Good morning, Heather. Just wanted to let you know that THIS VIDEO has become my go-to every time I finish piecing a new quilt to find a quilting design that works well with them. Your collection is unmatched, as far as I can find. I've even learned to adapt your design suggestions to my own style by altering them slightly in some cases. THANK YOU and Merry Christmas!

Brilliant! I've been a long arm quilter for about 10 years and will only custome quilt (and even then rarely), for myself. It took me two year to get confident and proficient enough to offer edge to edge quilting for paying customers, so yes, absolutely, it takes a lot of time and practice to master this skill. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I love the idea of the sample books and am now keen to start my own sample books. Though I doodle, I never really thought about engageing my entire body with the doddle, and yet this makes perfect sense, as when I quilt, it's almost like danceing with the machine. I have learnt so much from this tutorial and you have really inspired me to push myself and extend my free motion skills (I will certainly be watching this tutorial a few times over). I am on my feet giving you a standing ovation.

I wish you were my BFF I always watch this when I am ready to do FMQ. I need to doodle more and take time to just FMQ between projects in the summer when quilting isn't high on my priority list but a time to relax and stay in touch with the FMQ part! Thanks for sharing your beautiful works and expertise!

Just heard her say 'you're going to make a lot of ugly quilts' when starting. I started laughing as I just quilted a section of a table runner i had put up for several years and man oh man ... what I did is UGLY!!! Perfect timing to watch this video.

What a great video thanks for showing all these samples, breaking FMQ down to something achievable. It seems so overwhelming when starting with a big quilt and decide what to do but you make it a lot more doable.

I’ve been searching for books and tutorials for quilting the final piece but it’s mostly all about the blocks with quilting as a secondary consideration. I have bookmarked your tutorial and plan to use it as a frequent reference. As a textile artist, sketch books and collecting motives and patterns are essential in developing work. The overlay with your method of exploring and developing your quilt designs has sparked my interest. If you don’t mind, I’m going to start my own quilt “sketchbook”. No doubt you have to put in the hours!

I am stunned. Really. Books of style samples. Wow! Whopping huge creative artistry. I have been trying to make a few quilts and I completed some very nice blocks and embroidery in some blocks. I've got what I think is a near perfect quilt I plan to give to my first grand-child. But I'm stuck on the last step: the actual quilting. I've stopped and I plan on practicing with scraps (I've got an over-ambitious set of blocks I'm going to cut apart for learning) and your ideas will be part of my next step. You are both brilliant artist, and sensible engineer. At first my heart sank thinking "I can't do that." But, as a beginner, I know I can't do everything you do. (I have a day job.) However, I shall persevere and adopt some ideas I think I can manage. Thank you for the inspiration. Thank you for excellence in a world that often lacks it. While I'm at the comments, good job on the video. Very clean and clear and to the point. I loved it.

Not using contrasting thread against the fabric IS showing clearly the designs. I use the serpentine stitch a lot in my quilting. I had never thought of using the hera marker for marking line orientations and using multiple serpentine stitches for oriental looks. I love your ideas and designs and the encouragement to give more complex quilting another try. Your idea/sample books and advice are wonderful to pay attention to. thanks, albuquerque

@NationalQuiltersCircle

Definitely stick with quilting fabrics. You'll learn more useful tools if you practice on the same type of fabric that you quilt with on a regular basis. Try different battings so that you can see how they behave. I used solids because they showed the quilting best and were less expensive than most prints.
