Jason's been busy prepping for the big FABTECH show on November 11-14, 2019 in Chicago's McCormick Place. He's making all sorts of demo parts and checking that they'll be cutting well.
Tormach Engineer's needed a prototype bracket to test a product, and they needed it quickly. The part they gave him had some extra challenges that he had to fix within Fusion 360, before he could start cutting it. Firstly, Fusion came up with some inefficient tool paths, so Jason had to go in and fix the order of operations. It originally started pocketing out the part, but that was inefficient. Jason prefers coming from the outside of the part, which is better for chip removal. The bracket, cut on aluminum billet, called for a slot, but that would create inefficient toolpaths once the g-code was generated. Since he planned on just slotting it out on a bandsaw afterwards, Jason eliminated the slot. These changes produced a great toolpath that quickly turned around the part.
You may want to follow along to catch some tips Jason uses to get the great results from these brackets.

Whenever opening up the enclosure doors while the machine is running, make sure to always wear the proper eye protection, and protective clothing. Do not get loose clothing or hair near a running spindle.

I noticed NYCCNC is doing less tormach centric stuff so I’m glad you are picking up where they left off! I get a lot of the same vibes from this video and I really like it. One thing I would suggest is to spend more time explaining how/why you are setting the coordinate systems for odd parts like this. I noticed you just swept the indicator up the side of the part so you could see it was perpendicular but someone just starting out may not think of that. (I know you have touching off videos but stuff like that needs repeating and practical examples to really stick) it even goes into the design of the part, you could have made all of the edges rounded to look “sexy” but you chose to leave flats to pick up the edges in later operations and not have to use custom soft jaws. Love the “engrave a guide line for the bandsaw” idea, definitely going to use that!

Realizing after the fact you probably weren’t sweeping that vertical face, just picking up the Y zero, since that bottom face is machined perpendicular. still, you had to have a flat to ensure there was something to probe, which is worth mentioning for the truly green :)

Great question @@strider460 I ran the indicator up the side of the part to find the high spot for setting zero. When you see the indicator start to change direction you are at the high point. Then you can jog over and set your zero. I use the technique quite often so it is easy to just skip over it. I will make sure to explain these better in future videos! Thanks for the comment!

so in op1 you specify you want the toolpath to do the outside first and show how to do so, and then in op2 you face away the remaining stock from the outside in, leaving a lot of unsupported material in the middle of the part. it goes flying at 6:24. wouldn't an inside out op have been safer?

Great question, You are correct taking large pieces off can be risky to both the tool and machine. In hind sight I would bore the hole all the way through the part in Op1. This is the fun part in machining you can always analyse and improve for the next time!

where can I get a tormach in the UK
@daleksw

You can't. You have to buy it from Tormach, then get ACC worldwide in Gravesend to handle getting it across the Atlantic. They've done it for a no. of people and know the drill.
