I have to machine UHMW in my cnc lathe from time to time. The way I do it has developed through trial and error. I achieve good finishes using HSS ground with about a .03" nose, top grind with a positive rake and machine everything to within .100" and let it sit till the next day and then finish to size. The UHMW will expand significantly when you remove a lot of material. I machine 1000 rpm .02" ipr rough then .01"ipr finish. Slight microgroove looks good to me on the UHMW.
