when mothers discount daughters' memories of their painful childhood. This is called "gaslighting", as in the movie. I'm sure the daughter's book is accurate, especially since she published this while her mother is still alive. I salute you, Brooke, for your courage.

Shirley MacLaine is the same kind of mother as she was a wife. She and her husband had a completely "open" marriage, seeing each other briefly only two or three times a year. Shirley saw her daughter only briefly a few times per year. Shirley treated her with the same love and admiration one would give to a card table, which would be taken out a few times each year to play a game of cards, with friends, then shoved back into the storage closet after use. Shirley MacLaine fits into that category of people who should never become parents. People who are obsessed with themselves, their own needs, their own careers and their own interests, and who use and discard other humans at will. The number one responsibility of any decent, loving parent is to be selfless, and to be devoted to their children as their number one priority. Not constantly doting on them, but always being there to nurture, guide, help, teach, advise and love them. You don't plant a flower in the ground and then walk away, starving it of sunlight and water while expecting it to grow and become beautiful.

Shirley's statement sounds like a self-righteous parent who refuses to acknowledge the pain she has inflicted on her child or take responsibility for her actions. It's all about her, not about her daughter's experiences. Some people can't handle the truth.

Hard to imagine Shirley being ‘heartbroken’ over her abandonment of her daughter. What she cannot or will not fathom is how horribly emotionally painful it was for Sachi. Step up to the truth Shirley. Despite your talents, you’ve been an abusive parent, and you should own that. To be abandoned is a searing primal emotional pain, and it doesn’t go away. Too sad.

@Arlene: well said. Although I'm a huge Shirley MacLaine fan: a fan of her spiritual, metaphysical work, a fan of her as an actress, I was very intrigued by this when it came out several years ago. I think it's possible that in the grand scheme of things there was probably some karma here between these two meaning that perhaps Sachi as a soul in another lifetime abandoned Shirley... truly nothing happens by accident but that said I do feel for Sachi as that must have been incredibly painful. It makes me wonder as I have never really wondered before if maybe Shirley MacLaine is a covert narcissist. Covert narcissism is just so much harder to detect than malignant narcissism. They'll give you the shirt off their back, they're generally very sweet and nice and friendly to the outside world but they show a very different side to people in their personal life. And the fact that she said she was heartbroken....well, I doubt she was, as you said, and it's interesting that she's making this about herself instead of about Sachi who is really just you know in a very extreme way reaching out to her mother. This was many years ago, I certainly hope they've made amends by now or mended the bridge so to speak. I'm sure Shirley won't be with us much longer.

Aside from that, kids are on their own at 18 when the parents lack resources to set their children up for success, via running or starting a business, attending college or trade school, or other avenues to set their children on a path to success. If Shirley was unwilling to provide these opportunities, she should have helped her daughter break into films.

Susan Weston: Shirley MacLaine is a sociopath. Her daughter had the exact same upbringing as a child growing up in foster homes and orphanages. Institutionalized, left with unfit people, and then thrown out in the street after graduation from high school. $50,000,000 and she wouldn't even pay for trade school for her daughter, let alone college, and wouldn't even leave 1% of that as a safety net for her only child and grandchildren. No money for charity either; she doesn't think of what at least some of that money could do for a child somewhere living friendless with a disfigured face or facing lifelong blindness if s/he doesn't get an operation within a couple of years. Everything MacLaine has will go to flying saucer freaks in New Mexico. MacLaine also slept with other women's husbands and encouraged her daughter to have sex as a teenager on the rare occasion she was allowed to be in her mother's house. Miserable old bag now living as a hermit in a desert self-contained luxury cave, almost never venturing out because the people there don't like her and she doesn't like them because other women are more attractive than she is now that she's old.

For her to write this book is fair. It is fair to lay it out for her mother to read in broad daylight. I dont believe for one moment that a parent who neglects their child to that degree would 'listen to reason' over a dinner, or even take a heartfelt letter seriously. The only thing, I think, that would really get through to a parent who is in the public eye because of hard-won fame, is telling a public story. Yes, Shirley Maclaine, since you didn't listen to your daughter during her whole life, you can now hear her story over a loudspeaker, and it may be an embarresment.

The allegations seem to be true based upon Shirley's other interviews; her beliefs and her desires. What I find difficult to believe is that she's writing the book to get closer to her mother, maybe for her own daughers but it's just common sense that writing a negative book on someone will make them angry whether the book is true or not. BD Hyman, the daughter of Bette Davis also said years ago that she wrote about Bette to get closer to her and now that she has her own religious you tube channel and now admits on one of her videos that she wrote the book so that her mother would stay away from her for good. She believes for sure that her mother Bette Davis was a genuine witch.

It's as if she (the interviewer) thinks that she is conducting a "hard-hitting" interview with a corrupt politician or business mogul, in which case blindsiding the person would be fair game. Being that cold or heartless doesn't work in this type of interview, she could use some tips from Barbara Walters or Oprah on conducting interviews and showing compassion for someone who just wrote a memoir about their abusive childhood. We all make mistakes. Mothers especially. The problem lies in the fact that children who have been hurt by their parents, who acted out of selfishness and problematic issues, never get an apology from their parents. We makes mistakes, but it is a parent's duty to own up to those mistakes and reach out to a hurt child. The coldness, refusal to face up to that egoism, and mistakes is perhaps the most painful issue here. Shirley probably could not have been the amazing actress and artist she was if she had not been a narcissist. The problem is she hurt her daughter and refuses to admit it. That is so selfish and cruel. It is time she owned up to her mistakes and tried to heal the hurt she created.

texan903, I appreciate your comment to me. Your story really affected me, because I know exactly how you feel. It took me a long time to come to the realization that my mother was “toxic” to me. We did not have a relationship of any kind for the last ten years of her life. She did not even contact me when I had cancer in 1998, and had to have a kidney removed because of it. I have never felt guilty for cutting off ties with her, because I knew in my heart that I had tried everything that I could do to make our relationship a better one. My father was an alcoholic, also, but clearly the better parent. He was not a “mean drunk”. Most of all, I knew that my father loved me, which is all a child really wants. Unlike your situation, I am sure that my mother remembered everything - she just would not admit to it. Both of my siblings talked to her about the way she treated me. When I got the courage to ask my mother why she treated me like she did, her response was “my mother treated me like that, and I turned out just fine”. My husband always told me that at least I was able to stop the cycle of abuse. The incidents you described in your comment are truly horrific. Unfortunately, they will probably stay with you for a lifetime. Just know that the way you were treated is not your fault. I am so very sorry that you have to go through this. @@Kayte-tv2cw How selfish and cruel for a parent not to be present or at least make contact during a grave illness of their child. Sadly, appallingly, your mother showed her unwillingness to accept responsibility when she tried blaming her mother. When you know that you have tried everything, anything beyond that is a mental draining, also not healthy. Self-preservation is important. Fortunately you have your husband and father and son. Most of the worst incidents happened about 25 years ago, like the car situation. When I think back, it's baffling, almost tear-jerking, so I forget as much as possible. The less contact I find is better. For five years when I lived in Europe, he would never call or make contact, it was strange but he is also narcissistic to the point that he felt that providing a roof, food, utilities, good education, everyone should be happy, that was supposed to be all it took. My dad's mother has stage four kidney cancer and has since a recurrence in 2017. The bad kidney was removed about 15 years before that. Treatment is keeping it at bay for the time being, thankfully. Should she stay free of the COVID-19, she will be 77 in two months time. Having read Ms. Parker's book, I was horrified at the behavior of Shirley MacLaine. You and Ms. Parker clearly share an amazing willpower. Time is precious, valuable and I believe we must love ourselves first, most importantly and then we better learn how to love others. We just have to make the most of the one life we're guaranteed to have.

texan903, Everything you said is so true, and full of many years of wisdom. Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 1989, due to his alcoholism, and that is when my mother really escalated her negative treatment of me as an adult. I think it was because my dad was no longer there to “protect” me. I worry that you hold the abuse you suffered inside and try to forget it, because it truly can be toxic to your life. Counseling can be beneficial for a lot of people, although it did not help me that much. I think that the pain is just too deep when you are a child who is hurt by someone who should love and protect you. However, counseling did give me the strength to break away from the negative relationship with my mother. I understand how that would be difficult for you to do right now because you don’t want to hurt your dad’s parents. I am so very sorry to hear about your grandmother’s cancer ordeal. I pray that medication will continue to help her. As for you, please take care of yourself, stay strong, and know that you are in my thoughts.

While I do question Parker's motives for writing this book, I don't doubt much of her story. What kind of person leaves their only child, age two, to live w/her father she's still married to, & his mistress in another country? The whole situation right there is unkosher! It may be possible that there was some personal reactionary reason for this book. Though, while, I do like Shirley Maclaine as an actress, she has always struck me as an egotistical diva that you don't cross.

I might add, that even though she claimed to have a special bond with her dog Terry (who she believes communicated with her via ESP while the dog was both alive and dead) but she allowed that poor dog to suffer for years instead of putting her out of her misery when she was blind, deaf, completely incontinent, and couldn’t even stand without wobbling. Terry the dog eventually threw herself into the family pool to end her own life! That is not love. It is the epitome of selfishness! If you want to hear it from Shirley Maclean’s one words, read about this poor little dog in “Out on a Leash”, her book about Terry (and UFOs and ancient civilizations where she first met Terry who was a god, among other craziness). MacLaine needs to grow some empathy and focus outward, her time is running out.... sad.

Shirley Maclaine is a great personality and actress, but I always suspected something else about her, something I read between the lines of her books and statements about herself, even way before Sachi spilled the beans. She's a consummate narcissist. Narcissists don't stop to consider whether their choices are going to hurt someone else. Those considerations are not a part of their consciousness. They operate solely out of their own needs, and consider that to be its own justification. My mother was a clone of Shirley. She never once stopped to think about anything other than what would satisfy her own needs and agendas. It's a form of illness. The best thing Sachi can do is get into therapy, see her mother's limitations and failings, let go of it, find other sources of love and validation, and move totally on. That way, she wins. She's not a victim. Since I believe in karma, her mother will have to one day pay the price. That's how it works. You go, Sachi.

DivineSimply Personally, I think you've nailed the issues between Shirley Maclaine and her daughter. Many or most of the commenters here are critical of Sachi because she's stepping on their fantasies of Shirley's character and personality by telling "her truth" as she put it in one interview. But each person has a personal "truth" that may bear very little resemblance to other people's perceptions. Most of Sachi's detractors seem to characterize her as "a spoiled rich kid" who wants to get revenge on her mother for not being the mommy of her dreams, and incidentally, to make lots of money in the process. But hurt is hurt, loneliness is loneliness, and it really does seem that Sachi's mom sacrificed her relationship with her child in favor of her own career. She sent large amounts of money to Sachi's father as a way to avoid having to deal with a reality she wanted no part of. Somehow I doubt the results of her book are going to be satisfying to Sachi, though. You're right: she may have a real chance to free herself of the past and find peace of mind through therapy.

Most people who have had difficult relationships would like for things to be better, to have a happy ending, and that is not limited to Hollywood families. It's common for a child to want a relationship with their parents, even if they were abused and neglected. I wanted that too until I realized that it would never happen since my mother is incapable of giving love and is very self-absorbed. People like that will NEVER admit that they've done wrong and will deny it until their last breath. Sachi needs to stay away from Shirley, as the woman is a narcissist and will never apologize or change.

I can't understand how people take sides here. None of us who comment know these two women. They have obviously shared a lot of good and bad in many years. Isn't this normal? How many out there who are parents/daughters/sons can claim to have had a happy/unchallenged/safe/and harmonious upbringing? Even in the best families stuff happens. People who grew up in the 50, 60, 70s often had parents who were sort of traumatised by war events, discipline often meant physical punishment, many of us did not grow up rich... So, come on, they have issues. Yes, maybe she should have tried to sort it out with her mother before she wrote a book, maybe that wasn't possible, maybe her mother could've made amends but didn't. Who knows! Just stop judging people with your small mindedness.

Let go of any and all expectations about your parents - what they did or didn't do, etc. - they are human. Took me 52 years to figure out I was part of the problem because I expected my parents to be some version of what I considered "good parents" - and they did the best they could. I'm sorry for the pain involved for both mother, daughter, and grandkids. This type of thing is very common in human nature if you study family systems. May you all find some measure of inner peace - even if reconciliation does not happen.

There are people who hate their innocent children because they hate the other parent or for some other stupid reason. I remember reading a woman's account of her father abusing her constantly because her mother died having her. Mercifully, he died when the child was elementary school age (murdered actually, by someone outraged over the sex abuse of the daughter) but she had been left an angry bitter man-hating woman who abused her own son. He later killed himself in his 30s. An evil person can wreck so many lives.

I watched a bio of Shirley MacLaine and she admitted she wasn't the best mother in the world but if her career was really impeded by a child she would have aborted it. She didn't. She did what she considered best at that time, in that era. As for her kookiness, well, you take what you need and leave the rest. Sometimes, while you journal, what you write years ago is usually tempered by age. I can only relate as what I felt towards my father growing up, and the first time I saw him strike my mother, all love for him was sealed off. My sisters. Received all the attention. I asked about Big Brother club in eighth grade because no hunting, fishing, etc ever done together. So I went hunting with him one time. So my journals whined about being clothed and fed but little else. When I joined the Air Force he did stop by to say how proud he was, etc. My perception was he put me on Earth and then, grow on your own. When I turned 30 and had a youngun of my owwn, I remember wondering how my father clothed and fed 5 kids and it was tight with one One Christmas he was Ansy that I open up one present, which I did

Shirley MacLaine was born without the maternal gene. That's not her fault. What was her fault was dumping her two year child on her playboy husband who lived halfway around the world. She could have kept Sachi with her and hired a nanny like just about everyone else in Hollyweird. When Sachi graduated from boarding school at age 17, instead of cutting Sachi off financially, she could have at least loaned her the money for college. It's crystal clear that she never wanted her daughter in her life, considered her to be a financial burden and cut her off financially when she was still a minor.

It's definitely a pattern when it comes to old hollywood stars & their children. Many of them seemed to have difficult childhoods even with all the wealth their parents had. Maclaine isn't the first on this list. There was Loretta Young refusing to publicly acknowledge her daughter with Clark Gable as her biological child even to her dying day. Gable was worse, at least Loretta raised their child while he behaved like she was nonexistent even with the glaring resemblance. Ingrid Bergman left daughter & husband for her lover, ZsaZsa Gabor & Hilton did not do right by their only daughter who died a wretch, of course many of us know the story of Joan Crawford & Bette Davis' relationships with their daughters. I think it's unfortunately the way hollywood was (& is) set up. A lot of hurt wounded people from dysfunctional homes find fame & fortune, become parents without any idea of how to love their children. Maybe some years from now, they will be tell-alls for some current hollywood stars.

only they know the truth-but I caught the daughter saying in interview- i never meant to hurt her- i just wanted her to know how i felt- ok then- why not tell her over dinner-on a one on one conversation or send her a letter-why publicly humiliate someone you supposeably care about

Sachi didn't do it privately because she needed the money, obviously. She earned somewhere in the neighborhood ten-to-twenty million dollars for "Lucky Me." And she'll get even more $$$ for selling the the movie rights. Sounds like a pretty boring book, though. Hope it was worth it to her to sell out like that. It's sad no matter how you look at it.

exactly. I have a similar mother, but not rich and famous. her way to avoid anything "negative" I had to say, was to run away. literally, she moved uncountable times in her lifetime, and in the end, now, she's senile and dependent on my sister and me. it's hard sometimes, but we take care of her, I have to admit, sometimes I do tell her how horrible she was at times, and how hurtful. she listens now, because she can't run any more, but she obviously has no idea what I'm talking about. she just looks at me and shakes her head, as if to say - wow, I did that? lol
