Machining an Engine to Hydraulic Pump Adapter

This small job came in when the customer exhausted every other option to locate the correct parts and other machine shops said NO or it will cost $$$$ to setup our CNC. We knocked out this perfect adapter in no time and didn't cost the customer a fortune. That is the advantage of Manual Machining. If its one part, a repair, or even a small batch, we can almost always out perform CNC.

It's amazing how many KZfaq "machinists" or, more kindly, hobby machinists don't have a set of counterbore drills.

I am far from a hobby machinist. This has been an operating business for 11 years, servicing all of northern Wisconsin. I prefer not to use counterbores because they are an unnecessary expense. End mills are regularly stocked and used, where as a counterbore would sit unused for months or years at a time.

Josh that's a real clever trick using The Machinist scale as a means of establishing a plane from which to measure the depth of the internal contour of the pulley. I'm going to have to remember that puppy!

Great job mate. I miss that trade now. I live in Thailand now and when I retire I will just buy a small lathe and mill for a hobby but I don't know what to make!

I made pump adapters for replacing the old old Caterpillar Bee Gee Pumps years ago, pretty much retired now, but on one part, I can usually have it done while still programing the CNC guy is still getting set up. The big problem with CNC is the machines must be constantly working or you go broke.

I 100% agree. I could never make it with CNC. I don't do volume and don't want to. Years ago I did a part race with a CNC shop to prove I was faster on one part. 3 hours for me to run it, 14 hours and the CNC was almost done. He had 7 hours of programming before he loaded material.

@@TopperMachineLLC Topper, I sort of never seen anyone make it with old Paid For CNC machines, otherwise you pay every month for a magic box that is designed least last 5yrs so you can pay for it. Oh well, oily unbankable us actually will do better in the up coming bad economy.

Fantastic job. This looks like a great project and something we could learn a lot from if we attempted it. I like those transfer screws, not seen them before. We are finally planning to do a video showing our exisiting and new machine tools which will be live tomorrow (Saturday), I would value your views on the equipment we have. Thanks

What color green are your lathes? John Deere Green?

They are Key Lime. It's rust-oleum paint. I really like it,except I need to paint the others and have no free time.
