#ilovervlife #thebighouse #hayhouse As RV travelers, Joan and I really enjoy sharing the places we visit and tour. We have traveled thousands of miles with many more thousands planned. But, with our tours and stops from these travels, we realized something was missing! Our hometown of Macon GA. This is a great place to visit with so much to offer for a couple of days of touring as you move north and south on I-75. Many just stop for the evening as they go back and forth to Florida, but you're missing a great opportunity to see the remnants of a civilization that lived here over a thousand years ago, beautiful restored homes from the late 1800's to early 1900's, great camping on the lake, the Allman Brothers Big House. restaurants and so much more.
In this video, we start with a highlight of Lake Tobosofkee Recreation Area. This is minutes off I-475 and offers very reasonably priced camping on a beautiful lake setting. See the entire tour of the campground and recreation are here • Lake Tobesofkee Campgr...
After a long drive and needing a good meal to relax, we take you to our favorite casual dinning restaurant just minutes from the campground at the Zebulon Rd exit. There's also shopping at many of the popular big box stores along with the areas lower cost gas and diesel.
Plan to stay a night or two and tour Macon. We take you on a walking tour of the Ocumulgee National Monument. A step back in time to 1,000 years ago when the South Appalachian Mississippian people lived hear. We provide a highlight of this rare and amazing location. See the entire tour here. • Ocmulgee National Monu...
Then it's off to downtown Macon. We take a short walking tour. There is so much to see from old homes and museums that it was impossible to fit all into one day. We stopped in a couple of our favorites starting with the amazing and impeccably restored Hay House built in 1855 offering a stunning tour and a glimpse into the life of the three families from the late 1800's to 1960. We also show a very small fraction of the old homes in the downtown area. A walking tour around Mulberry St, Bond St, College St, and Orange St, to name just a few can last minutes to hours. We break for lunch at one of our favorite brew pubs, Piedmont Brewery.
Next, we are off to The Big House. This was the home of the Allman Brothers Band during the early 1970's. The home has been restored and contains an incredible amount of band memorabilia including Layla, Duane Allman's gold top Gibson guitar, Gregg Allman's Hammond B3 organ, and Dickey Bett's custom guitar, with thousands of photos, artwork, and band items to keep your interest for hours. We finish the day on a solemn note with a trip to the historic Rose Hill Cemetery. This cemetery was established in 1840. It is also the final resting place of Duane Allman, Gregg Allman and Berry Oakley. There's also the interesting grave site of Elizabeth Reed, the inspiration of the iconic Dickey Betts' song from the Idlewild South Album.
We hope you enjoy the tour and make plans to stop and experience Macon, GA, my hometown.

We are making a small "great water fall" 2k+ mile , 21 day loop from Mobile to Gatlinburg (Smokey Mtn Nat Park) , Asheville NC, Augusta Ga, Macon Ga, Bainbridge GA/Chattahoochee FL and home to Mobile. Macon has been our greatest surprize and our favorite city of the loop. 10 visits to Asheville would not equal one visit to Macon. Kimberly at the "Visit Macon--Information Center" on MLK Blvd was awesome. Her advice , coupled with your video, made Macon our most enjoyable city visit by far. Macon is a hidden gem indeed!!

You must mention Amerson River Park, Macon's other Best Kept Secret! Such a beautiful, relaxing place to exercise, take a stroll, or enjoy the many beautiful views. The Rookery is Downtown Macon's most popular restaurant. You'll find a good number of quality places to eat downtown.

I was born and raised in Macon, Georgia and I didn’t live too far from Mercer University. Yes I must see the Hayes House. I remember J.J. Newberry. I used to go to the city auditorium for famous singers would come. Omg, I bought my son here to visit but it was so rainy at the Ocmulgee reservation. I am proud to be part Native American Cherokee and Seminole. Oh thank you for links as I have family still in Macon and Atlanta. That grave stone and it says wife of Napier; I wonder if the Napier Avenue was named after him? I attended the Old A.L. Miller high school and my brother attended Lanier and after his graduation he went on to a college with military schooling. He later joined the Marines and he did very well and he later worked civilian NDT.

Thanks Norm. Macon is a bit unique. I wish time would have allowed me to cover more music history. So many many have came from here - Little Richard, Otis Redding, Randy Crawford, Allman Brothers, Ronnie Hammond (Atlanta Rhythm Section lead singer), Chuck Leavell (Stone's keyboards), Bill Berry (R.E.M.), Jason Alldean and a bunch more. I think there's something in the water:).

Nice job Jerry. I have spent many a nights in Macon during my working years, mostly during the mid '80s. I have been by the Big House and eaten at a restaurant the guys use to go too but I don't remember the name. One day several of us did a motorcycle ride to Macon and did an Allman Brothers tour also visiting the cemetery. At that time, they didn't have the fence around the graves. You really made it a place I would like to go back too.

What? No Nuway hot dog? West Macon native here. I watched them build Lake Tobesofkee, land clearing and the dam construction. I played music all around Macon and middle Georgia in the late 50s and early 60s. Rubbed shoulders with Otis in the early days (under same agent) and played in Macon’s first recording studio (Mulberry Street) - all before the Allman Brothers came. Phil Walden was there, but pre-Capricorn and only a small time agent booking bands primarily for college and high school dances.

When looking check out North Macon. Very nice, but a bit on the pricey side. Also nice is the lower part of the county west of I475 from Eisenhower Pkwy past Harley Bridge Rd. The area is often referred to as Lower Bibb County or LBC. Nice area. A little rural. Good folks out there. Stay away from East Macon, Bloomfield and the Napier Ave area. As with any city there's good and bad. Lake Tobo is a nice spot. Safe travels.
