It's not my chosen vocation but I've done tons of work over the years. For the record, I worked network for 25 years in Network and now Cybersecurity, my 568-B cables always tested fine on the Fluke meter. I don't recommend electrical for everyone, but folks can learn it if they put in the time. What gets under my skin is when you pay through the nose for a real electrician and they do substandard work. That's why I almost never hire them unless I don't have the time to do it myself.
@MachE_VLOG
@MachE_VLOG 16 күн бұрын
@@JimBronson That's awesome. Most people don't have that type of connection to a master electrician. I'd rather recommend that people hire someone than to assume that they can do it themselves because there replaced an electrical outlet in their house. Someone that is truly experienced will still go ahead and do it. But we hope to deter people from just "giving it a try." You wouldn't want us to just say, "It's easy! Just try it yourself and see what happens!"

@@skiittz2916 The reason that leasing is popular with many EVs is because they made the tax credits favor leasing. If I buy a 2024 Mach-E, I pay full price. If I lease one, I can get a $7,500 tax credit. It makes more sense to lease the Mach-E and many other EVs because of this.
