It's amazing how well this has aged - despite being almost 40 years old, it's still a gorgeous anime by today's standards. Proof that there's a certain texture or expression that CGI still has trouble replicating.
@k1productions875 жыл бұрын
It aged a lot better than the TV series it was based on, because they had the budget and animation staff to pull it off. When you start nickel and diming a project, the quality suffers. Its why many resort to CGI, because its cheaper. Meanwhile, CGI done right, with a proper budget and animation team can still turn out beautiful work as well.

There is nothing like hand painted and drawn images, no computer can emulate that. Awesome and state of the art animation
@ShimodaNexus9 ай бұрын
The sad thing is, I'm sure it's possible to get close, we just seldom ever see it. Even with how time-saving CGI work can be compared to so many frames of hand drawn animation, anime is largely made the same as it was back then, so staff don't usually get to pull off stuff like this. Combine that with OVA-style productions being a thing of the past, and here we are. There are exceptions, I think the Netflix Castlevania stuff looks fantastic, but that's the exception, not the rule. And for mecha, outside of Gundam, it's sadly barren these days of something with the same...oomph as original Macross.
@nilok77 ай бұрын
I need to try and find it, but as I understand it, Macross DYRL did use CGI, but not in the final shots. Some of the more complex movements had a CGI previz that the animators used as guides to keep on model and in the right perspective. Akira uses a lot of CGI you never get to see. The intro motorcycle scene was all made in CGI to keep the mechanical shapes on model and then drawn over. The classic Akira Slide was originally CGI before being drawn over. The key thing is it isn't CGI that's bad, but how it's utilized.

It's like this - You may have seen fighter combat and awesome aerial and space dog-fighting portrayed in anime and live action over the years. But this, my friends, is *_the mecha equivalent of a knife fight in a phone booth!!_* And I've *_never_* seen anything quite like it before or since.

Shōji Kawamori, one of the Macross creators, refers to Maximilian Jenius and Milia Fallyna Jenius as being the best valkyrie (also known as variable fighters) pilots ever in the Macross universe since according to him Max and Milia are "genius".
Its a shame the last part of this scene was removed. True, it doesn't directly involve Max and Milia, but seeing the Meltrandi battleship fire its weapon and destroy Macross' main canon with the epic finale of the BGM theme just makes the stakes seem so much higher.

Huh... just noticed that at 0:33 Max takes several direct hits from Millia. If he hadn't transformed into Battroid mode at that exact moment he'd probably had been defeated (since Battroid mode redirects energy that is normally used for engines to the energy conversion armor instead. I'm a total Macross nerd...) Awesomeness. It's really quite impossible to notice all the amazing details without watching it in slow-mo.

This is a movie made from the original Macross TV show (Season 1 of Robotech was a bastardization of Macross). In the Macross Continuity, DYRL is an In Universe movie made after the 'Real Life' accounts of the events of the TV show (which is canon), hence certain dramatic differences (such as the manner of Roy Fokkers death)
@ShimodaNexus15 жыл бұрын
My favorite dogfight from the Macross continuity. Shame it was so short. I don't think I've come across a game of any sort that allows you to pilot like that. Even Valkryie simulations aren't up to this level.

ps2 Macross. Its a two part stage, first part is beating Miria, 2nd part is destroying her command ship. The absolute hardest stage in the game.

@Skullsquadron1000 - "max was turned..." Zentran&Meltran use power suits only slightly larger than they are, humans use mecha to match their size. And yes, Max was taken by the Zentran ladies *after* this scene and later in the movie returns giant sized after using one of their enlargement machines piloting a Blue Meltran Queadlunn-Rau Power Armor since his own Valk was destroyed.. All I can think is.. Max... You are wearing Meltran female underware aren't you? They don't have any male clothes.
