@Arlene: well said. Although I'm a huge Shirley MacLaine fan: a fan of her spiritual, metaphysical work, a fan of her as an actress, I was very intrigued by this when it came out several years ago. I think it's possible that in the grand scheme of things there was probably some karma here between these two meaning that perhaps Sachi as a soul in another lifetime abandoned Shirley... truly nothing happens by accident but that said I do feel for Sachi as that must have been incredibly painful. It makes me wonder as I have never really wondered before if maybe Shirley MacLaine is a covert narcissist. Covert narcissism is just so much harder to detect than malignant narcissism. They'll give you the shirt off their back, they're generally very sweet and nice and friendly to the outside world but they show a very different side to people in their personal life. And the fact that she said she was heartbroken....well, I doubt she was, as you said, and it's interesting that she's making this about herself instead of about Sachi who is really just you know in a very extreme way reaching out to her mother. This was many years ago, I certainly hope they've made amends by now or mended the bridge so to speak. I'm sure Shirley won't be with us much longer.

@@davidyatesmckay Did you not read the sentence above yours? If it's true that Sachi had an opportunity but the mother put a stop to it, it makes the mother a ruthless, cold-hearted bitch. Aside from that, kids are on their own at 18 when the parents lack resources to set their children up for success, via running or starting a business, attending college or trade school, or other avenues to set their children on a path to success. If Shirley was unwilling to provide these opportunities, she should have helped her daughter break into films.

Institutionalized, left with unfit people, and then thrown out in the street after graduation from high school. $50,000,000 and she wouldn't even pay for trade school for her daughter, let alone college, and wouldn't even leave 1% of that as a safety net for her only child and grandchildren. No money for charity either; she doesn't think of what at least some of that money could do for a child somewhere living friendless with a disfigured face or facing lifelong blindness if s/he doesn't get an operation within a couple of years. If her daughter was important to her she would have spoken about her during all of her interviews over the years, In the books I've read of Shirley MacLaine I have not heard about her daughter I surely don't remember her mentioning her daughter.

Totally agree about Parker publishing the volume during her mother's lifetime. While I do believe some stories were exaggerated, I believe the content of the anecdotes. Some friends and family members gave interviews publicly at the time to corroborate Parker.

The allegations seem to be true based upon Shirley's other interviews; her beliefs and her desires. What I find difficult to believe is that she's writing the book to get closer to her mother, maybe for her own daughers but it's just common sense that writing a negative book on someone will make them angry whether the book is true or not. BD Hyman, the daughter of Bette Davis also said years ago that she wrote about Bette to get closer to her and now that she has her own religious you tube channel and now admits on one of her videos that she wrote the book so that her mother would stay away from her for good. She believes for sure that her mother Bette Davis was a genuine witch.

I resisted even watching her films for years but the lady has so much talent. The older ones have often been horrible to their children and spouses. Promiscuity, philandering, and disrespect for women are also rampant. Also, a lot of bad interactions with the police.

And that wouldn’t be bad per se if she hadn’t had a daughter and hadn’t neglected her.

Shirley is now 80 years old. She probably will spend her last years alone. This is something to consider when making life choices.

I had a mother very much like this. She was a homemaker. Her cruelty to me both as a child and an adult affected me to such a degree that I went to years and years of counseling. I begged my mother to go to therapy with me - but in her eyes, she had been “a perfect parent”. At a counselor’s advice, I finally ended the toxic relationship with my mother, which I never regretted. Thank God I have a wonderful husband who always helped me so much with my severe lack of self esteem. I also have a wonderful son of whom I am so proud. My horrible upbringing gave me the skills to be a loving and supportive parent. I am now 67 years old and my entire life with my mother still haunts me.

Having had a dad who was narcissistic, self-centered, abusive and alcoholic, the pressure weighed both physically and mentally for years. When I confronted him about incidents such as drunkenly trying to shove me out of a moving car, pointing a loaded gun in my direction as I was mowing the lawn, he denied that said accidents ever occurred. I used to think he was in denial but now understand that as he was hammered 90% of the time, he probably doesn't remember. We have occasional communication for the benefit of my siblings and grandparents but the pain is so raw and deep, I will eventually cut off contact if I survive both grandparents.

texan903, I appreciate your comment to me. Your story really affected me, because I know exactly how you feel. It took me a long time to come to the realization that my mother was “toxic” to me. We did not have a relationship of any kind for the last ten years of her life. She did not even contact me when I had cancer in 1998, and had to have a kidney removed because of it. I have never felt guilty for cutting off ties with her, because I knew in my heart that I had tried everything that I could do to make our relationship a better one. My father was an alcoholic, also, but clearly the better parent. He was not a “mean drunk”. Most of all, I knew that my father loved me, which is all a child really wants. Unlike your situation, I am sure that my mother remembered everything - she just would not admit to it. Both of my siblings talked to her about the way she treated me. When I got the courage to ask my mother why she treated me like she did, her response was “my mother treated me like that, and I turned out just fine”. My husband always told me that at least I was able to stop the cycle of abuse. The incidents you described in your comment are truly horrific. Unfortunately, they will probably stay with you for a lifetime. Just know that the way you were treated is not your fault. I am so very sorry that you have to go through this. My heart goes out to you. Please take care of yourself!

Sadly, appallingly, your mother showed her unwillingness to accept responsibility when she tried blaming her mother. When you know that you have tried everything, anything beyond that is a mental draining, also not healthy. Self-preservation is important. Fortunately you have your husband and father and son. Most of the worst incidents happened about 25 years ago, like the car situation. When I think back, it's baffling, almost tear-jerking, so I forget as much as possible. The less contact I find is better. For five years when I lived in Europe, he would never call or make contact, it was strange but he is also narcissistic to the point that he felt that providing a roof, food, utilities, good education, everyone should be happy, that was supposed to be all it took. My dad's mother has stage four kidney cancer and has since a recurrence in 2017. The bad kidney was removed about 15 years before that. Treatment is keeping it at bay for the time being, thankfully. Should she stay free of the COVID-19, she will be 77 in two months time. Having read Ms. Parker's book, I was horrified at the behavior of Shirley MacLaine. You and Ms. Parker clearly share an amazing willpower. Time is precious, valuable and I believe we must love ourselves first, most importantly and then we better learn how to love others. We just have to make the most of the one life we're guaranteed to have.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 1989, due to his alcoholism, and that is when my mother really escalated her negative treatment of me as an adult. I think it was because my dad was no longer there to “protect” me. I worry that you hold the abuse you suffered inside and try to forget it, because it truly can be toxic to your life. Counseling can be beneficial for a lot of people, although it did not help me that much. I think that the pain is just too deep when you are a child who is hurt by someone who should love and protect you. However, counseling did give me the strength to break away from the negative relationship with my mother. I understand how that would be difficult for you to do right now because you don’t want to hurt your dad’s parents. I am so very sorry to hear about your grandmother’s cancer ordeal. I pray that medication will continue to help her. As for you, please take care of yourself, stay strong, and know that you are in my thoughts.

DivineSimply Personally, I think you've nailed the issues between Shirley Maclaine and her daughter. Many or most of the commenters here are critical of Sachi because she's stepping on their fantasies of Shirley's character and personality by telling "her truth" as she put it in one interview. But each person has a personal "truth" that may bear very little resemblance to other people's perceptions. Most of Sachi's detractors seem to characterize her as "a spoiled rich kid" who wants to get revenge on her mother for not being the mommy of her dreams, and incidentally, to make lots of money in the process. But hurt is hurt, loneliness is loneliness, and it really does seem that Sachi's mom sacrificed her relationship with her child in favor of her own career. She sent large amounts of money to Sachi's father as a way to avoid having to deal with a reality she wanted no part of. Somehow I doubt the results of her book are going to be satisfying to Sachi, though. You're right: she may have a real chance to free herself of the past and find peace of mind through therapy.

Most actresses are narcissists in some form - as there are different types of narcs. No mother puts her 2 year old on an airplane by themselves to Japan. I never even knew she had a daughter.

I was given away for adoption and only recognized after both my adoptive parents had died and l was desperately ill. Immediately my biological parents both made excuses for decisions they had made which forever impacted me, and used revisionist history when it suited their individual yet similar stories. Fate had me born to the wrong parents but raised by the mother l was meant to have, which has helped me heal from the truth of my beginnings, accept the narcissists l was mistakenly born to, and be eternally grateful for the wisdom and insight l gained by the decent upbringing l had. The narcissist will never apologize, as blame only exists in their vocabulary when it applies as a term for others to shoulder.

There are people who hate their innocent children because they hate the other parent or for some other stupid reason. I remember reading a woman's account of her father abusing her constantly because her mother died having her. Mercifully, he died when the child was elementary school age (murdered actually, by someone outraged over the sex abuse of the daughter) but she had been left an angry bitter man-hating woman who abused her own son. He later killed himself in his 30s. An evil person can wreck so many lives.

I watched a bio of Shirley MacLaine and she admitted she wasn't the best mother in the world but if her career was really impeded by a child she would have aborted it. She didn't. She did what she considered best at that time, in that era. As for her kookiness, well, you take what you need and leave the rest. Sometimes, while you journal, what you write years ago is usually tempered by age. I can only relate as what I felt towards my father growing up, and the first time I saw him strike my mother, all love for him was sealed off. My sisters. Received all the attention. I asked about Big Brother club in eighth grade because no hunting, fishing, etc ever done together. So I went hunting with him one time. So my journals whined about being clothed and fed but little else. When I joined the Air Force he did stop by to say how proud he was, etc. My perception was he put me on Earth and then, grow on your own. When I turned 30 and had a youngun of my owwn, I remember wondering how my father clothed and fed 5 kids and it was tight with one One Christmas he was Ansy that I open up one present, which I did

I have a similar mother, but not rich and famous. her way to avoid anything "negative" I had to say, was to run away. literally, she moved uncountable times in her lifetime, and in the end, now, she's senile and dependent on my sister and me. it's hard sometimes, but we take care of her, I have to admit, sometimes I do tell her how horrible she was at times, and how hurtful. she listens now, because she can't run any more, but she obviously has no idea what I'm talking about. she just looks at me and shakes her head, as if to say - wow, I did that? lol
