In this video, I share with you my technique for machine binding a quilt. I've tried many different techniques for machine binding and this is the method I have been using for several years.
The quilt I am binding in the video is made using 2 yards of the red panel I designed for my Beautiful Day fabric line. These fabrics are in quilt shops that carry Moda fabrics both online and brick & mortar.
Rebecca Silbaugh of Ruby Blue Quilting did the beautiful custom quilting on this quilt. You can find more information about her quilting here: rubybluequilts.blogspot.com/ or on Facebook: / rubybluequilts
Diagonal Seam Tape is designed by Cluck, Cluck, Sew. You can purchase it from her shop here: cluckclucksewshop.com/product... or from your favorite quilt shop.
This is the newer model of my iron: amzn.to/3qEH0dt The one I use doesn't have the retractable cord.
Since the release of this video, Nicole, the creator of the Binding Boards has signed a contract with Riley Blake allowing them to manufacture the boards. They have just started shipping to quilt shops January of 2023. Fat Quarter Shop is an online shop that has them for sale: shrsl.com/3wsfr
I use a Juki TL-2010Q for almost all of my sewing. I also have a Bernina that I use for applique. This is the Juki I use: amzn.to/3us1gAo
I referenced two different sewing machine feet in this video:
Hinged Presser Foot (I used this for sewing the binding strips together as well as top-stitching the binding down in the final step): amzn.to/3uucaFI
1/4" Presser Foot with guide (I used this when sewing the binding to the back of the quilt): amzn.to/3DcfclT
I use these same two feet for all of my piecing. I use the Hinged Presser foot when I am making flying geese, HST's, Flip/Stitch units etc. I use the 1/4" foot for sewing together my blocks & block pieces.
The thread I use almost all of the time is Aurifil 50 weight thread in the color 2021.

For everyone that likes the 'binding board,' this is a very easy (and cheap) way to make your own. All you need to do is place two long pins parallel to each other on your ironing surface an inch or two wider than your iron (stop the video and look at her board). Make sure your pins are heat resistant and that the middle section of the pin is wide enough for your binding to fit under when folded in half. Then you can slide the binding in just as shown in the video and voila, you have a 'binding board." I prefer to use that $40 for fabric instead of buying one more quilting tool. You can see hers is getting burned too from having her iron always in the same place. This way, you can move it from spot to spot and have your ironing board cover last much longer.

When I join my binding diagonally, I move the top strip to the left and up just a bit so I can see the intersections where it overlaps the bottom strip. Then I can guide the bottom intersection along the red line of the diagonal tape.

Love, love, love this video Corey!! I know it’s been awhile since you made this but this is the best tutorial out there. Who would have thought to make it easier for someone to let them know you join the ends like when you make your binding the same way! I am so grateful for your tutorials. You have such a gift of teaching others❤❤❤ I just made my first big quilt with your “Sunwashed” fabrics and made the “Bountiful” quilt on FQS and had it long armed and it’s beautiful!! Cori, thank you for an awesome tutorial! I have not tried a 2 inch binding before but I will defiantly do so soon! I agree with what you mentioned regarding the wiggle room with a 2 1/2 inch binding …so it’s nice to know that the 2 inch binding works better as far as fitting nicely around the edge. I hope you got your other quilts binded. They are beautiful! You mentioned in the description that you use the hinged foot for HST and flying geese etc… I would love to see a tutorial on that too! 😊

Thank you so much for the tutorial! It is very thorough, especially the part about needing to adjust your binding to match the loft of your batting. I generally just use what I have and really have no idea about the different types (something I want to learn more about). I generally make the same width of binding and now I’m seeing the advantages of going a bit narrower. P.S. I think I may have heard your machine asking for a drop or two of oil. 😀

This is how I do my binding as well. I also find that using a stiletto gives me more control and accuracy. Also as mentioned before when joining strips I offset the overlap a little and you can see exactly the diagonal lines to the corners. Thank you for showing us your method of attaching bindings. You make it look so simple! I too have a pile of quilted tops that need bindings, that seems to be the step I procrastinate on.🤦‍♀️ But I will ask….Have you gotten those bindings done? 😉

What an AWESOME tutorial...I've only done 1 binding so far and I'm hand sewing it. But, I know I'll have projects where I'll try the machine binding and I'll definitely save this for reference. I'm loving the Beautiful Day fabric collection. The Mystery BOM is SEW much fun! Thanks for all your videos and the great QAL!

Loved this binding tutorial. Soo helpful. I love how you just take your time and do the corners and they turn out soo perfect. I’m a very new at quilting. And so far I have used flannel in the middle of my projects. But I have started a sweetwater Christmas with red barn fabric. So hopefully by Christmas it will be finished. Lol. Thank you again for the tutorial. I will go back to it time and time again. And I also enjoy your east coast ish accent. 💟
